“To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” Thomas Edison (Aquarian)

The Moon ventures into innovative Aquarius (1:08 am EDT), shortly thereafter aligning with rebel Uranus in Aries.  We’re more inclined to want to break some rules today and stretch beyond our current limits.  Towing the status quo is of far less status and consequence to us now.  We want to change things up and make some waves.

Speaking of waves, it was thirty years ago today, June 1, 1980, that Ted Turner’s CNN (Cable News Network) hit the airwaves.

At the time of the debut, the Sun (the core of the enterprise) was in the newsaholic sign of Gemini (Gemini rules news reporting and information-gathering) and in an exact square to pioneering Mars in perceptive Virgo. Sun-Mars days typically usher in new beginnings. The Sun-Mars energy also gives a sense of urgency and adventure, along with a desire to want to go and be where the action (Mars) is. Mars rules the aggressive urge.

Gemini’s planetary ruler, Mercury, which governs speech and communication, was also exactly sextile to long-winded Jupiter, the planet of opportunity and expansion.  With Mercury-Jupiter, there would never be a loss for words or things to report on for CNN.  Jupiter oversizes everything it touches and connected to “Winged Messenger” Mercury it can yield the proverbial “diarrhea of the mouth,” hence the need for 24/7 news coverage.

When CNN launched, expansive Jupiter was in Virgo, along with Mars and Saturn.  Virgo is perfect for in-depth news analysis, as this sign is all about dissecting the facts and information that Gemini has collected.  The descriptive keyword for Virgo is “analysis.” In the physical body, Virgo rules the intestines, the part of the body that breaks down food particles so that they may be digested.

Practical, stabilizing Saturn was also in a supportive sextile to inventive Uranus in transforming Scorpio.  Uranus rules television broadcasting.  Saturn here provided firm footing for the new Uranian venture. You always want to have positive Saturn aspects, as Saturn gives longevity and worldly success.

Additionally, Saturn was exactly square to Neptune in Sagittarius, the sign of long-distance travel and faraway lands.  Neptune rules images and television cameras. CNN became a pioneering platform for broadcasting news images from around the world.

From the beginning, CNN also helped build and fostered a sense of Neptunian oneness.  Neptune is all about dissolving the borders that separate us, both personally and collectively. With CNN, we were finally able to see and hear about what was going on around the world and I think that made us feel more connected in our humanity.

Happy Birthday to you, CNN! We are so glad for your success and we appreciate all that you have done for the world in the way of stellar news coverage. (Also a big shout out to that really cute, Gemini reporter, Anderson Cooper.)

Other June 1st Gemini Birthdays: Marilyn Monroe and Andy Griffith (born on the very same day).

Enjoy your Tuesday. Make some exciting news of your own today.

“It’s a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.” Albert Einstein

The Sun has moved out of sedentary Taurus and into the naturally curious and chatty sign of Gemini. Gemini natives are restless with eclectic interests. They are usually walking encyclopedias due to their inveterate fact-gathering. They also equally love to share the information that they have compiled.

This Gemini energy inclines us to be more inquisitive now in our daily lives.  It’s also a good time for us to take up new studies, although after that Einstein quote, perhaps we’re better off studying on our own versus anything formal.

The Moon in studious Virgo supports the Gemini Sun today insofar as both are ruled by the planet Mercury, which governs our reasoning ability, and both like to figure things out.  However, Virgo is much more thorough and detailed, while Gemini is more diffuse.

Nevertheless today is an excellent day for any projects or tasks that call for a good measure of analysis. We are also more introspective with the Virgo Moon.

Venus in sensitive Cancer turns the volume up on our emotional needs in relationships.

In the News…

With Jupiter and Uranus in idealistic Pisces continuing their opposition to austere Saturn in Virgo, the sign of labor, there were labor strikes in Greece and Spain Thursday over their respective governments belt-tightening (Saturn) measures.

Jupiter expands whatever it is connected with and conjoined now with rebel Uranus we see this configuration manifesting as the urge for revolt (depicted by Uranus) resulting in some measure of chaos and anarchy.  Jupiter and Uranus fueled by escapist Pisces want to defiantly break free but restrictive Saturn is like a noose around their neck and will not budge. No-frills Saturn is perennially about “doing more with less” and adhering to a budget. This is not sitting well with much of the populace.

Growth (Jupiter-Uranus) is possible now but it has to be based on sound principles and drawing from previous tried and true experience (Saturn).  It is much riskier going out and starting something new from scratch now and forget about starting anything lavish, without the necessary funds. Saturn won’t let you get away with it. Pluto won’t either!

We have also seen the financial markets tanking due in large part to debt-fears and worry (Saturn).

Remember a couple days ago in my horoscope when I wrote about the “weird” Sun square Neptune influence and that we had to be careful because we could get hoodwinked, especially financially.  I also discussed how that influence is often “ego-denying” and also how things sometime just “dissolve” and pass out of our lives under that configuration?

Unfortunately, that is exactly when we had that Paris art theft which robbed the world of five great paintings worth hundreds of millions of dollars, including works by Picasso and Matisse.  Neptune rules art and paintings and the challenging square that day from the acquisition-oriented Taurus Sun (ruling money and possessions) perhaps cosmically fueled this greedy act by the perpetrators. Neptune rules con men and “get rich quick schemes” and even though that day I wrote to steer clear of trying to make a fast buck, these criminal minds did exactly that.

I do believe, however, that the Universe has a way of balancing the karmic scales, so whoever did this will eventually have to pay, one way or the other, but in the meantime, it is very sad that these  (Neptune) paintings have suddenly “dissolved” from world view. That is often how Neptune energy operates, we can’t understand why certain things have to “pass away.”  John F. Kennedy was assassinated under a strong Neptune influence (Saturn square Neptune).

Speaking of “world view” also with Sun square Neptune this week the Pakistani government blocked YouTube and Facebook citing “growing sacrilegious” content.  Neptune rules imagery and photos and also gives a preoccupation with spiritual matters.  Neptune is presently in the sign of Aquarius which rules the internet. Anyway, thought it was very interesting that with the Sun-Neptune, internet images were “banned” or suddenly snatched away again (Neptune’s dissolving ray) as well, at the same time as the paintings.

Wrapping it up here (it’s often hard for me to do with Jupiter in Gemini), yesterday we had the Sun sextile Uranus influence.  If you recall in yesterday’s blog, I mentioned that it was cool energy and very innovative.  Uranus rules genius and invention, as well as scientific breakthroughs.  Well, it was announced Thursday that the world’s first synthetic life form has been built. Definitely an Uranian announcement.  Also, must give some credit here to Mercury (governing news and communication) trine Pluto, as Pluto rules scientific research governing life and death areas.  Mercury-Pluto perennially delivers up news about historic firsts and it came through again for us here.

Enjoy your Friday! Give someone a warm hug with Venus in Cancer.

“Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

The ever-changing Moon fittingly begins this Mother’s day in the selfless sign of Pisces. No doubt she’s hoping we’ll be likewise inspired by the altruistic qualities of this sign to demonstrate a gentle mothering and caring to others, especially to those more fragile persons around us who are suffering or in crisis.

Practicing compassion not only makes others happy, it is also a way to make ourselves feel better. In Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, our hearts are always bigger. Our vision more divine.

We may experience contradictory waves of emotion as the sensitive Pisces Moon conjoins joyous Jupiter, opposes anxious Saturn and then conjuncts rebellious Uranus mid-afternoon. Immersion into some kind of creative project may be a good way to productively channel these variegated feelings.

The Moon enters adventurous Aries at 5:29 pm EDT at which time the energy becomes much more frenetic and outward. We’re ready to ramp up our engines and start all over again then.

Events in history on this date: On May 9, 2005 The Huffington Post was launched by Arianna Huffington (Cancer) and two others as a more liberal-progressive American news website and aggregated blog.

This very popular site reportedly receives 18 or 19 million visits a month, however, that number is a fluctuating estimate.  What is also noteworthy here is that they’re registering more than a million comments each month from their countless stream of articles.

Too, while HuffPost is known for its focus on politics, it has successfully expanded into other areas including business, entertainment and sports.

On the launch date, we find the Sun in consolidating Taurus making a positive sustaining sextile to longevity Saturn in nurturing Cancer. The Sun position in a horoscope is always very important as it depicts the life force in the chart in which everything else revolves.  We always want to have a strong Sun placement as it provides vitality and spirit for a being or enterprise.

Here in materialistic Taurus, the Sun is practically grounded and the link to utilitarian, survivalist Saturn endows it with an intrinsic understanding of how to use all the resources at its disposal.

The Sun is also in a close, more challenging square to idealistic Neptune in Aquarius, the sign of the collective.  The dreamy Neptune influence acts as an antidote, in some ways, to the more cautious, conservative Sun-Saturn energy.

Sun-Neptune is goaded into action more by a sense of vision and lofty ideals and less by practical considerations, especially with Neptune being in the sign of brotherly love Aquarius. Sun-Neptune intrinsically seeks to inspire and enlighten others. There can particularly be a strong need to want to be a voice for persons or groups who are disenfranchised.

A lot of political leaders, including U.S. Presidents, have had Sun-Neptune prominent in their charts, as it seems to install some measure of a “Messiah-complex” with Neptune symbolically representing our link to the Divine.

Neptune also governs visual images as well as charisma.  Sun-Neptune energy often denotes figures or entities that engage us or captivate us in some magical way.  Neptune is the purveyor of illusion.  It also rules glamor, disguise and hopeless addiction. The Huffington Post is a master when it comes to leveraging visual imagery along with written content, another reason why so many maybe have become hooked on the blog. Lucky Jupiter’s placement in social Libra also adds to the successful public appeal of it.

The emotional Moon was also in the communication sign of Gemini at its inception, giving a natural communication ease as well as bestowing a deep need for interacting and articulating with the environment.

Pioneering Mars was also powerfully conjoined with innovative, trend-setter Uranus in Pisces on the launch day. Pisces is the sign that the very imaginative Neptune rules.  This influence attests to brilliance and genius and confers marked ability for a farsighted strategy that is able to project well into the future.

With Mars-Uranus in the Huffington Post horoscope there is also an unbridled passion for discovering new horizons as well as an aptitude for altering, updating existing environments. Uranus is furthermore the technology guru and with energetic Mars conjunct it, there would be easy access and talent for all things technological.

Also on that day, communicator Mercury, the purveyor of news and information, was in adventurous Aries, powerfully aspected (trined) to investigative Pluto in Sagittarius, the sign of publishing and journalism. Pluto denotes depth and all things hidden. Under Pluto’s ray, and aligned with Mercury, we  go deep into our thoughts.  We experience depth perception.

Pluto also represents power, control and transformation. Together with Mercury, we very much want to control and transform others (Pluto rules the masses) through our ideas (Mercury). We strive very hard to have our words unleash a powerful punch so as to have maximum impact.

Pluto also represents ”historic firsts.”  Mercury-Pluto days are often times when we hear about “history-making” events that alter the consciousness of the masses.  So it is not surprising that the Huffington Post has had a history shaping impact on the collective.

Mercury-Pluto is really an ideal aspect to have in a news-oriented horoscope as it is indicative of always trying to get the big scoop, always striving to get to the bottom of things.  This is because it is fueled by an obsessive, insatiable passion for uncovering what lies at the essence of every matter.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Happy Mother’s Day!

And, Happy Fifth Birthday to the Huffington Post!

“We spend our time searching for security and hate it when we get it.” John Steinbeck.

The Moon’s foray through innovative Aquarius give us an itch to defy convention and try something new, even if it puts some of our security at risk.

The lingering Sun square Mars energy is also suggesting to us that we may want to move outside our comfort zone and expose ourselves to new circumstances.

While the idea of change can be daunting, it can also be empowering.  Sometimes incorporating change into our lives in the form of baby steps is the wisest course of action, until we get more familiar with stepping outside our world.

“All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.” Anatole France.

Often changing our lives for the long-term is simply a matter of changing our daily habits.  We are, after all, essentially what we do every day.

As change agent Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, gets ready to enter Aries, the sign of personal new beginnings, we may want to start thinking about phasing in new habits into our lives.

It usually is most effective if we begin by implementing only one new habit at a time and giving it time to gel.  Usually a 30-day period is what is needed.

It’s best to write down on a piece of paper our reasons, motivations, and strategies for making changes as well as keeping a daily log or journal of our progress.  We also need to remember to reward ourselves for our successes along the way.

“Expelled from individual consciousness by the rush of change, history finds its revenge by stamping the collective unconsciousness with habits and values.” Arthur M. Schlesinger.

In the News:

A painting by Picasso “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” sold for $106.5 million last night at Christie’s, setting a record as the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at an auction.  Picasso reportedly painted the picture in one day.

What I thought was most notable here astrologically: The transiting Sun in Taurus exactly square pioneering Mars in Leo.  Taurus rules money and possessions and Mars in Leo represents creative endeavors.  Mars is adventurous and often denotes “firsts” while the square “forces action.”

With the Sun in the possession sign of Taurus, aligned with risk-taker Mars in creative Leo, there was “more of a mindset” to spend a record amount of money for the artwork.

We also still have Mercury in acquisition Taurus separating from a trine to history-making Pluto Capricorn, which is a very status-conscious sign.  Of course, owning a Picasso is something of status.

Transiting Uranus is also at the last degree of Pisces, the sign of the zodiac which rules paintings and artwork. The nature of Uranus is unpredictable and Uranus more often than not ushers in new trends.

Uranus also equates to genius. Positioned at the end of Pisces, as it is now, could it be that Uranus is symbolically paying special homage to one of the most talented painters who ever lived?  Just a thought. I always regard planets at the end of the signs as having special significance for the collective, usually in a very spiritual and transforming way.

Picasso himself was a transforming figure born under Scorpio.  He also had four planets and Chiron in Taurus in his tenth house of career.  Taurus, ruled by beauty-loving Venus, can be very artistic and talented at creating objects of beauty.

Presently, both transiting Uranus and Neptune are exactly aspecting Picasso’s Pluto in Taurus in his career house.  Pluto rules death and rebirth and is associated with historic precedents – even from beyond the grave.

Also very interesting here, Picasso’s birth chart Pluto was at 29 degrees of Taurus, maybe signaling from the start that he was going to have a huge impact with his artwork on the collective (Pluto rules the masses).  This is again riding on the theory that planets at end degrees have special potency and meaning, reflecting a full maturation of what is originally intended with the sign. Taurus signifying artistic prowess.

Neptune, as ruler of Pisces (and the higher octave of Venus-ruled Taurus) , is also associated with art and paintings.  Neptune, too, interestingly enough, is exactly conjunct Picasso’s 8th house of death now.  This house also pertains to matters of his estate.  Suffice it to say, the beneficiaries to Picasso’s estate are very happy today that Neptune is there, don’t you think? Neptune on the regenerating 8th house, the rich legacy of his painting continues and reaches a new level on the material plane.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Saturn-Uranus 2010: New Same-Sex Hospital Rules

President Obama ordered new rules Thursday allowing for “same sex hospital visits.”  The new regulations give gays and lesbians the right to visit their partners in the hospital and have input into their care.  This marriage benefit has been something that has not always been extended to gay couples.

“Gay and lesbian Americans…are often barred from the bedsides of the partners with whom they may have spent decades of their lives-unable to be there for the person they love, and unable to act as a legal surrogate if their partner is incapacitated,” Mr. Obama said in his order according to the online Wall Street Journal.

These new rules come on the heels of Saturn’s retrograde back into the sign of Virgo (Virgo rules health) and its opposition to change-agent Uranus in Pisces (Pisces rules hospitals).  Saturn pertains to rules and established protocol while oppositions bring about “turning points.” Uranus, as ruler of the expanded, liberated collective Aquarius, would be representative of gays and lesbians here.

Rebel Uranus characteristically attempts to overturn the structure that Saturn has put into place, especially when that structure has the affect of “stifling or repressing” individual self-expression. In this instance, Uranus in Pisces served as a catalyst for changing the rules (Saturn) that hospitals (Pisces) have traditionally followed, regarding the dissemination of health care services (Virgo).  Uranus in Pisces triggered the need for new policy with a wider application among a diverse population group. The present Saturn opposition to Uranus formally “finalized” this policy change.

Additionally supportive for the implementation of these new rules: Venus, which rules love relationships, and Mercury, which governs thinking, are conjoined now in practical, workable Taurus. Both planets are also harmoniously sextile to expansive Jupiter in Pisces, the sign of hospitals. Venus aligned with Jupiter is traditionally regarded as one of the “luckiest aspects” in astrology, bringing about favorable conditions and circumstances.  So, on the surface, this would seem to be an especially good time (Jupiter) to usher in new guidelines (Mercury) pertaining to “intimate couples” (Venus). Jupiter’s ray is such that it tends to have a broadening or growth affect on the areas or activities that are ruled by the sign that it is passing through.  Jupiter intrinsically represents and fosters new growth opportunities and generally coincides with a more optimistic outlook.

“There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.  One is roots; the other, wings.” Hodding Carter.

Moon continues in anchoring Taurus supplying us with a goodly amount of “grounded energy.” We are able to focus in an unobstructed way. Harmonious influences from Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter add to the pleasure and comfort that we take in our surroundings. Connections with others are more enjoyable and effortless.

In the News:

Peace and love, everyone.  Enjoy your Friday!

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” Dr. Seuss, American Writer and Cartoonist.

Our focus turns to our relationships today as the Moon leaves work-oriented Virgo and enters social Libra at 7:21 am EDT.  Libra is the sign of balance, so with the Moon here we are poised to take inventory of our relationships with an eye to evaluating whether or not they contain a good amount of give and take.  Also, we may be inclined now to ponder exactly how it is that our relationship needs are getting met.

We also have a Full Moon in Libra at 10:25 pm EDT adding even more weight and focus to the relationship realm. Full Moons always represent a culmination of awareness so we are better able to have potential breakthroughs in realizing exactly what relationship moves we may need to make. Venus, which rules the “love urge,” is also exactly sextile (an opportunity aspect) to mystical Neptune. This Venus-Neptune exchange of energy can make us seek out a more “spiritualized” type of love reflecting perhaps our desire for meeting a “soul mate.”

Famous persons born on this date: John Major, Pearl Bailey, Billy Carter, Terence Hills

In the news: President Obama (a Leo) made a “surprise trip” to Afghanistan on Sunday.  Not really a surprise, however, if we look at his horoscope now.  Mars, the planet that rules war, is at 2 degrees of Leo exactly conjoined his Mercury in Leo (which is also at 2 degrees).  Mercury rules our thinking and thought processes and conjunct “warrior Mars” now, it is natural that President Obama would be more inclined to want to go visit, in person, a “war zone,” especially since he is Commander-in-Chief. The nature of Mars is also very assertive (Mars rules the aggressive urge) so he is potentially more desirous of wanting to personally strike up communication (Mercury) with other world leaders (which Leo rules). He is also likely feeling much more self-confident in and energized by his ideas. (Mars will be conjunct President Obama’s Mercury through the first few days of April.)

Peace and love, everyone! Enjoy your Monday!
