“We are driven by five genetic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun.” William Glasser.

There’s a feeling of liberation today as the Moon frolics through forward-thinking Sagittarius.  We feel a little like the tiny mouse that has escaped the clutches of a big fat cat. We require space to roam around.  We don’t want anyone cornering us.

With the Moon’s quinqunxes to Mercury and the Sun in slower-moving Taurus, we may feel a little awkward articulating or discussing more practical concerns. We need a little more time to weigh and digest in this area.  Other than that, the energy of the day is very enthusiastic and free-flowing. We have a sextile to social Venus, a trine to energetic Mars.

The Sagittarius Moon gives us a good measure of forward momentum to handle the ongoing Saturn-Uranus opposition.  What to keep, what to let go?  Today we may feel more comfortable letting go.  It’s not such a scary thing now. We are more hopeful. We reckon change might be a welcome dinner guest.

“All of life is a foreign country.” Jack Kerouac

Event in history on this date: April 30, 1939 – NBC / RCA 1st public TV demo with Franklin D. Roosevelt at opening of New York World’s Fair.

On that day, pioneering Mars in Capricorn, the sign which rules public officials (depicting Roosevelt here), was exactly harmoniously trine to Neptune in Virgo.  Neptune rules pictures; Virgo reveals the inner workings of things.  Perfect mix of energy for showcasing the magic of television.

Expansive  Jupiter was also near the end of  Neptune-ruled Pisces applying to a trine to transforming Pluto in Cancer, the sign of home and family. Whenever Jupiter travels through a sign it tends to create new opportunities for the areas ruled by that sign. Of course as we all know, the TV would eventually end up as a fixture in homes everywhere around the world, changing our daily lives and also dramatically (Pluto) impacting families.

Moon continues her stay in renewing Scorpio harmoniously trining warmhearted Jupiter in Pisces (10:05 am EDT), elevating our faith, generating ample opportunities for personal and interpersonal healing.  Highly recommended that we make kind overtures and gestures to others, as a show of good will.

Venus in Gemini quinqunx Pluto in Capricorn suggests that we may need to make a shift in our priorities or focus in a relationship.  Also, Venus-Pluto perennially warns us against misusing other people’s resources so as to gain a personal advantage. (The latter, too, would be a less enlightened response to the Scorpio Moon energy, which on a lower vibration, can be controlling.)

The nation’s first offshore wind farm project, off the coast of Cape Cod, got the go ahead Wednesday (Scorpio Full Moon Day) after nine years of regulatory review. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar approved the highly contested “Cape Wind” project saying it ushered in an era of clean energy in the U.S.

The project’s developer, Cape Wind Associates, says it plans to build 130 turbines about five miles off the Cape Cod coast by the end of the year.  The $1 billion project, which will cover 24 square miles, is expected to be challenged legally by those parties opposed to the construction.

Generally, a wind farm is viewed as a way to move away from our dependence on fossil fuels for electricity.

However, local Cape Cod residents have opposed this particular project citing, among other things, that it would interfere with tourism and boating and obstruct coastal views.

Uranus rules technological and scientific advancements and it is presently in the sign of Pisces which rules both the sea and oil.  So, the offshore wind farm would be depicted by Uranus in Pisces.

Saturn in Virgo would be representative of the residents who want to preserve the pristine (Virgo) coast as it is.

With Saturn opposite Uranus we always have a tug of war between the old (Saturn) and the new (Uranus).  Oppositions denote turning points.

Of course, we have Saturn, Pluto, and Mercury retrograde, so who knows if this project will even get off the ground as slated.  There will likely be reversals, delays. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see the Saturn opposite Uranus aspect playing out in real life, isn’t it?

“Tell me what you feel in your room when the full moon is shining in upon you and your lamp is dying out, and I will tell you how old you are, and I shall know if you are happy.” Henri Frederic Amiel

As the Moon becomes full in mysterious Scorpio (8:19 am EDT) we’re given a special invite by Pluto in Capricorn to enter a Secret Chamber that deftly houses our innermost sacred being.  If we accept his hospitality, there’s a good chance that we may find some previously heretofore hidden treasure lurking about.

Full Moons masterfully bath us in awareness. This one today at 8 degrees of Scorpio with a T-Square to Mars in Leo and the Sun and Mercury Retrograde in Taurus does not disappoint.

Under its spell, we are privy to altering insights about our inner emotional landscapes and feelings. We become more cognizant of our basic core inklings and receive testament on what provokes or prods our passions.

What is our heart’s truest desire? What do we most covet? What is it that arouses our anger? What are we most fearful of losing? What is blocking us and holding us back?  These are some of the issues and questions we can effectively focus on now and get answers to under the full beam of the ever-illuminating Scorpio Moon.

Scorpio energy is intensely emotional and self-examining, providing us with opportunity for clarity and redemptive purging. We balance this out with the opposing, more placid Taurus energy, which is very grounding and helps us to manifest our intentions.

This Full Moon is an excellent time for clearing and renewing ourselves, as the fixed Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio energy is concentrated and purposeful, allowing us to accomplish whatever we set out to do.

While there is always some resistance to change with the fixed signs, the energy now is much more malleable due to the powerful healing and rejuvenating aspects from Pluto to the Sun, Mercury and the Moon.

We also still have the exact opposition from Saturn in Virgo to Uranus in Pisces, which depicts a tug of war between the old and the new.  This Scorpio Full Moon beneficially assists us in our quest to move forward (Uranus) while pitching outworn elements of the past (Saturn).

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” – Lao Tzu

Sometimes it is hard to know what to let go of and what to hold on to.

That is what we are facing now as Saturn in Virgo exactly opposes Uranus in Pisces. Saturn represents the Old Guard.  Uranus represents the New Order.

Oppositions signify turning points in consciousness.

Letting go of people, situations, desires, can be painful.  However, holding onto aspects of our lives that are clearly outworn or not really in our best interests, can serves as a roadblock to our moving ahead.

Now is a good time for us to make peace with the past. We should be thankful for the full range of experiences that we have had. Furthermore, we need to trust in the universe that what lies ahead will be exactly what we need for where we are in our journey.

The universe is recommending that we travel lighter now, and not bring along so many bags filled with the same old tired wardrobe. Styles change.  We need to, too.

Astrology: Mercury Pluto And The AIDS Virus Discovery

The statistics on AIDS are staggering.

More than 25 million people around the world have died from AIDS-related diseases.

At the end of 2007, UNAIDS estimated that 32.9 million people were living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.  That’s compared to to 29.5 million in 2001.

Suffice it to say, probably most of us have been touched by HIV/AIDS in some fashion or form.  I was first personally impacted in the early 1990s when a co-worker of mine died from AIDS. We were the same age.  I remember he had open sores all over his legs from the disease.

HIV is a “lentivirus” that attacks the immune system. The term “lentivirus” denotes a “slow virus” that takes a long time to manifest harmful affects in the body.

As most of us know, HIV is spread by sexual contact with an infected person. It can also be transmitted by sharing needles or syringes with someone who is infected. Less commonly, it is spread by blood transfusion, but the incidence of this has gone down with the advent of blood-screening for HIV antibodies.

The first recognized cases of AIDS occurred in the U.S. in mainly gay men in the early 1980s.

It was back on April 23, 1984 that the AIDS (acquired immune deficiency) virus was identified. The discovery of the AIDS virus was viewed at the time as a gigantic breakthrough in medical research.

On the same day the AIDS virus was identified, transiting Mercury was exactly opposite Pluto in Scorpio. But unless you were an astrologer, you probably didn’t know that at the time. Nor would you have cared.

Mercury rules news and information. It also governs our thinking and ideas.

Opposition aspects often signify turning points or a culmination in awareness.

Pluto, as the ruler of the sign of Scorpio, symbolizes death and rebirth and transformational changes. Pluto’s ray is often associated with life-altering events, historic firsts, and yes, breakthrough discoveries.

Scorpio is the sign of the zodiac that is also connected specifically to medical research. It also rules sex, and Pluto represents sexual issues.

So, to an astrologer, the news of the day on April 23, 1984, of the discovery of the AIDS virus, while exciting and wonderful, was not altogether unexpected due to the Mercury alignment with Pluto. Again, with Mercury Pluto, we expect to hear about monumental achievements or firsts. Mercury opposes Pluto once a year for two or three days.

What is also noteworthy here, when life-altering, transforming Pluto entered the sex sign of Scorpio, is essentially when most of us really became aware of AIDS.  It’s also when we started seeing glimpses of the impact of that deadly disease upon the world. Pluto first entered Scorpio in November of 1983.  It left that sign in November of 1995.

Astrology: Saturn in Taurus Sets Stage for “First Earth Day”

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find resources of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” Rachel Carson.

“Taurus” is the sign of stewardship. Under its influence, we learn how to value and effectively manage our resources.

So it should come as no surprise that on the very first “Earth Day,”  April 22, 1970, transiting Saturn, which also depicts the Earth in astrology, was moving through the sign of Taurus.

Earth Day was originally founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as a way to inspire awareness and appreciation for the resources of the Earth.

As many of us know, Saturn is traditionally billed as the “Taskmaster,” he teaches us some of our most important lessons in life. Some astrologers equate him to “karma.”

Saturn also shows us where we may have blockages or limitations and where we may be resistant to change.

Saturn itself represents the “principle of conservation.” With Saturn, we often are forced to make do with less, often through hardship or loss.  As a result, we learn not to waste any of the resources at our disposal.

I think Saturn in Taurus finally began to open our eyes to the fact that the Earth’s resources are finite, and that they needed to be better preserved.  We started coming to the conclusion that we had not been managing Earth’s bounty properly. We had been wasteful and self-indulgent.

Also at the time of the first Earth Day, expansive Jupiter, the planet of opportunity, was at 0 degrees of Scorpio, the sign of rebirth, depicting opportunity for a “re-awakening consciousness.”  I think it was very symbolic, too, that it had just entered that sign, spawning fresh awareness.

Scorpio also has to do with management of joint or shared resources, as the opposite sign to Taurus. Very appropriate here for the management of shared resources and Earth Day, this quote by Wendell Barry:

“The earth is what we all have in common.”

What was also very beautiful about the energy of April 22, 1970, Venus, showing what we love and value, was at home in its own sign of Taurus and applying to an exact harmonious trine to transforming Pluto in Virgo.  Pluto is the ruler of regenerating Scorpio and represents the Earth’s inner core, while Virgo governs health and proper nutrition.

It’s as if suddenly that day, with Venus trine Pluto, we had a new, healthy, transforming love affair with Earth, with a desire to make it a better place. We got a renewing glimpse of its value and meaning to all of us. Venus-Pluto is associated with emotionally powerful love affairs that seem to have the added element of “fate” or “destiny” to them.

“There is enough for all. The earth is a generous mother; she will provide in plentiful abundance food for all her children if they will cultivate her soil in justice and in peace.” Bourke Coekran.

Chiron Enters Pisces: Dorothy Height Dies, Medical Marijuana

Was it symbolic or ironic that the very day that Chiron, the Wounded Healer, enters Pisces, the leading female figure of the 1960s civil rights movement, 98-year-old Dorothy Height, dies?  The last time that Chiron was in Pisces was 1960 to 1969 coinciding with the rise of the civil rights movement and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of of 1964. Pisces at its most noble expression represents Divine Love and compassion and the transcendence of physical boundaries.  Chiron symbolizes our deepest wounds and attempts to heal them.

I think it was symbolic that this woman, whose life work embodied and depicted so much in the way of racial healing for the collective, should die on the day Chiron re-entered Pisces, as it shows that we have come full circle back to the past, several decades later. As a society we are still dealing with issues of racial inequality, although thanks to leaders like Dorothy Height, much progress has also been made. Still much more needs to be done and perhaps with Chiron here again in Pisces, we will see the dissolution of more of the barriers that divide us, and not just racial barriers. We need to also work on ending bias and discrimination based on sexual orientation, religion, age, as well as gender.

Also today, the D.C. Council approved a bill to allow chronically ill patients to use marijuana with some stipulations. Of course, the medical marijuana issue has been ongoing for the last few years in various cities across the country, but when I heard about this story today I immediately felt that with Chiron here in Pisces now, the sign which rules drugs, including marijuana, that it will probably not be too long before medical marijuana will be universally legalized as a treatment method. I also think Neptune entering Pisces will also have impact on this area.

This whole marijuana issue, too, in a roundabout way, takes us back into the sixties again, in some respects.  Back then, with Chiron in Pisces, there was the popularization of psychedelic drugs as a way to transcend the limitations of the physical body and free our minds. More and more people also began smoking pot then. There was also widespread fear, especially among the over 30 crowd, that pot-smoking would lead to becoming addicted to other kinds of  drugs.  Now fast forward to today, and marijuana is starting to be viewed in a whole new way, more along the lines of a medicinal drug. It all strikes me as kind of ironic.  How about you?

“Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand: Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand!” Edna St. Vincent Millay.

The Moon enters nesting Cancer at 7:39 am EDT accenting home and family matters. Cancerian energy is nurturing and protective and is sometimes afraid of letting go or venturing outside of perceived comfort zones. If instead of taking giant leaps forward today, some of us may wish to begin our respective journeys with baby steps, that’s quite alright. What’s most important, is that we make that first step. Sometimes, too, when we proceed more tentatively, we become aware of meaningful realities that we never even knew existed.

The Sun is finishing up its annual romp in Aries today.  It’s perhaps a little pooped, anyway, getting ready to head into consolidating Taurus.  So much recent focus on self-discovery and trailblazing. The Sun’s quinqunx to Saturn in Virgo  also has Saturn asking the Sun now for a full acccounting of  what he has gleaned in recent weeks.  He is anxious for the Sun to perfect himself and his skills.

“This is the very perfection of a man, to find out his own imperfections.” Saint Augustine.

Memorable event in history on this date: April 19, 2005 – Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, becomes the 265th Pope. The Cardinal (b. 4/16/27) had the transiting and transforming Pluto in Sagittarius exactly conjoined his 10th house of career when he became Pope. Pluto often delivers to us those life-altering experiences and circumstances that can only be described as our destiny. Pluto also rules power and control and Pluto’s alignment on his 10th house conferred upon him the ultimate power as head of the Catholic church. The sign of Sagittarius is on the Cardinal’s career house in his birth chart, originally suggesting a possible life path in religion, as Sagittarius rules traditional religion. The Pope also has several other aspects in his horoscope that reiterate a more spiritually focused undertaking for this life.

Peace and love, everyone.  Enjoy your Monday!

Joan of Arc believed she was “handpicked by God” to lead the army of France in battles with England.  Although she felt “war” was part of her calling, she did not carry a weapon on the battlefield, as she reportedly did not want to “hurt anyone.” She only carried a banner.

Joan of Arc was declared a saint by the Catholic Church on April 18, 1909.  At the time, Saturn, the planet associated with protocol and recognition, was in Aries, the sign which pertains to combat.  It was also in exact alignment (square) to Neptune in Cancer. Neptune represents our “link to the Divine” and governs all matters spiritual, while Cancer rules the nurturing principle and represents home, family, and our roots.

Very fittingly, the “Saturn-Neptune” influence manifested in such a way that day that Joan of Arc, a past war figure (Saturn in Aries)  was formally bestowed a “spiritual status” or “sainthood” (Neptune) by the Catholic Church (deeper religious “Cancerian roots”).
