“That’s what people do who love you. They put their arms around you and love you when you’re not so lovable.” Deb Caletti

COSMIC WATCH:

Blackbird Chicks In Nest

The Moon remains in “nesting” Cancer, all day. Knowing that we have a “place to call home,” and people around us who “have our back,” no matter what, is especially comforting for us now. This lunar position can also invoke our patriotism, or allegiance to our tribe – the “first chakra” issues.  The Moon goes void-of-course in Cancer at 12:53 pm, and will remain so until it shifts into “self-expressive” Leo at 6:34 pm, on Sunday.

The Cancer Moon forms a square to “erratic” Uranus, late this morning, at 11:49 am. This could bring about some emotional vacillation, as well as a desire to “bust out of our routines.” We may also need to be flexible with matters on the home front, especially when things do not go as planned. Too, surrendering our expectations for how things are “supposed to be,” and going, instead, with what wants to show up in the moment, can be a very positive way to navigate this period. Uranus symbolizes the unexpected, change, taking new approaches, liberation, radical thinking, people who break or circumvent the rules, astrologers, inventors, electrical activity.

The Moon also forms an opposition to “tell it like it is” Pluto, 12:53 pm. While this more emotionally intense influence can lead us to “the truth,” we may want to refrain now from acting upon any of the burgeoning revelations, until we’ve at least had a chance to sit with them for a while. Kind of like when we take a cake out of the oven, we don’t want to cut it, while it’s still hot. Pluto symbolizes secrets, or what has been hidden, the domain of the subconscious, the basement of a house, plumbing, extremist views, obsessions, grave-diggers, miners, psychotherapists.

“Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” Spock, Star Trek. Rest in peace, Leonard Nimoy. (March 26, 1931 – February 27, 2015)

* All times are EST.

Question for Today: Is there anything you’ve been wanting to say to a family member, but just haven’t said it yet? (This could also include those family members who have transitioned.) If so, what exactly would you like to say?

In the News: With the Moon in “security-driven” Cancer, and forming a fluid trine to “putting aside our differences” Neptune, the U.S. Congress finally passes “Stopgap Funding for Homeland Security,” late last night (wsj.com).

Earlier in the evening, the Cancer Moon was also square to Mars in “initiating” Aries.  Squares are often synonymous with our needing to take prompt action. It is also the nature of “warrior” Mars to act swiftly on matters that are deemed necessary for our survival and well-being. Had Congress not acted on this measure by midnight, funding for Homeland Security was set to expire.

Astrology January 8, 2012: Mercury Aspects Jupiter and Uranus

COSMIC WATCH:

Intellectual Mercury’s shift into “cautious” Capricorn tends to make us more pragmatic and utilitarian with our thoughts and ideas, although today may not be the typical poster child for Mercury here in this earth sign as the Winged Messenger forms a trine to “big picture” Jupiter and also a square to “out of the box” Uranus. While we do, overall, want our mental musings to move us forward in a practical, linear manner now, we are also likely waxing very philosophical (Jupiter) today and able to incorporate or at least tolerate more radical or untested elements (Uranus) into our mindset.  Accordingly, this is an excellent day to entertain opposing viewpoints, embrace new methods, and explore new options for ourselves. Too, this does not mean that we have to necessarily immediately act upon whatever is revealed to us today. It may really be more of a matter of stretching ourselves and growing cerebrally. Too, Mercury-Uranus tends to be an aspect that quickens or speeds up our mental processes. On the shadow side, it can make us a bit more mentally restless or unstable.

Additionally, the nurturing Cancer Moon is advocating that, along our journey today, we also remember to take time to lovingly administer some self-care to ourselves and also do what we can to fortify our base of operations and familial roots and ties. The emotional Cancer Moon will be reaching its “full phase” early tomorrow morning, meaning that there is more of a crescendoing of sensitivities now.

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” Helen Keller

Today’s Affirmation:  I am fluid and open to what the world has to offer me today. I also know that it is okay if I do not know all the answers. The more important thing may be to simply ask the questions, to perhaps challenge the status quo.

How could you stretch your perceptions today?

One more thing. Being a big Elvis fan, I would be remiss if I did not mention that “the king” would have been 77 years old today. Astrologically, Elvis, a Capricorn Sun native, had a fascinating horoscope with a grand cardinal cross which often is symbolic of someone who comes along and galvanizes the world in some notable way. Elvis also had the rebel planet, Uranus, exactly conjunct his fifth house of self-expression and talent. Uranus was also in pioneering Aries in his chart, just like it is today. Uranus governs the expression of genius and originality.

“From the time I was a kid, I always knew something was going to happen to me. Didn’t know exactly what.” Elvis Presley

Miss you, Elvis. Enjoy your Sunday!

COSMIC WATCH:

“Work, love and play are the great balance wheels of man’s being.” Orison Swett Marden

There’s a Full Moon in “career” Capricorn today (2:40 am EDT). Meaning that the Sun is in opposition to the Moon from “nesting” Cancer. With a Full Moon we aim to balance opposing forces. In this case, our “cosmic marching order” is to create a healthy equilibrium between our professional or outer world activities (Capricorn) and our obligations or duties on the home front (Cancer). We may also encounter real-life scenarios now that trigger “hands-on experience,” or offer “extra insight,” on exactly how to do this.

For instance, there could be a sudden event in the home arena that serves as a “wake-up call” for us to change or recalibrate our priorities at work. Perhaps the event makes us realize that we have been focusing too much on our career to the detriment of the needs of our immediate environment.  Or, vice versa. Maybe we have been too busy cocooning at home and now we suddenly realize that we need to re-engage again with the outside world. Perhaps we haven’t been working for a while and now we need to re-enter the work force to supplement the family budget.

Too, it could be that the Full Moon in Capricorn serves as a lightning rod for generating new revelations about our life’s work. Or, contribution to society. It may also be a good time to ask ourselves if we are truly happy or satisfied with the professional path that we have selected. Do we think that we are doing what we came into this life to do?

If not, we may want to make some changes now. Maybe scrap certain activities that have have become counterproductive or outmoded. We may even want to consider going back to school. Get new training to expand our job skills. The Full Moon in Capricorn does form an exact creative quintile with “change-agent” Uranus in “new beginnings” Aries. Uranus often demands that we “alter” or “reinvent” ourselves, so that we can lead lives that are a greater testament to our authentic being. And less a reflection of society’s or other people’s dictates for us.

Too, Uranus rules technology. This may be a good time to upgrade our tech skills in conjunction with our career (Capricorn). Or maybe employ some new technology to aid us in a job search.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happy Full Moon Blessings!

COSMIC WATCH:

“There’s no place like home.” Dorothy, from The Wizard of Oz.

There’s a New Moon Solar Eclipse at 9 degrees of security-conscious Cancer today (4:55 am EDT), the nurturing sign of Mother and our ancestral roots that is also linked to the past. Eclipses are highly charged events that can have impact for up to six months. Too, the affects of an eclipse are often felt immediately, usually within a few days, on either side of the event (please refer to my other recent “eclipse blogs,”  for more info about this subject).

This lunation, in which the Sun and Moon are both conjunct in Cancer, also sets up a “grand cardinal cross,” or square in the sky, involving Uranus in Aries (personal freedom), Pluto in Capricorn (transformation), and Saturn in Libra (responsibility). New Moons usher in new beginnings, although Solar Eclipses can also bring about sudden endings, especially with respect to long-standing situations.

The grand cardinal cross can also coincide with critical turning points, or releases in matters, that have us “springing into action,” as a response. Our “taking action” can also have the net affect of creating new beginnings for ourselves. Too, just as the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) denote the arrival of the seasons, the activation of the cardinal cross can also denote pivotal life transitions. This “much ballyhooed configuration” is often a potent antidote or cure for any stagnating or fence-straddling tendencies.

Today’s eclipse lunation will likely have us dealing with practical issues of our own basic survival and security, something that is central to the Cancer psyche. Cancer, insulated by its crab shell, is perennially wanting to shore up its defenses and protect itself, and its family members, from possible hostile forces in the outer world. Cancer rules the home (and the womb), our personal haven and private base of operations, to which we return each day to seek solace and nourishment (Cancer also rules the food supply and eating habits).

With the sign of Cancer also being governed by the feminine Moon, women’s issues (including women’s health), as well as issues involving the family and parenting, may figure more prominently into our lives now. Too, just this week, with the Sun in Cancer making an opposition to bulldozing Pluto in Capricorn (part of the grand cross), an FDA panel unanimously voted to revoke the approval of  Avastin, a popular drug for breast cancer treatment (Cancer rules the breasts).

Also, testimony is expected to conclude today in the riveting, high-profile, Casey Anthony trial, that has much of the nation, even the world, glued to their television sets. CNN.com is also reporting that the case could go to the jury as early as this weekend. The Casey Anthony trial centers around a mother allegedly murdering her own child (Cancer-related theme of mother and child). Another example of how the grand cross energy often brings matters to a head and or provides for resolution.

Too, NYT.com is reporting today that the high-profile sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, involving a hotel maid (a Cancer-ruled occupation), has suddenly turned around and is weakening, which is a huge development. Other internet news reports, this morning, say the case against him is “imploding” or “collapsing.” In the eclipse chart again, the Sun and Moon in Cancer (the sign of hotels) oppose Pluto which rules rape and sexual assault.  Too, Pluto rules investigative efforts and often when it’s ray is activated, we find out new information that previously was hidden. Reportedly, the hotel maid now has major credibility issues.

Also, with the Eclipse’s square to freedom-loving, rebellious Uranus, in self-identity Aries, we may be tempted to be a bit more defiant now and break with convention in a bid to “do our own thing.” Of course, the Eclipse’s square to taskmaster Saturn, in partnership Libra, should also serve to hold us accountable to others for our actions. Saturn rarely lets us off the hook.

Too, Aries rules the world of sports, and last night, the NBA locked out its’ players which could imperil the 2011-12 basketball season. Could this move also be a manifestation of the volatile Uranus in Aries shaking things up in the sports world? Uranus, on the shadow side, can be a very disruptive influence.

BTW, with the transiting Cancer Sun’s square to non-traditional Uranus (part of the grand cross), this past week, we saw gay marriage, still somewhat of a controversial matter, legalized in the state of New York. Uranus is also the planet of equality and civil rights.

Again, purging, transforming Pluto (ruler of death and regeneration), stationed in utilitarian Capricorn, is a major player in today’s Eclipse, and grand cross, with the Sun and Moon in Cancer opposing it and both Uranus and Saturn squaring it. Pluto will likely have us, once again, reinventing or re-fashioning ourselves (maybe out of practical necessity). We may also discover things about ourselves (hopefully uncover some hidden strengths), that we never knew existed. Pluto characteristically speaks to the “depths of our experience.” It rules our subconscious. Basically, anything that is buried or hidden.

For instance, Pluto also rules mines, and on Wednesday, of this week, U.S. Labor Department officials announced that the Massey energy mine disaster, where 29 workers were killed more than a year ago, was preventable (from wsj.com). This finding also was released (coincidentally?) with the Sun exactly opposite to Pluto.

Too, with Pluto’s “eliminating” ray stoked, once again by the opposing Sun in Cancer, the Greek Parliament finally approved a five-year “austerity plan” for that country. Also, on our own “home front,” with this same planetary aspect, President Obama put pressure on Congress, to come up with a debt-reduction package. He also talked about ending certain tax breaks for “millionaires and billionaires.” Pluto additionally rules debt and taxes, and credit.

Pluto is also, however, not just about coping with less materially, or borrowing. It can also mean that we must pare down our range of activities, so that we can focus or concentrate our energies more. With both Pluto and Saturn, we tend to consolidate our forces.

One more thing, sort of interesting here and very applicable to today’s “home-related” Cancer eclipse. On Wednesday (again with the Cancer Sun opposite revelatory Pluto), a New York Times/CBS News Poll revealed that nearly 9 in 10 Americans say that “owning a home” is still an important part of the American dream, even though many also question it as a good investment, in wake of the brutal recession. (from NYT.com)

NEWS UPDATE Fri. afternoon 7/1: In Riverside County in California, the County Supervisor, Jeff Stone, is reportedly calling for as many as 13 southern counties in California to secede from the state and form a new state called “South California.” He reportedly proposed the idea late yesterday in a statement. I thought this proposal was fascinating, coming on the eve of the Cancer Eclipse, as Cancer rules matters of the land and state government. This “secession” also has shadows of rebel Uranus written all over it. And, Pluto, as Pluto transforms things and this would create another state.

Also, in Minnesota today, the state shut down over a budget deficit impasse (Pluto?).

Other “New Moon in Cancer” tie-ins: moving or changing residences; home remodeling or redecorating; having a yard or tag sale; matters involving homeless people and homeless shelters; self-nurturing; focusing on family issues or relationships (perhaps patching up difficulties); family reunions; outings or events with neighbors; involvement with local community activities;  genealogy research; baking, cooking, and trying out new recipes; buying home furniture or new home appliances; matters involving the restaurant or food industry; anything connected with grocery stores; food banks; matters pertaining to real estate and property investment; property tax issues; matters involving the hotel or hospitality industry; farming and agriculture; issues of homeland security and defense; acts of patriotism; doing gardening and yard work – time for planting above-ground crops (until the Full Moon); matters involving birth control, pregnancy, foster care, and adoption.

Happy Eclipse Day!

COSMIC WATCH:

“Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not understood.” Henry Miller

There are a few confusing or cryptic threads running through today’s cosmic forecast due to thinker Mercury in Cancer’s sesquiquadrate aspect to vague Neptune in “out to sea” Pisces. This is not a major influence, but nevertheless, it can create some misinterpretations or misjudgments, or communication snafus.

Basically, what we’re advised to do, as an antidote to this more ambiguous energy, is to simply clarify things as much as possible. In other words, give our tender brains a little gymnastics workout by asking questions or re-checking facts and figures, etc. This also sends a clear signal to the Universe that we are wise to its wicked shenanigans and that it best not mess with us. 🙂

Too, we have the impulsive Aries Moon chiming in here with a square to Mercury (1:30 pm EDT) which also suggests that we avoid making snap decisions on vital concerns, especially anything family or hearth-related, as remember, Mercury is in “there’s no place like home” Cancer. We also need to keep in mind that Mercury in Cancer has more of an emotional component to its style of thinking, so our feelings are more apt to permeate our thoughts now. We also tend to be more sensitive in our communications.

Later on, we do catch a lucky break with the Moon’s fun sextile to social, lovable Venus in cheery Gemini around mealtime (6:08 pm EDT), so we may want to cap off the workweek by going out to dinner with friends.Whenever Venus’s ray is kindly stoked, we have more of a desire for bonding and connecting. Venus rules our magical “power of attraction.” Venus is, however, also making a semi-square aspect to over-indulgent Jupiter in “jelly roll” Taurus (9:56 pm EDT), so we are urged to practice, at least, some measure of moderation.

“Be moderate in everything, including moderation.” Horace Porter

One more thing. If you’re a gardener, this is a great day to pull up weeds, as we have the Moon in a fire sign (Aries), along with a last quarter phase Moon, which means any weeds pulled now will take a while to grow back. This is because when the Moon is in its last quarter phase, there is a decline in energy, and a fire sign is also minus moisture. Also, a good day to mow the lawn for the same reason. Or, to get a haircut, if we do not want our hair to grow back fast.

Do you garden according to the Moon phases?

Enjoy your Friday!

COSMIC WATCH:

“Question reality, especially if it contradicts the evidence of your hopes and dreams.”  ~Robert Brault

We have mental Mercury in vulnerable Cancer squaring off with stern, reality kingpin Saturn in balancing Libra. This is one of those days when we may need to earnestly strive to see the glass half-full, as naysayer Saturn tends to conjure up our doubts and fears. We begin to second-guess ourselves.

Not to worry, though. There is surely a patch of blue sky with sunshine around us somewhere. We just have to find a way to align our personal orbits so that they will eventually intersect with this more inspiring outcome. With Saturn’s narrowing ray stoked, it is often helpful to step outside of ourselves in a bid to gain wider perspective.

Also, we do have the Moon steeped in mystical, nirvana-seeking Pisces, which should be a blessing for us here. The Moon in Pisces also helps to inspire compassion in us. Too, we may want to remember to use some of this on ourselves now, as part of our own self-care.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it is also the day of the magical summer solstice (1:16 pm EDT), when the empowering Sun enters nurturing, nesting Cancer, where it will stay for the next month. This ingress also serves to sensitize our nature and gets us much more in touch with our feelings, as well as our nostalgic past. Our need to put down firm, stable roots, is very vital to us now, as we seek out activities or interests that make us feel more secure, with special emphasis centered on the home and family arenas.

COSMIC WEATHER:

“Mothers are fonder than fathers of their children because they are more certain they are their own.” Aristotle 🙂

With the Moon’s stay in “sheltering” Cancer all day, the sign of our familial past, and with it also being “Mother’s Day,” we may be eager to embark upon an endearing, “sentimental journey” down memory lane. However, the Cancer Moon’s restless square formations to Venus, Mercury and Jupiter, in “new beginnings” Aries, and the stable Taurus Sun’s semi-square to “awakening” Uranus in Aries, also nudges us on to seek out “extraordinary” (Uranus) new experiences, perhaps with family members, in hopes of adding to our divine soul’s rich treasure trove of unforgettable moments.

“Men are wise in proportion, not to their experience, but to their capacity for experience.” George Bernard Shaw.

Famous Taurus Birthdays May 8th: Toni Tenille (71), late Ricky Nelson (71). Remember, Harriet Nelson? Ricky Nelson’s mother, from The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet? She was, perhaps, a template for the “perfect mom.” Used to love that show, and also, like other girls my age, had a huge crush on Ricky back then.

Happy Mother’s Day to all!

COSMIC WEATHER:

“People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.” Joseph F. Newton

The Moon continues in sentimental Cancer beckoning us to connect with our roots, especially our familial roots. The Moon’s chilly square to Saturn (1:15 pm EST), however, may make us feel somewhat like an island.

Too, even though we may feel “cut off” doesn’t mean we have to stay in that mindset. Especially since we also have “Love Goddess” Venus forming a magical trine to stabilizer Saturn (8:35 pm EST), a classic astrological template for building “rock solid” relationships. With Venus-Saturn we tend to get more serious-minded (Saturn) about love and romance (Venus). The idea of commitment is more appealing, perhaps because Saturn governs the “security urge.”

On another level, Venus-Saturn can also be descriptive of “May-December” romances (Saturn rules older individuals). Possibly, too, there may be more of an inclination to seek out ties with older persons at this time because these persons may be perceived as a “safe harbor” for us.

Also, assertive Mars in dreamy Pisces is quinqunx Saturn (8:54 am EST). There is a tendency to “start and stop” things, or get curtailed by hurdles, instead of just following through. The best way to override this influence is to simply keep our eyes fixed on manifesting our daily intentions or short or long-term goals, while also holding ourselves accountable (Saturn). Saturn can challenge us to be self-disciplined.

“Self-respect is the root of discipline: the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.” Abraham Joshua Heschel

“The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom on which you will always find forgiveness.” Honore de Balzac

Full Moons offer us a chance for full awareness, or full illumination. We tend to see things “more clearly” with Full Moons. The Full Moon that we have on January 19th occurs at 29 degrees of Cancer (4:22 pm EST), which is the very last degree of the sign. Moon-ruled Cancer is the sign of motherly love. Home and family. It governs nurturing and self-protection. The Cancer experience provides us with a heightened sense of our own continuation, an awareness of our roots.

With this Full Moon occurring at the very end of sensitive Cancer, there symbolically seems to be more of an urgency to it. When planets are at the last degrees, we are wrapping things up. Too, this Full Moon forms a harmonious trine to both “opportunity” Jupiter, at 29 degrees of surrendering Pisces, and to “awakening” Uranus at 27 degrees of Pisces. This suggests the possibility of an emotional breakthrough.

Individually, we will want to look at our personal horoscopes to see what house in our chart this Full Moon is falling in, as to where this breakthrough or full awareness may be occurring. It is likely that we will also see an uptick in general activity or movement in those affairs designated by the house containing the Full Moon.

Full Moons are a time of release. This Full Moon in “clinging to the familiar” Cancer may be an ideal time for us to symbolically release old hurts and wounds from our past, especially from our familial past. By emptying ourselves of this emotionally depleting arsenal, we make it possible for our more tender, nurturing impulses to again reign.

“Let your hopes, not your hurts, shape your future.” Robert H. Schuller.

“Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.” Charles Dickens.

Patricia’s Astrology Horoscope October 29, 2010: Dorothy In Oz

COSMIC WEATHER:

The Moon continues in “There’s No Place Like Home” Cancer making “Dorothy in Oz” one happy little munchkin. The “Cook-Happy” Cancer Moon also throws harmonious trines to “Good Witch” Jupiter (10:28 am EDT) and “Wizard” Uranus (3:49 pm EDT) in “Fantasy-Prone” Pisces, giving us an itch to perhaps add some dreamy “rainbow sherbet” to the menu, for a change of pace.

Later on, the Moon roars into “Warmhearted” Leo (8:39 pm EDT). Even the “Cowardly Lion” begins to purr.

Activities highlighted today: Cooking, family dinners, trying out new recipes, grocery-shopping, shopping for furniture and home appliances, redecorating the home front, investigating ancestry, involvement with charitable undertakings, whatever outlets that allow for the demonstration of our nurturing abilities.

Quote for the day:

“I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself.” Maya Angelou

On This Date in history:

On October 29, 1966 the National Organization of Women (NOW) was founded. Traditionalist Saturn was in Pisces, a sign that denotes the downtrodden and disenfranchised elements of a society. Saturn was in a tight opposition to Empowering, Equality-Ruling Uranus in Abilities and Skills Virgo.

With Saturn opposite Uranus, we had a symbolic pitting of “the old” (Saturn) against “the new” (Uranus). Rebel Uranus in Service-Oriented Virgo was perhaps suggesting here that we should “equalize our roles of service,” “level the playing field.” Allow and empower individuals (women) to “serve” in new ways.

Protocol Minded Saturn, in Ego-Denying Pisces, was also possibly generating awareness of how the established rules (Saturn), over the years, had served to imprison and deny (Pisces) free expression (Uranus) to part of the populace.

Venus, ruling women, was in Regenerating Scorpio (redefining women) and exactly square to Expansive Jupiter in Self-Expressive Leo. As an organization, NOW immediately captured the spotlight (Leo) and had major (Jupiter) transformational impact on shaping women’s behavior and self-expression.

With Venus-Jupiter, too, we sometimes “go overboard” or “get carried away” in our desires. Those critical of NOW may say that, that has also been the case, that there has always been too much “zealotry” (Jupiter) with respect to the agenda and leadership (Leo) of the organization.

The Feminine Moon was also in Stabilizing and Steady Taurus, and involved in a Fixed T-Square to both Venus and Jupiter, making for more of an “uncompromising” emotional energy that is not known for “letting go.” Adding perhaps even more resolve and determination to the NOW organization and its operational principles.
