Aretha Franklin's Respect Song hits number one, confusion, daily astrology, Mercury square Neptune, Moon in Capricorn, On This Day in History

Cosmic Weather:

“How easy it is for so many of us today to be undoubtedly full of information yet fully deprived of accurate information.” – Criss Jami

Thanks to intellectual Mercury’s challenging square to confused, space cadet Neptune, in muscular he-man Aries today (8:18 pm), it could be that trying to sort out fact from fiction may be too much of a heavy lift. Especially since we also have Mercury deposited in maudlin, cry me a river Cancer, which tends to diminish objectivity.

Too, what we often find with the more difficult Mercury-Neptune aspects (illusionist Neptune, by the way, is known as the “Great Dissolver”) is that there may be big chunks of pivotal information that is either missing or being held back – possibly even lost in outer space, in this case! – which can, of course, potentially place us at an obvious disadvantage. Which is why it would probably behoove us now to make sure that if we are in doubt about something, to make sure that we either try to ask some questions for clarification or possibly attempt to gather more information before formulating a final decision on a matter.

“Trust, but verify.” – Ronald Reagan 🙂

On This Day in History:

On June 3, 1967, Aretha Franklin’s cover of the Otis Redding’s song “Respect” reaches #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Astrologically, that day, abundant and expansive Jupiter was newly ensconced in entertainment Leo, at one degree of the sign, and artistic, feminine-ruling Venus, at 27 degrees of sensitive Cancer, was applying to a conjunction with Jupiter, a configuration that is perceived to be very lucky or propitious. (We have it coming up on June 9th!)

Also, the empowering Sun in Gemini was sextile to enduring Saturn in pioneering Aries (which is also an aspect that we just had yesterday). Harmonizing Sun-Saturn aspects often add staying power to matters.

The song’s empowerment message resonated deeply during the 1960s civil rights and feminist movements, cementing its place as a protest anthem. (Wikipedia)

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well.

Cosmic Weather:

“Don’t make excuses for why you can’t get it done. Focus on all the reasons why you must get it done.” – Ralph Marston

Sun in Gemini sextile Saturn in Aries (6:49 pm):

It appears that we may now have an enhanced ability today – at least on paper – to channel forth our inner taskmaster so as to get important projects accomplished, (Aries) trails blazed, deadlines met without requiring a whole lot of fanfare or handholding. 🙂

Sun-Saturn aspects are also deemed supportive for displaying leadership prowess with the Sun symbolizing our sense of personal power, self-confidence and authority and Saturn signifying our capacity for self-discipline, responsibility, and ability to work hard to reach our goals.

Too, with the Sun inhabiting curious, eclectic Gemini we potentially are primed to be more flexible or accommodating in our approaches now, which can be a nice counterpoint to the more seemingly unyielding energy of reality-stickler Saturn, which is typically regarded as the standard bearer/cheerleader of all that is traditional or tried and true.

“Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play.” – Immanuel Kant

On This Day in History:

On June 2, 1953, at just 27 years old, Queen Elizabeth II was formally crowned at Westminster Abbey. Though she had officially become monarch more than a year earlier upon the sudden death of her father, King George VI.

What truly set the coronation apart from all previous ones was the decision to broadcast it on television. Against the initial advice of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and traditionalists, the Queen insisted that the cameras be allowed inside Westminster Abbey. Many bought or rented their very first television sets just for this day.

Across the Atlantic, the Royal Air Force flew recordings across the ocean so millions in North America could watch on the same day. It was the world’s first truly global television event! (MSN.com)

Astrologically, among the aspects that day, pioneering Mars and reporter Mercury were exactly conjunct in broadcast-ruling Gemini and sextile to transformational Pluto (governing the masses) in opulent Leo, the official domain of kings and queens.

Too, when Mercury and Mars are paired up, especially in intellectual Gemini, and aligned with intense Pluto, we tend to have an ultra-keen mental focus regarding the matters at hand; it’s like something riveting or extra captivating is seizing our attention.

Too, Mercury and Mars were harmoniously trine to structuring, status-minded Saturn and dreamy, idealistic Neptune, which were closely conjunct in socially minded, diplomatic Libra, with the Saturn-Neptune energy potentially imparting, among other things, a strong sense of fairness and responsibility to others as well as a greater appreciation of beauty and, perhaps, appetite for pomp and circumstance.

Additionally, the Gemini Sun was conjunct expansive Jupiter, the planet of luck, vision and prosperity, an aspect which is often tied to the occurrence of mega/large-scale events, perhaps a natural byproduct of pairing the two largest bodies in our solar system together.

“I declare before you that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.” – Queen Elizabeth II

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well.

Cosmic Weather:

“The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” — Honoré de Balzac.

It appears that the planets are appropriately towing the line this Mother’s Day as the purposeful Sun in steadfast, devoted Taurus forms a harmonizing sextile to magnanimous, inclusive Jupiter in maternal Cancer (10:14 pm), an influence that ideally serves to foster/strengthen our relationships, especially those that connect us to our familial or ancestral roots.

“Storms make trees take deeper roots.” – Dolly Parton

Jupiter is viewed as the “growth factor” in astrology and when it is deposited in nurturing Cancer it is thought that we are more amenable to displaying greater amounts of empathy or compassion, which can also, ideally, add to our own reservoir of personal well-being. A win-win situation all around!

Too, many astrological devotees are also, no doubt, keeping fingers crossed that the Sun in “material girl” Taurus, sextile to “cosmic Santa” Jupiter, will work its reputed magic and result in generously replenishing all of our coffers! 🙂

Luna is also in her Waning Crescent phase in progressive Aquarius until 1:39 pm, at which time she will shift into soothing, dreamy Pisces, which is regarded as an excellent period for reflection, journaling, or cleansing/clearing out activities.

*All times EDT

On This Day in History: On May 10, 1872, Victoria Woodhall (b. 9-23-1838), a suffragist and civil rights activist, becomes the first woman nominated for the US presidency by the “Equal Rights Party” at Apollo Hall, NYC.

Astrologically, that day, philosophical, expansionist Jupiter was in Cancer – as it is now – and separating from a sextile to the empowering Sun, courageous Mars, and transformational Pluto all conjunct in determined, plodding Taurus. Jupiter was also conjunct unconventional rules-breaker Uranus, the planet associated with equality; the sign of Cancer is also linked with patriotism or love of country.

Earlier, in 1870, Victoria Woodhall co-founded Woodhull, Claflin & Co. with her sister Tennessee Claflin, making it reportedly the first female‑owned and operated brokerage firm on Wall Street. The sisters’ starting capital reportedly came from railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, who had employed them earlier as spiritualists and fortune‑tellers, giving them stock tips that he used to his advantage.

Happy Mother’s Day! Hope it’s a good one!

Cosmic Weather:

“What is imperative is to keep the momentum going. The difference between success and failure is very thin. The urge to win must be like a hunger inside you.” – Avijeet Das

With emotional Luna in her Waxing Gibbous phase and darting through athletic, fiery Aries, we may be feeling a rush of momentum now to get things done as we head towards the Cancer Full Moon on January 3rd.

This is an excellent time to take initiative, act independently, be courageous, while also taking steps/actions to safeguard our own interests or security (Luna square Jupiter, 4:59 pm).

The Moon’s monthly conjunction with Chiron (6:26 pm) also allows us the opportunity to embrace our vulnerabilities or advocate for those whose voices we don’t often hear.

Additionally, Luna’s trine to communicator Mercury in Sagittarius (9:13 pm) ignites idealistic ideas and the chance for open dialogue.

*All times EST

On This Day in History: On December 28, 1981, Elizabeth Jordan Carr was born in Norfolk, Virginia, becoming the first American test-tube baby. Her birth marked a significant advancement in reproductive technology, offering hope to countless couples struggling with infertility. The successful use of in vitro fertilization (IVF) paved the way for future developments in assisted reproductive techniques. (Wikipedia)

Interestingly enough, expansive Jupiter, associated with broadening our horizons and understanding, was in Scorpio at 5 degrees, at the time of Carr’s birth – the astrological sign that governs reproduction. Jupiter was also applying to an exact waning sextile to the life-giving Sun at 6 degrees of Capricorn. Sun-Jupiter aspects are often perceived to be lucky or advantageous in nature and bode well for learning, growth, and experimentation.

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well! I’m also looking forward to being back with you here on a more regular basis (keeping fingers crossed!).

Cosmic Weather:

“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny.” – John O’Donohue

April kicks off with relationship Venus Rx conjunct the futuristic North Node in Pisces, ideally aiding us in the forging or re-forging of ties/situations/outlets that may more seamlessly point us in the direction of our soul’s growth. There may also be greater ability to smooth over frictions, show empathy, express our creativity.

Meanwhile, Luna is now in her Waxing Crescent Phase in grounding Taurus (until 4:26 pm), emitting 15% illumination; the right edge of the Moon is all that’s visible to the naked eye.

Too, Luna is quite busy today forming several aspects. It’s wrap up passage through the sign of the bull favors, among other things, consolidating our efforts, including firming up elements of our financial/material world, as best we can. Remember: “Liberation Day” is tomorrow, April 2nd! 🙂

Additionally, Luna’s monthly conjunction with game changing Uranus (7:56 am), may suddenly jolt us into wanting to add something new or exciting to our daily routines or at least may entice us to see things from a fresh perspective.

The Moon’s late day ingress into curious Gemini (4:26 pm), may power up our intuition with its nice sextile aspect to Neptune (4:34 pm), while its flowing trine to mysterious Pluto may find us eager to channel our inner detective.

“There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.” – Arthur Conan Doyle, The Boscombe Valley Mystery – A Sherlock Holmes Short Story.

*All times EDT.

On This Day in History: On April 1, 1826, American inventor Samuel Morey is issued the first U.S. patent for an internal-combustion engine, which he calls a “Gas or Vapor Engine.”

Astrologically, that day, there was a stellium in trailblazing Aries (Pluto, Sun, Venus, and Chiron) while energizing Mars, Aries ruler, was retrograde in transformative Scorpio and sextile (2 degrees) to innovative Uranus in achievement-oriented Capricorn. Mars-Uranus influences often figure prominently with respect to spawning inventions or breakthroughs.

Samuel Morey was also a pioneer in steamships who racked up a total of 20 patents.

Astrology March 30, 2025: Neptune Enters Aries, U.S. Buys Alaska from Russia

creativity, Greenland, Neptune in Aries, On This Day in History, Seward's Folly, spirituality

Cosmic Weather:

“More smiling, less worrying. More compassion, less judgment. More blessed, less stressed. More love, less hate.” – Roy T. Bennett

Neptune enters Aries (7:59 am) –

First off, Neptune, the coldest planet in the Solar System (with an average temperature of minus 392 F), will only be making a test-run of Aries now to show us a quick, general layout of the land. In late October, it will re-enter Pisces, for three months, before moving back into the sign of the ram, late January of 2026, where it will continue to chill until early 2039.

Neptune symbolizes, among other things, idealism, compassion, spirituality, and dreams. It’s also linked to creativity and imagination. On the flip side, it rules delusion, deceit, and addiction.

Aries, meanwhile – the first sign of the zodiac – is tied with self-identity, assertiveness, fresh starts, and competitiveness. It’s also associated with the defense world i.e. the military-industrial complex (a term reportedly first coined by Malcolm Moos, a speechwriter for US President Dwight D. Eisenhower who used the phrase in his farewell address in January of 1961).

Briefly, it could be that Neptune’s ingress into action-oriented Aries might, among other things, inspire us to lean more into our faith, idealism, or creativity, in carving out new beginnings for ourselves. At the same time – on the shadow side – we may need to be more cognizant of being too immersed in “flights of fancy” or believing or putting forth narratives about ourselves that are untrue or self-sabotaging.

“To thine own self be true.” – William Shakespeare

*All times EDT.

On This Day in History: On March 30, 1867, the United States buys Alaska from Russia for $7,200,000 (109 million in 2018 dollars), roughly 2 cents an acre. The acquisition – the brainchild of US Secretary of State William Seward – was referred to as “Seward’s Folly” as some opponents felt that the purchase was “useless land.” Kind of like how the Louisiana Purchase was originally viewed by those who were opposed to it.

Astrologically, the empowering Sun at the time was applying (three degrees) to an exact conjunction with visionary Neptune in pioneering Aries.  The planetary ruler of Aries – energizer Mars – was also deposited in security-minded Cancer (where it is today). Cancer rules, among other things, land and real estate, as well as home and family. Additionally, money maven Venus and expansive Jupiter, the two benefic planets, were in a one-degree conjunction in futuristic Aquarius, an alignment that is often deemed very fortuitous.

“Seward’s Folly? Alaska’s riches have proven its wisdom.” – Mark Twain

Beatles Paul McCartney and John Lennon, born on this day, daily astrology, determination, Mars enters Capricorn, On This Day in History, perseverance

Cosmic Weather:

““When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this – you haven’t.” – Inventor, Thomas Edison

The Red Planet Mars, symbolizing our motivation and actions, moves into persevering Capricorn today (9:58 am) where it will presumably buckle down until February 13th. Mars is in its exaltation in Saturn-ruled Capricorn suggesting that we are potentially more behaviorally equipped now, during this period, to temper our impulses in a more serious and determined manner in our ongoing quest to claim our (inevitable) sweet perch atop the mountain in 2024. 🙂

Mars in Capricorn is typically regarded as being highly ambitious, status-conscious, and results-driven, perennially keeping a steely eye on the big prize.

Too, Mars in Capricorn ideally helps us to manage our resources – including our valuable time – more effectively and strategically. Always a good thing.

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” –Charles Darwin

Some famous people with Mars in Capricorn include Albert Einstein, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Shakira.

*All times EST

Born On This Day: English physicist, mathematician and astronomer Isaac Newton (Gravity, Laws of Motion) in 1643 in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, England (d. 1727).

“Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion.” – Isaac Newton

On This Day in History: On January 4, 1865, the New York Stock Exchange opens for business in its first permanent headquarters on Broad St, near Wall Street, in NYC. The Exchange had formally existed since 1792 but had reportedly operated out of a series of packed Wall Street coffee-houses and rented offices. (gilderlehrman.org)

Astrologically, that day, Venus – which governs money as well as relationships – was in futuristic Aquarius and applying to an exact flowing trine to electrifying Uranus in Gemini, the astrological sign which rules our immediate locale or surroundings. Positive Venus-Uranus aspects are generally regarded as being more favorable for finance-related matters. Venus also governs beauty or aesthetics and connected with Uranus there may be a desire to modernize or update our environment in novel ways.

Too, this planetary duo is sometimes linked with sudden attractions. For instance, Paul McCartney and John Lennon reportedly met each other for the very first time when Venus and Uranus were conjunct in entertainment Leo. Their financial future together also appeared to work out pretty well! 🙂

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well.

Astrology December 31, 2023: Moon Enters Self-improvement Virgo

Cosmic Weather:

“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.” – Madonna

On this very last day of 2023, perhaps it is fitting that Waning Luna is shifting into perfecting Virgo (6:54 am), as many of us go about crafting/rolling out our well-meaning list of NYE intentions/resolutions for next year now, with self-improvement strategies likely nearing the top of that list.

(In fact, according to a recent October survey by Forbes, the most commonly selected new year’s resolution for 2024 among respondents was fitness. Also, 62% of respondents stated that they felt pressured to set a new year’s resolution.)

With the daily Moon transiting Virgo, we tend to focus on optimizing our resources, troubleshooting, tidying up, and being of service. Virgo can also be more health conscious.

Early this afternoon, Luna opposes minimalist, restrictive Saturn in Pisces (1:24 pm). While this influence is thought to impart a more exacting, less social vibe, it may be ideal for planning or decluttering as well as reflection.

Luna’s trine to expansive, jovial Jupiter in Taurus (6:10 pm) could be described as almost a polar opposite to the Moon-Saturn energy as it is perceived to be both upbeat and inclusive. The champagne glass is unequivocally half-full at this time!

“I believe when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade…and try to find someone whose life has given them vodka and have a party.” – Ron White

*All times EST

On This Day in History: US President Harry Truman signs Presidential Proclamation 2714, which officially declared the cessation of all hostilities in WWII.

Even though the actual combat of the war ended May 8, 1945, in Europe and September 2, 1945, in the Pacific, the state of war was not lifted off of Japan and Germany in order to give a reason for the necessity of occupation troops in these countries. Once the War Crime Trials were over, the hostilities were seen as over.

The signing of Presidential Proclamation 2714 is also the legal basis for the end of World War II. As a result, any person who served between December 7,1941 and December 31, 1946, is considered a World War II veteran. (Wikipedia)

Among the astrological aspects on 12/31/46: Mars, the planet of war, was just separating from an exact conjunction to the authoritative Sun in Capricorn, the sign of government. Mars was also exactly square to dissolving Neptune in Libra, the sign of peace and diplomacy. Mars square Neptune sometimes suggests an avoidance of direct confrontation, often due to weariness or tiredness. It may also signal passive-aggressive or deceptive/delusional behavior. Thought it was very interesting, though, that in this case, it was correlated with the formal recognition of the cessation of hostilities.  Mars is also thought to be exalted in Capricorn because its actions when in that sign are perceived to be more cautious, disciplined, and strategic.

Cosmic Weather:

“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” – Joseph Campbell

Today’s more penetrating Mars-Pluto sextile (exact at 8:18 pm) suggests that it may be easier now to align with our deepest desires as well as hidden motivations (Pluto signifies the subconscious) and, as a consequence, ideally be able to implement or manifest conditions around us that are more congruent with who we are at our core. Kind of like being able to adjust our radio dial to the exact frequency that we vibrate to so there is little to no interference.

Too, it may be an especially good time to engage ourselves with projects that we can get lost in for hours – in other words, that put us “in the zone” – because these types of all-encompassing activities tend to fully replenish our body, mind, and spirit. Mars-Pluto energy is widely perceived to equip us with a heightened ability to focus our time, attention, and resources.

“Always remember, your focus determines your reality.” – George Lucas

*All times EST

On This Day in History: On November 21, 1989, a law banning smoking on most domestic flights is signed by US President George H. Bush.

Astrologically, that day, action-oriented Mars was applying to a conjunction with Pluto in the transformational sign of Scorpio (an influence similar to what we have today). This planetary alignment is usually regarded as motivating us to tackle more consequential projects or undertakings often in a bid to dramatically reshape or alter the playing field around us. Mars was also nearly exactly sextile to a Neptune and Saturn conjunction in Saturn-ruled Capricorn. Dissolving Neptune rules, among other things, drugs and substance abuse issues, while ringed planet Saturn represents our ability to set limits or put restrictions around matters. Capricorn also rules government intervention.

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well.

“You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.” – Carl Gustav Jung

Cosmic Weather:

The authoritative Sun, symbolizing our ego and will, makes its annual conjunction with assertive Mars in investigative, transformational Scorpio today (12:42 am) potentially inspiring us to more confidently or courageously act upon or defend our deepest passions or ambitions while, at the same time, perhaps stoking our desire for employing new methods, new approaches, including embracing/welcoming new beginnings. Our adventurous streak is stronger now. Existing situations could also reach pivotal turning points.

Planetary conjunctions represent birthdays, of sorts. Fresh starts. To this end, Waxing Luna’s entrance into experimental Aquarius (6:28 am) also helps to support this more galvanizing, pioneering Sun-Mars energy.

While breakthroughs are possible – and perhaps more likely now – due, in part, to our potentially more determined, undaunted desire to go to the next level or see matters through to the very end, on the shadow side, we may also want to be more mindful of a tendency, at the moment, to go to extremes (the Scorpio energy), when perhaps a more nuanced approach might, ultimately, serve us better in the long run.

Too, proactively seeking to avoid engaging in more reactive behavior (such as throwing temper tantrums when something/someone provokes our ire) or taking measures to contain inflammable situations before they erupt or get out of hand may also go far to adding to the peace, stability, and success of the day. On the other hand, now may also be a healthy time to share/vent how we really feel about things in a bid to clear the air. This is also a good period for purging/repurposing items.

Additionally, now could be a litmus test to see how well we are using/abusing/wielding our personal power. We may also gain a fresh new understanding or awareness concerning what really excites us at our core/what truly makes us come alive.

“Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.” -Lao Tzu

On This Day in History:  On November 18, 1963, Bell Telephone introduces the touch-tone telephone to customers in Pennsylvania. (Before this new advance, we had the old-fashioned rotary dial telephone.)

Astrologically, that day, enterprising Mars, in futuristic Sagittarius, was exactly sextile to solidifying Saturn in innovative Aquarius an excellent influence for building upon the trusty structure of the past.

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well.
