Astrology May 25, 2011: “Possible Roadblocks” Mars Quinqunx Saturn

COSMIC WATCH:

“A bend in the road is not the end of the road, unless you fail to make the turn.” Author unknown

A few roadblocks or detours could be put in our path today with go-getter Mars (the accelerator pedal) and obstructionist Saturn (the brakes) meeting up via the quinqunx aspect. Sometimes this 150-degree “adjustment” influence also has us dealing with, or having to resolve, issues from our past (Saturn). Of course, a temporary cessation of forward motion, while sometimes aggravating, is not necessarily a bad thing, as it often gives us a chance to catch our breath.

Too, the Universe is sending us some helpful roadside assistance in the guise of the Sun’s opportunity sextile to innovative Uranus. Sun-Uranus is an empowering influence (Sun) for trying new approaches (Uranus) to old problems (Saturn). Hi-tech Uranus can provide us with sudden, bright ideas to help get us unstuck (Uranus governs our intuition). It is also a great influence for cultivating our own originality.

“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” Herman Melville

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Astrology May 24, 2011: “It’s All A Mirage” Moon Conjunct Neptune

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

COSMIC WATCH:

“Our knowledge is a receding mirage in an expanding desert of ignorance.” Will Durant

A couple days ago, we had the “illuminating” Sun in “talking head” Gemini exactly square “psychedelic” Neptune in “sinking ship” Pisces, and we were nestled in recovery mode on the bottom of Neptune’s fair, delusional sea, following the much ballyhooed doomsday prophecy that failed, once again, to materialize (Neptune). That ‘nebulous’ Sun-Neptune influence is still permeating the ether, but waning.

Today, we have a variant energy operating. The Moon is shifting into Neptune-ruled “fantasy” Pisces (8:24 am EDT) and conjuncting Neptune itself (10:11 am EDT), temporarily rekindling our rapturous desire to move beyond the boundaries and limitations of the material earth plane and magically connect with other realms, unseen forces. Befriending white rabbits, mystically cloaked in clouds, wistfully descending from starships originating from the likes of San Francisco, holds immense appeal for Alice and many others on this day. ๐Ÿ™‚

To add even more sentimental, surreal icing to the Haight-Ashbury cake today, we also have “thought-keeper” Mercury forming a cool, creative quintile to “coming to take us away” Neptune.

Famous Birthdays May 24th: Bob Dylan is turning 70 today. He has his natal Mercury (thoughts) exactly square to imaginative Neptune in workaholic Virgo, perhaps why he is such a good poet and songwriter (Neptune rules poetry and music).ย  Priscilla Presley is also 66. Fascinatingly, her Gemini Sun is exactly trine to fairy-tale Neptune in matrimonial Libra and, of course, she had that “glittery” (Neptune) marriage to Elvis, who also had his emotional Moon in “love me tender” Pisces.

In the News: On the heels of the Gemini Sun’s murky square to Neptune in Pisces and the Mercury in Taurus quinqunx to Saturn in “judicial” Libra, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled that the state of California could be forced to release thousands of prisoners early to reduce overcrowding, in an admonishment to states that if they want to get tough on crime, they must also provide sufficient prison funding. (From the Wall Street Journal)

With Mercury quinqunx Saturn, we often are censured or rebuked (Saturn) for our ideas (Mercury). In this case, the Libra-ruled Supreme Court was taking the states to task. The empowering Sun in reporter Gemini also flashed a bright spotlight (via the square aspect to Neptune in Pisces) on the problem of overcrowding in prisons (Pisces rules prisons and places of confinement).

Enjoy your Tuesday! Remember: feed your head!

Astrology May 23, 2011: “Make A Love Connection” Venus Conjunct Mars

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

COSMIC WATCH:

“The art of love…is largely the art of persistence.” Albert Ellis

Venus, goddess of love and beauty, is exactly conjunct desire lord Mars in earthy, pampering Taurus today, a potentially very romantic time when we may want to go ahead and try to make an intimate connection with “someone special.” Venus and Mars aligned tends to amplify our desires, making us want to seek out pleasurable activities with others that indulges our senses. It is also an excellent aspect for artistic creativity, especially since this pairing is occurring in talented Taurus, a sign which naturally makes it easier for us to give tangible expression or form to whatever is visualized in our mind’s eye. Gardening is also a favored activity today.

Also, the Moon continues her passage through friendly, civic-mindedย  Aquarius, additionally encouraging us to reach out and do for others and or espouse causes bigger than ourselves. Love could even blossom in connection with immersion in group matters.

Intellectual Mercury, governing our thinking, is also forming a 150-degree (quinqunx) aspect to cautionary Saturn in balancing Libra. This wavering Mercury-Saturn aspect could make us second guess or doubt ourselves at times, or suggest to us that we might be wise to adopt some back up strategies for our plans.

Enjoy your Monday!

Astrology May 22, 2011: “Feet Not On The Ground” Sun Square Neptune

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

COSMIC WATCH:

“Don’t part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.” Mark Twain

This insightful Mark Twain quote may be of some temporary consolation to us today as we grapple with the psychedelic impact of illusionist Neptune, in “permanently out to sea” Pisces, exactly square to the brightly lit Sun in “talk therapy” Gemini.

“Father, please forgive us in advance, for what we say and do today. We haven’t a clue. Amen.” ๐Ÿ™‚

Veiled, dissolving Neptune governs our urge for fantasy or escape. When its ray is activated, our feet seem to “not be on the ground.” We are wanting to flee the real world for “other realms,” including the world of our own, sometimes scary imagination, which Neptune presides over. With Sun-Neptune it is easier for us to be confused, bewildered, or bewitched.

Too, with this aspect, we are often unable to maintain healthy boundaries around us and we are more prone to letting in questionable elements that could serve to undermine us in some way. That is why we need to be a bit more wary of what is around us today and especially be on guard against deceptive (Neptune) forces. If something seems a little weird to us, chances are that it’s only the “tip of the iceberg” and we need to run immediately for cover. The thing is about Neptune’s pull, too, is that it often glamorizes things that are really not good for us (Neptune rules drugs and alcohol).

Of course, it is true that we still have the Moon in analytical Aquarius, which normally can help us to detach from our vulnerabilities and navigate things objectively, although the Moon is also pummeling the likes of “relationship” Venus (2:12 pm EDT), “defensive” Mars (2:46 pm EDT), and “logical” Mercury (5:53 pm EDT), making it potentially more challenging for us to relate to others logically and with a healthy sensitivity. Thankfully, though, the Moon will make a harmonious trine to “safe harbor” Saturn in “peace preserving” Libra by day’s end (7:01 pm EDT). And, not to be overlooked, Venus, Mars and Mercury are still in “rock solid” Taurus, also boding well for our prospects of being able to successfully parachute back “down to earth.”

Interestingly, cute Beatle, Paul McCartney, was born with his Sun in Gemini in his tenth house of career exactly square to dreamy Neptune in workhorse Virgo. Neptune is also exactly conjoined Paul’s Virgo Ascendant, with the Ascendant being the window in which one views the world. Paul is a perfect example of how to effectively channel Neptune’s more imaginative ray to one’s own advantage, by being able to fully immerse himself into the world of his own creativity and also become a billionaire in the process. Neptune also rules music.

Beyond that, Paul, and the Beatles, actually served as a conduit to facilitate much of the planet’s immersion into “Neptune’s whimsical realms”ย  through their floodgate ofย  music, thereby freeing us from the prosaic drone of our daily lives. They acted as a Neptunian narcotic, in many ways, enlisting us as Sgt. Pepper band members as a surefire way of escape (Neptune).

Paul also has his initiating, pioneering Mars tightly conjunct focused Pluto in entertainment Leo providing him with obsessive drive and natural-born desire for self-expression and showmanship (his Moon is also in Leo). Right now, we also have Mars, Venus and Mercury in tangible, artistic Taurus trining Pluto in ambitious Capricorn, somewhat of an equivalent form of energy here, in addition to the “magical, mystery tour” invitation of today’s Sun square Neptune.

Astrology May 21, 2011: “Chance To Deepen Ties” Venus Trine Pluto

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

COSMIC WATCH:

“Friendship is the golden thread that ties the heart of all the world.” John Evelyn

The empowering Sun exits “I have” Taurus and cascades into “I think” Gemini, shifting our core focus from an accumulation of things and a quest for security to an accumulation of knowledge (5:22 am EDT) and eager interaction with others. Restless Gemini is characterized by a “need to know” and also requires active participation in its environment via travel and communication. (The Sun will be in intellectual Gemini for the next month.)

Later on, we also have the Moon departing personally ambitious Capricorn for forward-thinking, detached Aquarius (10:32 pm EDT), another socially-minded air sign, like Gemini, in which attention is centered on group expression and collaborative efforts.

Goddess of love Venus, in pleasure-seeking Taurus, is additionally forming a potent, harmonious trine to passionate, renewing Pluto in Capricorn (2:01 pm EDT), potentially giving us the chance to deepen or strengthen (or heal) our relationship ties. Venus-Pluto often puts us in touch with our deepest desires (Pluto rules the subconscious) and helps to foster particularly strong emotional reactions to persons and events around us.

Often on Venus-Pluto days, we will be riveted by certain captivating stories that we hear about in the news regarding relationships and romance. Or, even Venus-ruled artists or entertainers may capture our attention in a special or singular way. Lady Gaga, for instance, racked up, I believe, 7 or 8 Grammy Awards one night, when Venus and Pluto were exactly aligned in the sky, effectively “stealing the show.”

Too, sometimes old lovers from our past, including our karmic past, appear under this same aspect. It is an influence that is linked with finding our soulmate.ย  (Pluto rules death and rebirth).

This same aspect also favors going treasure-hunting. I recently “fell in love” with, and ended up purchasing, a fabulous pinkish, salmon-colored, upholstered chair at a tag sale the day Venus and Pluto were exactly aligned in my horoscope (Venus rules art and other objects of beauty). As soon as I set my eyes on the chair, I was “overpowered” (Venus-Pluto) by it, and simply had to have it. Venus-Pluto is also associated with “obsession” or “intense craving.” This aspect is also excellent for personal creativity.

Enjoy your Saturday! I’ll let you know how I make out on the antiques trail!

Astrology May 20, 2011: “Move Mountains” Mercury and Mars Trine Pluto

COSMIC WATCH:

“We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.” Sonia Johnson

Big, big day today! The Moon is in personally ambitious Capricorn the Goat. Mercury (thoughts) and Mars (action) are exactly conjunct in determined, materialistic Taurus the Bull. Both are also trining intense Pluto (transformation agent) in resourceful Capricorn. We are able to think and act decisively (Mercury-Mars), leveraging a laserlike mental focus (Mercury-Pluto) and unwavering resolve (Mars in Taurus) to miraculously move mountains (Mars-Pluto) and end up smack at the very top (Capricorn).

We also have x-ray vision (Mercury-Pluto) and can masterfully detect what was previously hidden to us, making this a potent day for problem-solving, or for figuring out previous, elusive mysteries. (On more of a collective level, it’s a good time for Pluto-ruled spying and espionage.)

This is definitely a day when we will want to stay fully engaged and not take our eyes off our targeted goals. We also have the chance to rally influential persons (Pluto) to our cause to back us or assist us, i.e. a fabulous time for “power networking.”

On another level, with mighty Pluto’s “purging ray” activated, now is an ideal period to eliminate or get rid of deadweight, or whatever is not working for us. Mysterious Pluto likes to travel with as little baggage as possible, and often in incognito. We are, therefore, well-served to do the same. Be perhaps a little “mum” to the world about all of our action plans until the last minute. Discuss our power-brokering strategies in private, “closed-door chambers.”

In The News: I have taken a quick peek at Maria Shriver‘s and Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s horoscopes. The Scorpio Full Moon on Tuesday fascinatingly fell exactly on Maria’s 7th house of marriage at 26 degrees Scorpio, putting a bright spotlight on both her marriage and the marriage partner. With “revealing” Pluto ruling Scorpio, too, we are often privy to finding out “secret” or “hidden” information.

Arnold, meanwhile, had the Full Moon in Scorpio falling exactly in his fifth house of children, near his expansive Jupiter, setting the stage for the world to learn that he had more (Jupiter) offspring than what was originally known about him publicly. It was also on the exact day of the Full Moon in Scorpio on Tuesday that Arnold finally “came clean” about his past and his secret love child. Scorpio also rules sex and intimate affairs.

Too, for the last few days, we have been hearing about the “high-profile” alleged sexual assault case involving Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former head of the International Monetary Fund, details of which first emerged just prior to the “revelatory” Scorpio Full Moon.

Astrology May 19, 2011: “Dull Boy Jack” and Moon Trine Jupiter

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

COSMIC WATCH:

“Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.” Mark Twain

This may be a good morning to crack the one-liners at the office, as we have the Moon in ‘fun-loving” Sagittarius trining Jupiter in spontaneous Aries (10:18 am EDT), with jolly Jupiter steward of the title, “the cosmic king of comedy.” Jupiter presides over our sense of humor, or ability to include some levity into our perspective.

This is also an excellent period to self-promote, self-publish, and or expand upon our brilliant philosophy (Jupiter) of life with anyone who will listen to us.

Later in the day, when the Moon shifts into serious, “all work, no play” Capricorn (4:17 pm EDT), it may be harder for us to casually laugh or philosophize our troubles away, especially for “dull boy” Jack. Although the Capricorn Moon’s sextile to imaginative Neptune in “tipsy” Pisces (5:48 pm EDT) can help to get our creative juices flowing again, especially when Jack meets up with Mr. Daniels at the water cooler. ๐Ÿ™‚

We also may have to subdue an inner rebellious streak when the traditionalist Capricorn Moon squares off with “non-conforming,” lone maverick Uranus (10:31 pm EDT), defiantly thumbing for a ride on the “wild west” Aries’ prairie.

Hope it’s a good one!

Astrology May 18, 2011: “Taking A Gamble” Moon In Sagittarius

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

COSMIC WATCH:

“The safest way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your pocket.” Kin Hubbard

Even though we have the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars all in practical, conservative Taurus, some of us may be willing to take a bit more of a gamble today with our resources. Or, at least muse ourselves about something a little “pie in the sky.” This is primarily due to the placement of the Moon in “reach for the stars” Sagittarius.

Egging the Moon on in the risk-tolerant department today, too, is mental Mercury’s positive semi-sextile to wacky, but possibly “brilliant idea guru” Uranus in “new day” Aries (Uranus also rules our hunches and intuition). Of course, it is conceivable that we could, indeed, come up with some game-changing strategy that could end up putting some extra jingle (Taurus) in our pocket.

Also, love maven Venus is making the very same 30-degree aspect to “wild thing” Uranus. This could lead to our giving keen consideration today to the delicious idea of absconding with the cute, produce guy at the local grocery store. ๐Ÿ™‚ Venus-Uranus can spawn sudden infatuations, often with types we are normally not attracted to. In general with this aspect, it’s a favorable time for partaking in leisure activities (Venus-ruled) that are refreshingly different (Uranus). Even dressing a little bolder or daring today might give us a big emotional lift.

Do you get a boost when you wear certain kinds or colors of clothing, shoes, or maybe style your hair differently? The late Elizabeth Taylor had her Venus (ruling beauty) exactly conjunct her Uranus in bold Aries and most of us always felt magically enamored (Uranus) by her singular presence on the silver screen. Also, the late Johnny Cash (born just a day apart from Elizabeth) always called attention to himself by dressing only in black. Johnny, who also had his Venus conjunct Uranus, was officially known as “the man in black.” Miss them both.

One other noteworthy thing here about Uranus and fashion: The moment that Kate Middleton stepped out of the limousine at her wedding in April, unveiling her wedding gown to the world for the very first time, Uranus was exactly trining the “royal” Leo Ascendant, indicating something “electrifying” was unfolding then on the horizon (Uranus is likened to a thunderous bolt of lightning out of the blue). Of course, the matter of Kate’s wedding gown, and who designed it, had been the “best kept secret in the world,” for several months.

Enjoy your Wednesday.

Astrology May 15, 2011: Venus And Mercury Enter Faithful Taurus

Tags

“God does not begin by asking our ability, only our availability, and if we prove our dependability, He will increase our capability.” Neal A. Maxwell

Interesting mix of energies today. The Moon shifts out of “social butterfly” Libra for “I spy” Scorpio (12:33 pm EDT), giving all of us a chance to play detective.

Venus, goddess of love and beauty, also leaves “freedom-loving” Aries and flits into “possessive” Taurus (6:12 pm EDT), where she’s all about commitment and insisting that we be faithful to her. “Till death do us part” is entirely non-negotiable to Venus in Taurus. She will stay in this sign until June 9th.

Mental Mercury, governing our cognitive power, also shifts into “deliberate, slower-thinking” Taurus (7:19 pm EDT), and the following phrase begins to catch on like wildfire: “Would you please repeat that to me again, till the impact of what you’re saying sinks into the crevices of my tender brain, and I finally get it?” (Yours truly also has her Mercury in “out to pasteur” Taurus. Can you tell?) Mercury grazes in Taurus the Bull until June 2nd.

With the Moon’s changeover from Libra to Scorpio today, and Mercury and Venus going from Aries to Taurus, we now have five planets in immovable, fixed signs, including four of them in steady, leisurely Taurus. We are less eager to start new things (nomadic Aries) and more interested in building up our base of operations and creating a sense of permanence and stability in our lives.

Astrology May 17, 2011: Full Moon in “Hidden” Scorpio

Tags

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

“Life has its own hidden forces which you can only discover by living.” Soren Kierkegaard

There’s a Full Moon at 26 degrees of Scorpio today (7:10 am EDT). Briefly, a Full Moon represents a culmination or peaking of awareness. With a Full Moon we are often more privy to revelations, as we have “more light” by which to see things. The volume on our emotional responses (Moon) may also be turned up.

Scorpio, as a quality of experience, is associated with intensity of expression, and also extremes of behavior. It is a more complex sign to figure out. The natural ruler of Scorpio is Pluto, which is known for its’ laser-like focus. When the Moon is in Scorpio, there is a greater depth of feeling and passion to us, and consequently we tend to react more powerfully to matters. Unfortunately, emotional outbursts can also manifest, if we are not careful to rein ourselves in. The Scorpio Moon additionally likes power and to be in charge, which means on the shadow side, we often need to simultaneously subdue our feelings of control or manipulation. Jealousy and possessiveness are also two other issues that many of us characteristically wrestle with when the Moon is deposited here.

Scorpio as a zodiacal sign stands guard over those areas of life that are normally hidden from view, such as our mind’s subconscious. It also governs intimacy and sex, or what is often expressed privately “behind closed doors.” Scorpio, as the opposite sign to money and possession Taurus, additionally depicts our attitudes concerning the sharing of our material resources with others, and is related to such mundane things as joint bank accounts and jointly-held possessions.

Since Scorpio presides over death (or the dissolution of form) and rebirth, it is also connected to insurance and estate matters. It also rules taxes, surgery, and regenerative healing techniques. Scorpio is furthermore linked to psychic development, channeling, and the spirit world, and to metaphysical matters in general. Its intrinsic approach is always to “go deep” and ponder mysteries wherever they may be found.

With the Full Moon falling in Scorpio, it could be that some or many of the areas above may be more highlighted now. We are also more likely to be in touch with our deepest, most passionate desires (Scorpio) or innermost feelings at this time. We may also have to address issues from our buried past (with Scorpio they often suddenly rise to the surface). Or possibly face the truth about things that we have been avoiding. Again, too, the Scorpio Full Moon can easily solicit overreactions from us, especially if we are not mindful of our behavior.

Too, the Full Moon now could mark transitions or endings, or pivotal turning points (Scorpio). This Scorpio Full Moon is also making a challenging square to vague, dissolving Neptune in surrendering Pisces. It is additionally forming a tight quinqunx (adjustment aspect) to excessive, boastful Jupiter in impulsive Aries (sign of the military), cautioning us not to go overboard or gamble unwisely with our resources. Also, with Neptune’s “veiled ray” on the scene, we may need to guard against being hoodwinked or misled by others. We also would be wise, ourselves, to avoid doing anything that is nefarious or deceitful. Sometimes, too, with Neptune, we unwittingly lead others on by not being in full possession of all the facts. We simply spew out misinformation or just perceive things in a distorted way.

On a more positive note, this lunation still finds Mercury (thoughts) and Venus (beauty and love) side by side in gentle, laid-back Taurus, a very creative sign, and both in a harmonious, compassionate sextile to imaginative Neptune. Taking the time to put into words, our deep love and affection for each other, and engaging in random acts of love and kindness (Neptune), can have very uplifting consequences for all of us now. Also, this aspect is excellent for creating or purchasing art or other objects of beauty, including adding a few “to die for” items to our wardrobe. Too, with the rejuvenating properties of the Scorpio Moon also involved, now would be an ideal time for age-defying beauty treatments or makeovers. Neptune also rules cosmetics, and all manner of masquerade and disguises. It is interesting, too, how when we do alter our outward appearance, we often are related to differently.ย  In other words, it sets the stage for transforming responses from others.

“Men and women belong to different species, and communication between them is a science still in its infancy.” Bill Cosby ๐Ÿ™‚

BTW, I read the other day that Oprah Winfrey (who has facilitated many personal makeovers through her show) plans to tape her talks shows for airing May 23rd and May 24th, on May 17th, at a special arena in Chicago, which will be able to hold over 20,000 of her fans. As an astrologer, of course, I immediately thought about the intensely emotional Scorpio Full Moon in affect and its fitting tie-in with poignant, transforming events, including farewells (endings). Too, with Mercury conjunct Venus in Taurus sextile idealistic, otherworldly Neptune (Neptune also rules the television camera), no doubt that Oprah will be magically “feeling the love” then from her audience and also the camera will be able to masterfully capturing the surreal (Neptune) images of this singular event.

As most of us know who faithfully watch Oprah, she is signing off with her daily syndicated talk show on May 25th, after being on the air for 25 years. She will still be actively involved with broadcasting, however, running her OWN network. Oprah has “Karma Lord” Saturn in Libra transiting at the very top of her chart now, near her tenth house of career. Often a time when one’s highest professional achievement is recorded.

Too, on May 25th, again the last day for the Oprah Show, the Sun will also fascinatingly be in communications Gemini and exactly sextile to futuristic Uranus in new beginnings Aries, signaling that some “big change is in the air.” Uranus also rules television broadcasting. The Sun-Uranus aspect also tends to coincide with more “unusual” or “out of the ordinary” (Uranus) events, and May 25th will, no doubt, go down in broadcast history as the day Oprah officially ended her talk show.ย  The Moon will also be in reflective, sentimental Pisces that day. We wish Oprah all the best, but at the same time, we will miss her daily show. Afternoons will no longer be the same without her beaming, re-assuring presence lighting up the television screen.
