“Wisely, and slow.  They stumble that run fast.” William Shakespeare

Some jeweled wisdom there that we’d be well-served to embrace this very day as the Moon enters leisurely Taurus (2:48 am EDT). The slower moving Taurus Moon has a way of soothing our weary soul now, giving it peaceful refuge.

The Moon also connects harmoniously to Mercury adding some measure of safety and stability to our thinking and ideas.

The Moon also reaches out to healing Pluto.  Pluto’s activated ray is able to permeate our physical being, intimately renewing our life force all the way down to the cellular level. A good day to go for a massage. Or to move about in water.

Event in history on this date:

On May 12, 1963 Bob Dylan (born May 24, 1941) was suppose to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show but instead walked off the set when network censors at the last minute would not let him sing the song that he had been earlier cleared to perform. The song that generated all the ruckus was Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues a satirical take on the ultra-conservative John Birch Society.

While Bob Dylan had a niche following at the time, this appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, the highest-rated variety show in America then, would clearly have been a big door-opener for his career.  Yet, he turned it down.

So, what in the heck did he have in his stars that day that gave him the wherewithal to just walk away?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SORHYGlT-4s

Fascinatingly, Dylan had transiting Mars (combative) in Leo, the sign of entertainment, exactly square to his natal Saturn in Taurus (stubborn) in his fifth house of self-expression and personal creativity.

Mars square Saturn is one of those classic astrological aspects when we tend to bump heads with authority figures.  Mars rules our aggressive urge and speaks to us of our passions.  Saturn meanwhile represents the status quo and the tried and true establishment.  Saturn tries to curtail what we are passionate about (Mars) and puts all manner of restrictions around us. Dylan wasn’t going to have any of it.  Dylan’s horoscope indicates he has a tendency to be extremely stubborn and set in his ways with four planets conjoined in the fixed sign of Taurus and all in his fifth house of talents.

As destiny would have it, Dylan’s principled stand was probably the best strategy he could have ever taken for his career as all the publicity from his walking off the set got him noticed in a big way.  Also helping out here, transiting Saturn in individualistic Aquarius was harmoniously trine to his Mercury shortly after the Ed Sullivan controversy.  Saturn favorable to Mercury gives us firm, supportive footing for expressing our ideas.

Enjoy your Wednesday.  Keep that Shakespeare quote in mind.

“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” Peter F. Drucker

I believe that quote eloquently summarizes what we have just been through with Thought-Keeper Mercury retrograde in Taurus the last three weeks. We should have used this retrograde period to wisely reflect upon our previous thoughts and ideas. Now with Mercury stationing direct today we are poised to move forward again and, as Peter Drucker says, take even more “effective action.”

Too, we may want to give Mercury a few days to get back to full speed before proceeding full throttle with our ideas, as it is still a little dizzy and disoriented from all the backward motion.

The Moon continues in restless, self-discovery Aries. Wonderful springtime energy. With Aries, we intrinsically feel the joy of being alive. We’re also like little children alone in a candy store.  I don’t know about you, but I really felt the Aries energy yesterday. I also suddenly thought of a new personal venture for myself.

Let’s all continue to tap into this pioneering Aries energy today and see what new things we can come up with in the way of re-birthing ourselves. Then we can put all these insights and discoveries into action towards the end of the week.

“The vision must be followed by the venture.  It is not enough to stare up the steps – we must step up the stairs.”  Vance Havner.

Celebrity News:

The unstoppable, lovable actress and comedian, Betty White, born under the earthy sign of Capricorn, scored another big one on SNL last week with some measure of help from the stars.  For her SNL debut, trailblazer Mars in entertaining Leo was  exactly conjunct her Neptune, which sits right on her warm and outgoing Leo Ascendant.

Neptune governs our personal mystique and charisma, as Neptune is the ruler of illusion. When it is conjoined energizer Mars it can signify a peaking of all that is magical and charismatic about us.

Yes, all of us are more captivated than ever now with Betty and thoroughly under her spell.  Neptune also makes us feel dreamy and otherwordly and you can bet that Betty is feeling like she is in seventh heaven about now.  She’s a treasure.

Enjoy your Aries Moon Tuesday.

“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” Albert Einstein.

Wow! Pretty heavy stuff…

And, some fine food for thought, as we get ready to swing into high gear and begin all over again with the energies and trappings of a new week shouting out to us. We have an irrepressible Aries Moon ready to greet us today and, boy oh boy, this one is clamoring for us to take some kind of action.  And, we best be quick about it! The whole world is waiting for us to get out of the corral. Hurry, hurry.

This Aries Moon is manically impatient and restless because liberator Uranus is pounding on her back door, begging to get in.

We also still have the very cool and playful, how about a spring fling, Venus in Gemini and Mars in Leo romantic sextile energy firing up our passions.  We’re even more in a lovestruck mood now that the Moon is back in a flirtatious fire sign.

The biggest fly in the ointment here is probably Thought-Keeper Mercury retrograde in sluggish Taurus.  Golly, Miss Molly!  But, Mercury is finally freed from the contact paper tomorrow at 6:27 pm EDT.  That is really when we can begin to resume warp speed with our thinking and ideas and pick up our flyswatters.

Event in history on this day:

On May 10, 1994 Barbra Streisand began her first concert tour in 30 years.

Barbra, a Taurus (born 4/24/42), had at that time in her horoscope, personally freeing Uranus exactly conjoined her 11th house cusp in the professional sign of Capricorn.  The 11th house represents our fans and audience.

With liberator and change-agent Uranus sitting right there on that 11th house, I believe she was psychologically feeling a certain breakthrough freedom then. Correspondingly, she probably really needed and wanted very much to perform in public again, as if to maybe prove to herself again, as well as to her fans, that she could do it. Uranus is all about daring and shattering self-imposed limitations that are holding us back.

Also, Uranus was simultaneously forming a magnificent grand earth trine (indicating material success) in her horoscope to her natal Saturn and Uranus conjunction in Taurus in her money house and also to her Neptune in Virgo in her sixth house of work.

The grand trine is like the cream of the crop in terms of serving up to us our positive, rewarding karma. It represents a very harmonious flow of energies. Neptune also rules music and the sign Taurus rules the voice.  Too, Pluto’s transforming ray was all over the place in her horoscope then, so it was a very historic (Pluto) time for her.

Barbra has her natal Moon, ruling her emotions, in the entertaining and proud sign of Leo. While part of her emotionally does love being the center of attention (Leo), there is also a deep part of her that longs to be very private and hidden from view, as her Moon is conjoined secretive Pluto, the little guy we were talking about just a moment ago.  Pluto’s legacy to date is that of a hermit.

Additionally, Barbra’s Venus, showing what she loves and values, is in creative and romantic Pisces and sequestered in the behind the scenes Pisces 12th house, which indicates she values her privacy and that she prefers to be alone with her musical gifts and creativity.  Plus, have you seen her husband James Brolin?  She has no reason to ever leave home.  She’d be out of her mind to leave him just to go on the road and sing a few songs.

We love you, Barbra!

“Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

The ever-changing Moon fittingly begins this Mother’s day in the selfless sign of Pisces. No doubt she’s hoping we’ll be likewise inspired by the altruistic qualities of this sign to demonstrate a gentle mothering and caring to others, especially to those more fragile persons around us who are suffering or in crisis.

Practicing compassion not only makes others happy, it is also a way to make ourselves feel better. In Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, our hearts are always bigger. Our vision more divine.

We may experience contradictory waves of emotion as the sensitive Pisces Moon conjoins joyous Jupiter, opposes anxious Saturn and then conjuncts rebellious Uranus mid-afternoon. Immersion into some kind of creative project may be a good way to productively channel these variegated feelings.

The Moon enters adventurous Aries at 5:29 pm EDT at which time the energy becomes much more frenetic and outward. We’re ready to ramp up our engines and start all over again then.

Events in history on this date: On May 9, 2005 The Huffington Post was launched by Arianna Huffington (Cancer) and two others as a more liberal-progressive American news website and aggregated blog.

This very popular site reportedly receives 18 or 19 million visits a month, however, that number is a fluctuating estimate.  What is also noteworthy here is that they’re registering more than a million comments each month from their countless stream of articles.

Too, while HuffPost is known for its focus on politics, it has successfully expanded into other areas including business, entertainment and sports.

On the launch date, we find the Sun in consolidating Taurus making a positive sustaining sextile to longevity Saturn in nurturing Cancer. The Sun position in a horoscope is always very important as it depicts the life force in the chart in which everything else revolves.  We always want to have a strong Sun placement as it provides vitality and spirit for a being or enterprise.

Here in materialistic Taurus, the Sun is practically grounded and the link to utilitarian, survivalist Saturn endows it with an intrinsic understanding of how to use all the resources at its disposal.

The Sun is also in a close, more challenging square to idealistic Neptune in Aquarius, the sign of the collective.  The dreamy Neptune influence acts as an antidote, in some ways, to the more cautious, conservative Sun-Saturn energy.

Sun-Neptune is goaded into action more by a sense of vision and lofty ideals and less by practical considerations, especially with Neptune being in the sign of brotherly love Aquarius. Sun-Neptune intrinsically seeks to inspire and enlighten others. There can particularly be a strong need to want to be a voice for persons or groups who are disenfranchised.

A lot of political leaders, including U.S. Presidents, have had Sun-Neptune prominent in their charts, as it seems to install some measure of a “Messiah-complex” with Neptune symbolically representing our link to the Divine.

Neptune also governs visual images as well as charisma.  Sun-Neptune energy often denotes figures or entities that engage us or captivate us in some magical way.  Neptune is the purveyor of illusion.  It also rules glamor, disguise and hopeless addiction. The Huffington Post is a master when it comes to leveraging visual imagery along with written content, another reason why so many maybe have become hooked on the blog. Lucky Jupiter’s placement in social Libra also adds to the successful public appeal of it.

The emotional Moon was also in the communication sign of Gemini at its inception, giving a natural communication ease as well as bestowing a deep need for interacting and articulating with the environment.

Pioneering Mars was also powerfully conjoined with innovative, trend-setter Uranus in Pisces on the launch day. Pisces is the sign that the very imaginative Neptune rules.  This influence attests to brilliance and genius and confers marked ability for a farsighted strategy that is able to project well into the future.

With Mars-Uranus in the Huffington Post horoscope there is also an unbridled passion for discovering new horizons as well as an aptitude for altering, updating existing environments. Uranus is furthermore the technology guru and with energetic Mars conjunct it, there would be easy access and talent for all things technological.

Also on that day, communicator Mercury, the purveyor of news and information, was in adventurous Aries, powerfully aspected (trined) to investigative Pluto in Sagittarius, the sign of publishing and journalism. Pluto denotes depth and all things hidden. Under Pluto’s ray, and aligned with Mercury, we  go deep into our thoughts.  We experience depth perception.

Pluto also represents power, control and transformation. Together with Mercury, we very much want to control and transform others (Pluto rules the masses) through our ideas (Mercury). We strive very hard to have our words unleash a powerful punch so as to have maximum impact.

Pluto also represents ”historic firsts.”  Mercury-Pluto days are often times when we hear about “history-making” events that alter the consciousness of the masses.  So it is not surprising that the Huffington Post has had a history shaping impact on the collective.

Mercury-Pluto is really an ideal aspect to have in a news-oriented horoscope as it is indicative of always trying to get the big scoop, always striving to get to the bottom of things.  This is because it is fueled by an obsessive, insatiable passion for uncovering what lies at the essence of every matter.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Happy Mother’s Day!

And, Happy Fifth Birthday to the Huffington Post!

“He is not a lover who does not love forever.” Euripides.

The warm blend of feminine (Venus) and masculine (Mars) energies continues today, courtesy of the Universe, and surely a welcome reprieve from the other, ongoing, heavier cosmic vibrations.

Venus shows us what we value and appreciate and what we seek to attract to us in our lives.  Venus also signifies our need for comforting connections or relationships.

Mars, the energy planet, is the keeper of our intimate sexual desires and speaks valiantly to us about our most heated passions.

The seductive sextile alignment of these two forces prompts us to want to assertively seek out those more amorous experiences that invigorate every layer of our physical being.

The fantasy-prone Pisces Moon sets the perfect backdrop for all this drama to unfold.

“I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning (Pisces).

Celebrity News: Did you happen to see Oprah Winfrey’s TV show yesterday, a special celebration of ten years of her magazine that was broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York city?

On the show, Dr. Phil McGraw shaved off his trademark moustache that he has been sporting for some 40 years. He said he did it because he has always been telling people that they have to be willing to change something and that he wanted to walk his talk, so he changed his appearance.

I’m personally not sure if I like him better clean-shaven or not.  What about you?

Of course, being an astrologer, I had to check out Dr. Phil’s horoscope (born 9/1/50) to see if there existed any type of cosmic corollary to match the physical denudement.  The results were rather fascinating.

For the last few days, Dr. Phil, an analytical Virgo (perfect sign for a psychologist), has had the transiting Mars in theatrical Leo exactly square to his natal Mars in transforming Scorpio.  Mars is the planet of action, and normally when we have Mars aspects, especially to our birth chart Mars, we are more predisposed to act out and often in bold ways.  We do things on impulse that we may not normally do, especially with the square aspect, which is more of a challenging influence.

With his natal Mars in the fixed sign of Scorpio, Dr. Phil is normally inclined to execute new moves in his life only after a good measure of careful strategy and planning. The Mars meet-up this week with his natal Mars may have provided him with a sudden impetus to want to change or transform himself (Scorpio) and also gave him the guts and courage to do so.

We have to figure  though, too, that with his shrewd Scorpio Mars, that he also calculated in advance that shaving off his moustache would get both him and Oprah a lot of publicity and consequently be good entertainment (Mars in Leo) and positive for the TV ratings. Mars in Scorpio always covers all its bases. (Oprah also has Mars in Scorpio.)

Venus rules physical appearance and beauty. Yesterday when Dr. Phil had the moustache removed transiting Venus was exactly harmoniously trine his natal Neptune in Libra.  Transiting Mars was also favorably sextiling his Neptune, so he had a double whammy of Neptunian energy going on. Neptune also is the ruler of his Pisces Ascendant which additionally governs outward appearance.

Neptune, as the higher octave of Venus, presides over visual images and illusion.  It rules all forms of theater and manner of disguise (a moustache could be perceived as a disguise). Neptune also rules TV cameras.

So, with the Venus and Mars energy prodding Neptune along, we saw the public unveiling (Libra) before the Neptunian television camera of a new Dr. Phil, a new clean-shaven Venusian form (Mars rules shaving).  Gone was the facial costume. Neptune whimsically lifting the curtain of illusion, so we could all peer in.

“Soul meets soul on lover’s lips.” Percy Bysshe Shelly

The Moon in Pisces heightens our sensitivity and puts the spotlight on our feelings and compassion. Our romantic fantasies may also turn into reality as relationship Venus sextiles passionate Mars. This is a great influence for meeting new people and also for creative and artistic projects. Both of these influences permeate the weekend.

Venus harmonious to Mars can also help to smooth over tensions in existing relationships while the Pisces Moon adds an extra measure of soothing healing and nurturing.

On a collective level, with Pisces ruling both the sea and oil, the Moon’s entrance here may also magnify our focus on the precarious situation in the Gulf of Mexico.

In the News:

Wall Street suffered its biggest ever intraday drop yesterday falling 998.5 points!  In one ten minute stretch, the Dow slid nearly 700 points.  While it is still unclear what happened here, a trading glitch is suspected.

The Wall Street sell-off also came in the wake of mounting fears of debt defaults in Europe.

Astrologically, we still have Mercury retrograde in the financial sign of Taurus, which would represent the suspected trading irregularity.

Also the last few days, the transiting Sun in Taurus has been making an exact square to volatile Mars.  The Sun-Mars influence, while it only lasts about a week, can have a major impact while it’s in play. Mars often ignites or triggers new events, usually of an unsteady nature.

Mars is the Lord of War and symbolizes the aggressive urge. As a byproduct of this, Mars’s activated ray is often associated with panic, dissension and violence.  Of course, we have seen this playing out in Greece this week.

“Fear tends to manifest itself much more quickly than greed, so volatile markets tend to be on the downside.  In up markets, volatility tends to gradually decline.” Philip Roth

“There is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can circumvent or hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul.” Ella Wheeler Wilcox

We shape our reality with our thinking.  We also give away our power when we feel that outside forces are more powerful than we are.

With the Moon entrenched in detached, analytical Aquarius, it’s a good day to take the temperature of our thinking and to reflect upon the kinds of ideas that we are putting inside our heads, particularly the ideas about ourselves and our own capabilities.

Perhaps we have too many recycled, fear-based thoughts and not enough empowering thoughts of what we can do.

Maybe we are afraid to try new things because we are scared of ridicule or rejection.

Aquarius is about freeing ourselves from self-limiting beliefs and ideas. It is about going beyond the herd mentality and cultivating the power of our own original thinking.

Often the simple act of brainstorming or talking over ideas with friends can help us to see things in a new light.

“Should we all confess our sins to one another we would all laugh at one another for our lack of originality.” Kahlil Gibran.

A painting by Picasso “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” sold for $106.5 million last night at Christie’s, setting a record as the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at an auction.  Picasso reportedly painted the picture in one day.

What I thought was most notable here astrologically in the horoscope for the auction: The transiting Sun in Taurus exactly square pioneering Mars in Leo.  Taurus rules money and possessions and Mars in Leo represents creative endeavors.  Mars is adventurous and often denotes “firsts” while the square “forces action,” often impulsive action.

With the Sun in the possession sign of Taurus, aligned with risk-taker Mars in creative Leo, there was “more of a mindset” to spend a record amount of money for creative, original artwork.

We also still have Mercury in acquisition Taurus separating from a trine to history-making Pluto in Capricorn, which is a very status-conscious sign.  Of course, owning a Picasso is definitely something of a status symbol.

Transiting Uranus is also at the last degree of Pisces, the sign of the zodiac which rules paintings and artwork. The nature of Uranus is unpredictable and Uranus more often than not ushers in new trends.

Uranus also equates to genius. Positioned at the end of Pisces, as it is now, could it be that Uranus is symbolically paying special homage to one of the most talented, genius artists who ever lived?

Just a thought.

I always regard planets at the end of the signs as having special significance for the collective, usually in a very spiritual and transforming way.

Picasso himself was a transforming figure born under Scorpio.  He also had four planets and Chiron in Taurus in his tenth house of career.  Taurus, ruled by beauty-loving Venus, can be very artistic and talented at creating objects of beauty.

Presently, both transiting Uranus and Neptune are exactly aspecting Picasso’s Pluto in Taurus in his career house.  Pluto rules death and rebirth and is associated with historic precedents – even from beyond the grave.

Also very interesting here, Picasso’s birth chart Pluto was at 29 degrees of Taurus, maybe signaling from the start that he was going to have a huge impact with his artwork on the collective (Pluto rules the masses).  This is again riding on the theory that planets at end degrees have special potency and meaning, reflecting a full maturation of what is originally intended with the sign. Taurus signifying artistic prowess.

Neptune, as ruler of Pisces (and the higher octave of Venus-ruled Taurus) , is also associated with art and paintings.  Neptune, too, interestingly enough, is exactly conjunct Picasso’s 8th house of death now.  This house also pertains to matters of his estate.  Suffice it to say, the beneficiaries to Picasso’s estate are very happy today that Neptune is there, don’t you think? Neptune on the regenerating 8th house, the rich legacy of his painting continues and reaches a new level on the material plane.

“We spend our time searching for security and hate it when we get it.” John Steinbeck.

The Moon’s foray through innovative Aquarius give us an itch to defy convention and try something new, even if it puts some of our security at risk.

The lingering Sun square Mars energy is also suggesting to us that we may want to move outside our comfort zone and expose ourselves to new circumstances.

While the idea of change can be daunting, it can also be empowering.  Sometimes incorporating change into our lives in the form of baby steps is the wisest course of action, until we get more familiar with stepping outside our world.

“All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.” Anatole France.

Often changing our lives for the long-term is simply a matter of changing our daily habits.  We are, after all, essentially what we do every day.

As change agent Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, gets ready to enter Aries, the sign of personal new beginnings, we may want to start thinking about phasing in new habits into our lives.

It usually is most effective if we begin by implementing only one new habit at a time and giving it time to gel.  Usually a 30-day period is what is needed.

It’s best to write down on a piece of paper our reasons, motivations, and strategies for making changes as well as keeping a daily log or journal of our progress.  We also need to remember to reward ourselves for our successes along the way.

“Expelled from individual consciousness by the rush of change, history finds its revenge by stamping the collective unconsciousness with habits and values.” Arthur M. Schlesinger.

In the News:

A painting by Picasso “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” sold for $106.5 million last night at Christie’s, setting a record as the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at an auction.  Picasso reportedly painted the picture in one day.

What I thought was most notable here astrologically: The transiting Sun in Taurus exactly square pioneering Mars in Leo.  Taurus rules money and possessions and Mars in Leo represents creative endeavors.  Mars is adventurous and often denotes “firsts” while the square “forces action.”

With the Sun in the possession sign of Taurus, aligned with risk-taker Mars in creative Leo, there was “more of a mindset” to spend a record amount of money for the artwork.

We also still have Mercury in acquisition Taurus separating from a trine to history-making Pluto Capricorn, which is a very status-conscious sign.  Of course, owning a Picasso is something of status.

Auden on impatience, Quote on limitations by Richard Bach, restless energy, Sun square Mars, zodiac, zodiac signs

“Perhaps there is only one cardinal sin: impatience.  Because of impatience we were driven out of Paradise, because of impatience we cannot return.” W.H. Auden

With the Sun square Mars, we’re possibly feeling more pressured and are more prone to acting on impulse rather than thought. That strategy can be risky and self-sabotaging, especially today when we can easily get in over our head.

It may be far wiser for us to take some time and gather our thoughts and put our minds at ease before acting. Sometimes, too, it’s better to let things play out.

We also want to make sure that we focus our attention, as best as we can, on whatever task it is that we are working on. That way we can help to avoid careless mishaps.

Also, focusing on our strengths instead of ruminating on our weaknesses, serves us very well now. When our thoughts are centered on what we can do, we feel empowered. However, when we dwell on our perceived deficits, that only adds to our feeling of pressure.

“Argue for your limitations and, sure enough, they’re yours.” Richard Bach

The Moon wraps up her sojourn through pragmatic Capricorn and enters experimental Aquarius at 4:52 pm EDT. That Moon sign change may also be when we are more inclined to throw caution to the wind. We need to remember, though, that caution often is a byproduct of wisdom.

In the News:

United Airlines announced on Monday it will merge with Continental Airlines in a deal worth $3.2 billion, creating the world’s largest airline. Yesterday is when we had Mercury (ruler of travel and transportation) exactly trine to controlling and transforming Pluto, which rules joint resources. Pluto also likes to wield power and this merger will certainly do that. With Mercury and Pluto aligned, we often hear about big news stories that impact the masses (represented by Pluto).

Also, the transiting Sun in merger-acquisition Taurus square to pioneering Mars signifies taking action (square) on business dealings (Taurus).  Uranus also rules aviation and we additionally have practical, resourceful Saturn opposed to Uranus now. That is no doubt another factor as the two existing airlines (Saturn) come together to form essentially a new entity (Uranus) perhaps as a matter of survival (Saturn).

Enjoy your Tuesday!
