“We are driven by five genetic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun.” William Glasser.

Cosmic Watch:

There’s a feeling of liberation today as the Moon frolics through forward-thinking Sagittarius.  We feel a little like the tiny mouse that has escaped the clutches of a big fat cat. We require space to roam around.  We don’t want anyone cornering us.

With the Moon’s quincunxes to Mercury and the Sun in slower-moving Taurus, we may feel a little awkward articulating or discussing more practical concerns. We need a little more time to weigh and digest in this area.

Other than that, the energy of the day is very enthusiastic and free flowing. We have a sextile to social Venus, a trine to energetic Mars.

The Sagittarius Moon gives us a good measure of forward momentum to handle the ongoing Saturn-Uranus opposition.  What to keep, what to let go?  Today we may feel more comfortable letting go.  It’s not such a scary thing now. We are more hopeful. We reckon change might be a welcome dinner guest.

“All of life is a foreign country.” Jack Kerouac

On This Day in History:

On April 30, 1939 – NBC / RCA the first public television demo with Franklin D. Roosevelt at opening of New York World’s Fair.

Astrologically, on that day, pioneering/enegrizing Mars in corporate Capricorn was exactly trine to Neptune in Virgo; Neptune rules images, pictures, photography, while etail-oriented Virgo often loves to tinker and perfect.

Also, expansive Jupiter was near the end of Neptune-ruled Pisces and applying to a trine to transforming Pluto in Cancer, the sign of home and family. Whenever Jupiter travels through a sign it tends to create new opportunities for the areas ruled by that sign. Of course, the TV would eventually end up as a fixture in households everywhere.

“Healing takes courage, and we all have courage, even if we have to dig a little to find it.” Tori Amos

Cosmic Watch:

Moon continues her stay in renewing Scorpio harmoniously trining warmhearted Jupiter in Pisces (10:05 am EDT), potentially elevating our faith and generating ample opportunities for personal/interpersonal healing.  Ideally, a time when we may want to extend kind/compassionate gestures to others as a show of good will.

Venus in Gemini quincunx Pluto in Capricorn also suggests that we may decide to make a shift or alteration with respect to our priorities/focus in relationships as we perhaps scrutinize them more closely now.

On the shadow side, Venus-Pluto is sometimes linked with manipulation/or misusing other people’s resources so as to gain personal advantages.

“Everybody should practice simple and virtuous living.  They should never seek recourse to manipulative tendencies.”  Yajur Veda

Astrology 2010: Saturn Opposes Uranus, First U.S. Offshore Wind Farm

daily astrology, electricity, environmentalists, First offshore wind farm approved April 28 2010, fossil fuel dependency, Nantucket Sound, oil, Pisces rules fossil fuels, Saturn opposite Uranus, technology, Uranus in Pisces, US Interior Secretary Kenneth Salazar

Cosmic Watch:

The nation’s first offshore wind farm project, off the coast of Cape Cod, got the go ahead Wednesday (transforming Scorpio Full Moon Day) after nine years of regulatory review. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar approved the highly contested “Cape Wind” project saying it ushered in an era of clean energy in the U.S.

The project’s developer, Cape Wind Associates, says it plans to build 130 turbines about five miles off the Cape Cod coast by the end of the year.  The $1 billion project, which will cover 24 square miles, is expected to be challenged legally by those parties opposed to the construction.

Generally, a wind farm is viewed as a way to move away from our dependence on fossil fuels for electricity.

However, local Cape Cod residents have opposed this particular project citing, among other things, that it would interfere with tourism and boating and obstruct coastal views.

Uranus rules technological and scientific advancements and it is presently in the sign of Pisces which rules both the sea and oil.  So, the offshore wind farm would be depicted by Uranus in Pisces.

Saturn in Virgo would be representative of the residents who want to preserve the pristine (Virgo) coast as it is.

With Saturn opposite Uranus, there may be a tug of war between the old (Saturn) and the new (Uranus).  Oppositions denote turning points.

Of course, we have Saturn, Pluto, and Mercury retrograde, so who knows if this project will get off the ground as slated.  There will likely be reversals, delays.

“Tell me what you feel in your room when the full moon is shining in upon you and your lamp is dying out, and I will tell you how old you are, and I shall know if you are happy.” Henri Frederic Amiel

Cosmic Watch:

As the Moon becomes full in mysterious Scorpio (8:19 am EDT) we’re given a special invite by Pluto in Capricorn to potentially scale deeper with our self-awareness, including gaining insights into our inner emotional landscapes and feelings. We may become more cognizant of our basic core inklings and receive testament on what provokes or prods our passions.

Some possible questions to ponder now: What is our heart’s truest desire? What do we most covet? What is it that arouses our anger? What are we most fearful of losing? What is blocking us and holding us back?

Today’s lunation is occurring at 8 degrees of Scorpio and forms a T-Square to Mars in Leo and the Sun and Mercury Retrograde in Taurus.

Scorpio energy is typically perceived to be intensely emotional and self-examining, providing us with opportunity for clarity and redemptive purging. We balance this out with the opposing, more placid Taurus energy, which is very grounding and helps us to manifest our intentions.

This Full Moon is an excellent time for clearing and renewing ourselves, as the fixed Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio energy is concentrated and purposeful, allowing us to accomplish whatever we set out to do.

While there is always some resistance to change with the fixed signs, the energy now is much more malleable due to the powerful healing and rejuvenating aspects from Pluto to the Sun, Mercury and the Moon.

We also still have the exact opposition from Saturn in Virgo to Uranus in Pisces, which depicts a tug of war between the old and the new.  This Scorpio Full Moon beneficially assists us in our quest to move forward (Uranus) while pitching outworn elements of the past (Saturn).

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” – Lao Tzu

Cosmic Watch:

Sometimes it is hard to know what to let go of and what to hold on to.

That is what we are facing now as Saturn in Virgo exactly opposes Uranus in Pisces. Saturn represents the Old Guard.  Uranus represents the New Order.

Oppositions signify turning points in consciousness.

Letting go of people, situations, desires, can be painful.  However, holding onto aspects of our lives that are clearly outworn or not really in our best interests/core values, can serves as a roadblock to our moving ahead.

Now is a good time for us to make peace with the past. Being thankful for the full range of experiences that we have had is perhaps a good starting point. Too, choosing to trust that what lies ahead will be exactly what we need for where we are in our journey can also be helpful.

Astrology April 25, 2010: Beatles’ Paul and John Meet Under “Venus-Uranus”

Beatles, daily astrology, destiny, Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for first time, love, Mars conjunct Uranus, Mars in Leo, Pluto in Leo, rock n roll, Venus conjunct Uranus

Three days before Elvis Presley’s second movie ‘Loving You’ debuted in theaters, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time as teenagers on July 6, 1957.  John had formed a group called ‘The Quarrymen’ and was playing with his band at the Woolten Parish Church Garden Fete when the two were introduced.  Later in 1960, the two men would form the group ‘The Beatles.’

Most of us meet new people all the time in the course of our daily lives. In cases when we have an attraction or fascination with someone, astrologers like to look to the aspects of Venus, the relationship planet, that governs love and attraction.

Venus also represents artistic and musical expression, as well as money, beauty, fashion, and possessions.

In the heavens on the very day that John and Paul met, Venus was exactly conjunct the highly individualistic, freedom-loving Uranus. Both planets were in the creative, entertainment sign of Leo.

Venus-Uranus aspects are sometimes characterized as “love at first sight.” Uranian energy is electrifying, like a sudden bolt of lightning out of the blue.

Uranus also rules inventors and can denote genius.  Uranus’s ray stirs up original, even radical impulses within us.  The Venus-Uranus relationship pairing, may be inclined to break with the norm in many ways, as well as challenge convention.

Later, of course, when John and Paul were with the Beatles’ they would revolutionize the world not only with their music but also with their long hair which was so different than the prevailing styles, but it set them apart and probably greatly added to their success as well as uniqueness.

Venus-Uranus can denote striking appearances/charismatic appeal. Elizabeth Taylor, for example, has Venus exactly conjunct Uranus in her chart

In addition to Venus conjunct Uranus in Leo, energetic and pioneering Mars was also closely conjoined with both of them, just three degrees away, on July 6, 1957.  All three were harmoniously and powerfully trine to longevity Saturn in Sagittarius, the sign which rules publishing.

Perhaps the rewarding Saturn trines helped them to later achieve worldly success with the publishing and recording of their unique blend of music, as well as adding a lasting quality to their relationship.

Sometimes Venus Uranus relationships do not endure over time, and while John and Paul did have their ups and downs and were separated from each other, the byproducts of their relationship will always endure in terms of their musical legacy.

Saturn also helps us to focus and discipline ourselves and aligned to the three Leo planets they were able to successfully channel their creativity.

So, in recapping the energy of that fateful day, we see that there was grand opportunity for creative expression (exemplified by Venus) and this creativity would ideally be able to embody originality and even elements of genius (Uranus).

There was also the trailblazing Mars energy suggesting a passion for pioneering something new.  The trines to Saturn seemingly made it all come together successfully in the world.

The public reaction later to John and Paul, as part of the Beatles, and the music that they wrote could also be characterized as very Venus-Uranus, in that many of us instantly fell in love with them and their songs.

Mars conjunct Venus, too, can be a highly romantic influence and probably why Paul and John wrote so many love songs.  Plus, the influence possibly gave the pair sex appeal and a special charisma.

The erratic and more volatile Mars Uranus conjunction also perhaps fueled a rebellious streak in their relationship with each other, and this was depicted in their music at times as well.  Mars-Uranus also helped to firmly establish them as trend setters in the world.

It’s interesting, too, that when John and Paul met each other, Elvis Presley, whose music played a big role in their lives, also seemed to be at his prime, in terms of his display of raw talent and creativity.  Pluto, the transformer, was importantly at the end of Leo then.

When a planet gets to the end of the sign, I often think it’s very symbolic and represents the highest or fullest expression of the energy of that sign.  Of course, in this case, Leo rules entertainment and self-expression.  Pluto always has a powerfully regenerating affect on us.  It also rules the masses and affects mass consciousness.

With Pluto at the end of Leo, we not only had Elvis transforming the entertainment world with his original stage performances and riveting music, we also had John and Paul coming together for the first time.  John and Paul would later reshape the music industry, as well as personally change many of us forever in the process.  All three introduced us to new levels of creativity and personal self-expression (Leo) through their art that we had not witnessed before and all had a huge impact on the collective (Pluto). They were all legends. What you would expect with Pluto who likes to debut historic firsts. And he saved the very best for the end of Leo.

Astrology April 23, 2010: Mercury, Pluto, and The AIDS Virus Discovery

The statistics on AIDS are staggering.

More than 25 million people around the world have died from AIDS-related diseases.

At the end of 2007, UNAIDS estimated that 32.9 million people were living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.  That’s compared to 29.5 million in 2001.

Suffice it to say, probably most of us have been touched by HIV/AIDS in some fashion or form.  I was first personally impacted in the early 1990s when a co-worker of mine died from AIDS. We were the same age.  I remember he had open sores all over his legs from the disease.

HIV is a “lentivirus” that attacks the immune system. The term “lentivirus” denotes a “slow virus” that takes a long time to manifest harmful effects in the body.

As most of us know, HIV is spread by sexual contact with an infected person. It can also be transmitted by sharing needles or syringes with someone who is infected. Less commonly, it is spread by blood transfusion, but the incidence of this has gone down with the advent of blood-screening for HIV antibodies.

The first recognized cases of AIDS occurred in the U.S. in mainly gay men in the early 1980s.

It was back on April 23, 1984, that the AIDS (acquired immune deficiency) virus was identified. The discovery of the AIDS virus was viewed at the time as a gigantic breakthrough in medical research.

On the same day the AIDS virus was identified, transiting Mercury was exactly opposite Pluto in Scorpio. But unless you were an astrologer, you probably didn’t know that at the time. Nor would you have cared.

Mercury rules news and information. It also governs our thinking and ideas.

Opposition aspects often signify turning points or a culmination in awareness.

Pluto, as the ruler of the sign of Scorpio, symbolizes death and rebirth and transformational changes. Pluto’s ray is often associated with life-altering events, historic firsts, matters impacting the masses, and yes, breakthrough discoveries.

Scorpio is the sign of the zodiac that is also connected specifically to medical research. It also rules sex and intimacy, and Pluto represents sexual issues.

What is also noteworthy here, when life-altering, transforming Pluto entered the sex sign of Scorpio, is essentially when most of us really became aware of AIDS.  It’s also when we started seeing glimpses of the impact of that deadly disease upon the world. Pluto first entered Scorpio in November of 1983.  It left that sign in November of 1995.

Astrology: Saturn in Taurus Sets Stage for “First Earth Day”

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find resources of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” Rachel Carson.

“Taurus” is the sign of stewardship. Under its influence, we learn how to value and effectively manage our resources.

So it should come as no surprise that on the very first “Earth Day,”  April 22, 1970, transiting Saturn, which also depicts the Earth in astrology, was moving through the sign of Taurus.

Earth Day was originally founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as a way to inspire awareness and appreciation for the resources of the Earth.

As many of us know, Saturn is traditionally billed as the “Taskmaster,” he teaches us some of our most important lessons in life. Some astrologers equate him to “karma.”

Saturn also shows us where we may have blockages or limitations and where we may be resistant to change.

Saturn itself represents the “principle of conservation.” With Saturn, we often are forced to make do with less, often through hardship or loss.  As a result, we learn not to waste any of the resources at our disposal.

I think Saturn in Taurus finally began to open our eyes to the fact that the Earth’s resources are finite, and that they needed to be better preserved.  We started coming to the conclusion that we had not been managing Earth’s bounty properly. We had been wasteful and self-indulgent.

Also at the time of the first Earth Day, expansive Jupiter, the planet of opportunity, was at 0 degrees of Scorpio, the sign of rebirth, depicting opportunity for a “re-awakening consciousness.”  I think it was very symbolic, too, that it had just entered that sign, spawning fresh awareness.

Scorpio also has to do with management of joint or shared resources, as the opposite sign to Taurus. Very appropriate here for the management of shared resources and Earth Day, this quote by Wendell Barry:

“The earth is what we all have in common.”

What was also very beautiful about the energy of April 22, 1970, Venus, showing what we love and value, was at home in its own sign of Taurus and applying to an exact harmonious trine to transforming Pluto in Virgo.  Pluto is the ruler of regenerating Scorpio and represents the Earth’s inner core, while Virgo governs health and proper nutrition.

It’s as if suddenly that day, with Venus trine Pluto, we had a new, healthy, transforming love affair with Earth, with a desire to make it a better place. We got a renewing glimpse of its value and meaning to all of us. Venus-Pluto is associated with emotionally powerful love affairs that seem to have the added element of “fate” or “destiny” to them.

“There is enough for all. The earth is a generous mother; she will provide in plentiful abundance food for all her children if they will cultivate her soil in justice and in peace.” Bourke Coekran.

Cosmic Watch:

The same day that Chiron, the Wounded Healer, enters Pisces, the leading female figure of the 1960s civil rights movement – 98-year-old Dorothy Height – dies. Too, the last time that Chiron was in Pisces – from 1960 to 1969 – that period coincided with the rise of the civil rights movement and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Pisces is thought to symbolize, among other things, civil rights/disenfranchised entities, the downtrodden, medical/hospital workers, as well as such qualities as unconditional love, compassion, and empathy.

Chiron symbolizes our deepest wounds and attempts to heal them.

Also today, the D.C. Council approved a bill to allow chronically ill patients to use marijuana with some stipulations.

Of course, the medical marijuana issue has been ongoing for a while, around the country. Pisces also rules drugs and medications.

Astrology April 20, 2010: Sun Enter Taurus, Chiron Enters Pisces

building, Chiron enters Pisces, consolidation, daily astrology, decluttering, Moon in Cancer, renewal, Saturn opposite Uranus, Sun in Taurus, value

Cosmic Watch:

The Sun enters consolidating Taurus.  It’s time to focus our energies more upon building things of value and permanence.  It’s also time to discern and evaluate the existing structures around us to gauge their ongoing purpose and relevance in our lives.

For example, we may enjoy certain things or activities, however, due to shifting priorities, we may need to phase some stuff out now, as we become more aware that we only have so much time and energy at our disposal. Taurus energy is all about focusing and building upon our successes. It is very practical, material, and no-nonsense, and prefers things plain and simple.

With the Moon in nesting Cancer, we may also want to focus our thoughts now on finding value in our homes. Some possible questions to ponder here: How do we regard our home spaces?  What do they reveal about us? Are they warm and inviting? Do they reflect our personalities? Do they give us peace? If not, why not?

“The most important work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes.”

Since spring is a time of renewal, a period when we are symbolically born again, it is often deemed a perfect time to rejuvenate our living quarters. Also, with Saturn presently opposite Uranus, we are perhaps being urged by the cosmos now to discard whatever is outworn (Saturn) in order to grow (Uranus).

Additionally, with the Sun, Mercury and Venus all in the money and possession sign of Taurus, we may want to have a yard sale and sell the things we no longer want, while pocketing some cash in the process.

Wounded Healer Chiron also enters Pisces today. The last time it was in this sign was from 1960 to 1969 coinciding with the peace and civil rights movements and free love and hippies. Pisces at its most noble expression represents Divine Love and compassion and the transcendence of physical boundaries. Back in the 60s, psychedelic drugs became popular with many young people trying to dissolve the hold of the physical world around them.

I have a feeling this time around with Chiron in Pisces, there may be far-reaching advances in medicine and perhaps more focus on natural and or homeopathic treatments, especially since spiritual Neptune will also be entering Pisces in the near future.

I also think we will be focusing more and more of our attention on the sea and our water supply, which is also ruled by Pisces.  Also, on oil.  Hopefully, Chiron will help us to both heal ourselves and the planet by living greener and more naturally.

Enjoy your Tuesday!
