“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” Dr. Seuss, American Writer and Cartoonist.

Our focus turns to our relationships today as the Moon leaves work-oriented Virgo and enters social Libra at 7:21 am EDT.  Libra is the sign of balance, so with the Moon here we are poised to take inventory of our relationships with an eye to evaluating whether or not they contain a good amount of give and take.  Also, we may be inclined now to ponder exactly how it is that our relationship needs are getting met.

We also have a Full Moon in Libra at 10:25 pm EDT adding even more weight and focus to the relationship realm. Full Moons always represent a culmination of awareness so we are better able to have potential breakthroughs in realizing exactly what relationship moves we may need to make. Venus, which rules the “love urge,” is also exactly sextile (an opportunity aspect) to mystical Neptune. This Venus-Neptune exchange of energy can make us seek out a more “spiritualized” type of love reflecting perhaps our desire for meeting a “soul mate.”

Famous persons born on this date: John Major, Pearl Bailey, Billy Carter, Terence Hills

In the news: President Obama (a Leo) made a “surprise trip” to Afghanistan on Sunday.  Not really a surprise, however, if we look at his horoscope now.  Mars, the planet that rules war, is at 2 degrees of Leo exactly conjoined his Mercury in Leo (which is also at 2 degrees).  Mercury rules our thinking and thought processes and conjunct “warrior Mars” now, it is natural that President Obama would be more inclined to want to go visit, in person, a “war zone,” especially since he is Commander-in-Chief. The nature of Mars is also very assertive (Mars rules the aggressive urge) so he is potentially more desirous of wanting to personally strike up communication (Mercury) with other world leaders (which Leo rules). He is also likely feeling much more self-confident in and energized by his ideas. (Mars will be conjunct President Obama’s Mercury through the first few days of April.)

Peace and love, everyone! Enjoy your Monday!

“Where there’s a will, there are five hundred relatives.” Unknown Source.

Don’t fret.  If you didn’t get around to dusting away the cobwebs or cleaning the toilet bowl yesterday, you still have time, as the Moon will be in tidy Virgo all day long.  I’m actually cleaning my laptop as I write this. I feel compelled to do so out of a huge Virgo sense of guilt.  In case you didn’t know, the Virgo Moon is the “Queen of Neat.”  No one can top her when it comes to maintaining impeccable order and cleanliness. She’s also about ready to drive all the spontaneous Aries planets crazy and we’re already heading up on a Full Moon.

Relationship Venus in Aries is looking for a poet, musician or film maker to date, with her upcoming sextile to creative Neptune. This aspect will be exact on Monday. Of course, with Venus in aggressive, impatient Aries, she’s looking to get a jump on things. If you’re looking for romance, you may want to, too.  Just make sure that your love interest, is not already married or otherwise unavailable.  Sometimes with Neptune, we fall for people who are not “all that they purport to be.”

“The one charming thing about marriage is that it makes a life of deception absolutely necessary for both parties.” Oscar Wilde

Famous persons born on this day: Russell Banks, Michael Smith, Jane Rule, Eric S. Dostie.

Memorable event in history on this date: March 28, 1922 – The first microfilm device was introduced.  In astrology, film is ruled by Neptune, and on that date, Neptune was harmonious (exactly sextile) to Jupiter.  Jupiter is an expansive influence, which brings about growth and opportunity, so aligned with Neptune we had the debut of the microfilm device.   Pretty cool, huh?

Peace and love, everyone.  Enjoy your Sunday!

Astrology: Transiting Pluto’s “Appearance” In The News

“I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers.” Mahatma Gandi

As an astrologer, I have a passion for “mundane astrology.”  That’s the branch of astrology that deals with world events or world affairs.  Whenever something grabs my attention in the news, I immediately check out the stars to see if there may be a “heavenly connection.”  I was also a radio news reporter, at one time, so I guess the news is still in my blood. Too, with the way I see things, I do not believe we’re really getting the “full picture” unless we also look at the meaning and symbolism of the heavens in conjunction with what’s happening around us.  It’s part of the maxim I subscribe to: “As above, so below.”

With that said, It was some kind of week on the astrological front with the Sun and Pluto dramatically duking it out (“square” to each other in the sky).  Mundane astrologers were poised to expect “big things” to happen this week (because of this aspect) and we were not disappointed.  Everyone who paid any attention to the major news stories saw the more “collective ramifications” of the Sun-Pluto meet-up. Pluto pretty much dominated the U.S. headlines. Pluto governs, among other things: debt, credit, insurance, atomic energy, breakthrough discoveries. It also represents the urge for power as well as power struggles, changes in power, sexual issues, obsessions.

When Pluto’s ray is activated we usually see explosive issues erupting that have been simmering under the surface for a while. Pluto, as Lord of the Underworld, rules what is hidden, including hidden forces such as the Mafia and terrorists. It also symbolically or literally denotes the “death-rebirth process.” Pluto characteristically delineates crises that require immediate responses. It shows us what has broken down and what needs to be repaired, overhauled, or pitched. It governs events of more of an extreme nature that have the possibility to change and transform our lives.  Pluto also rules the masses or the collective itself.

(Also, to briefly decode into English the astrology: 1) A “square aspect” is a stressful alignment that denotes inner tension or conflict that ends up forcing action to alleviate the situation. 2) The Sun, by transit, “illuminates” or “brings out into the open” the issues that are ruled by the planet or heavenly body that the Sun is conjoined with, which in this case, was Pluto. 3)Sun square Pluto is a short-term influence that lasts for a few days, but it can powerfully trigger the impact of longer-term transits, which it did this week, most notably the long-term Saturn square Pluto transit.)

So, let’s revisit some of the more notable “Sun-Pluto news stories” of this past week. In many of the cases, too, we’ll see that action was taken (the square activating energy) to deal with or solve a long-standing problematic (Pluto) situation.  Keep in mind, too, that Pluto governs “reforms.” Also, importantly, I am not saying that “Sun-Pluto” caused anything to happen, I am simply drawing correlations, connecting the cosmic dots:

– U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced new rules Thursday which make it harder to expel gay service members. That tied in with the Sun-Pluto aspect in a few different ways: The Sun was squaring Pluto from the pioneering sign of Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, where it deftly could have theoretically primed us, on a psychological level, for new beginnings. Aries also rules the military, so you thereby had the potential for more receptivity within the military for accepting the new protocol (the new rules). Pluto, as stated earlier, also rules sexual issues, especially hidden sexual issues. And, Pluto deals with rebirth or transformation.  Pluto is presently in the sign of Capricorn, which rules government, so what we ended up having here was a growing awareness within the government that more needed to be done, changes needed to be implemented, about the military’s “hush-hush” (hidden Pluto) sexual orientation policy.

– The Obama administration announced major plans Friday to lower mortgage debt for troubled borrowers.  Of course, this was put forth due to the ongoing foreclosure crisis as well as the growing ranks of people underwater with their mortgages due to the real estate slump. (Pluto rules foreclosures and mortgages.)

– Significant changes were also approved Thursday by Congress that will overhaul the student loan program. The student loan “reform package” was part of the package of fixes to the healthcare bill.  (Pluto rules all loans including student loans.)

– The historic health reform bill passed and was signed into law.  (Pluto rules insurance.)

– A Greek Debt deal was finally reached in Brussels on Thursday after months of impasse.

– President Obama and Russian President Medvedev finalized a new arms control treaty on Friday to further reduce the nuclear arsenals in each country. (Pluto rules nuclear weapons.)   This matter had been in the works for months before finally being agreed upon this week.  What also theoretically helped out here astrologically, with this particular issue, was the exact sextile (an opportunity aspect) from Mars to Saturn this week.  Mars rules matters of war and defense, while Saturn rules restrictions and limitations.  So with these two planets in alignment there was the potential for more of a mutual receptivity to reduce (Saturn) the nuclear arsenals (Mars and Pluto).  Also perhaps pivotal here, Saturn was in Libra, a sign that rules diplomacy and it was harmonious to Mars in Leo, with Leo ruling world leaders.

– Russian banned Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” as extremist on Friday in an effort to curb the growing appeal of far-right politics.  (Pluto rules fascism, dictators and extremism in any form.)

– President Obama asked on Wednesday that Cuba’s leader free “all political prisoners” characterizing conditions there as “deeply disturbing.” (Again an action aimed at a dictatorial, “Pluto-ruled” power.)

– More than 100 people with possible ties to Al-Qaeda were arrested in Saudia Arabia Wednesday for allegedly planning attacks on oil and security installations in the country.  Also that same day, Osama bin Laden threatened retaliation if the 9/11 suspects are put to death. (Pluto rules terrorism, secret societies.)

– Go Daddy, the world’s largest domain name registration company, announced Wednesday it was going to stop registering Websites in China after the Chinese government required customers to provide photographs and other identifying information before registering.  (Another example of Pluto as it pertains to power and control issues, and the matter of the control issue, coming to a head.)

– Pope Benedict was accused of failing to act in reference to the sexual abuse of 200 deaf boys in the 1990s by a priest in the U.S. (Pluto rules sexual issues, including hidden sexual abuse and pedophilia.)

– Scientists identified the Denisovin hominin, a previously unknown type of human, through DNA analysis of a finger found in a cave in Siberia Russia. (Pluto rules caves and hidden places.  It also rules DNA testing.)

In closing, for those who want to jot it down on their calendars, the Sun will meet up with Pluto again (by opposition aspect) late June 2010 and then (by square again) late September 2010.   Of course, other planets will be aspecting Pluto as well, this year, generating similar affects. We’ll keep you posted.

“No person who can read is ever successful at cleaning out an attic.” Ann Landers, Advice Columnist.

The Moon enters pristine Virgo at 6:57 am EDT.  A perfect day for spring-cleaning,  decluttering, working on projects that require concentration, like weeding and pruning. The logical, more left-brain, Virgo Moon enhances our analytical ability so we’re better able to evaluate any weaknesses in our Aries futuristic plans, as well as identify solutions to our problems. This is a very health-conscious placement for the Moon. It’s a great time to initiate any self-improvement agenda.

“When a man imagines, even after years of striving, that he has attained perfection, his decline begins.” Theodore Martin.

Famous Aries persons born on this day: Actress Kerri Ann Darling, Singer Mariah Carey, Actress Jennifer Grey, Rocker/Actor Shaun Cassidy.

Memorable event in history on this date: March 27, 1930 – The first radio broadcast from a ship at sea took place.

In astrology, the planet Uranus (which governs inventions) rules radio broadcasting. On that particular date, Uranus was at 11 degrees of Aries (a sign associated with firsts). Uranus was exactly sextile (harmonious) to expansive Jupiter at 11 degrees of Gemini. Gemini governs communication and Jupiter is associated with growth, burgeoning opportunities, so we had a perfect milieu for broadening out the realm of radio communication.  Also, to put the finishing touch on the cosmic equation that day: The Moon was in the sign of Pisces. Pisces rules the sea!

Peace and love, everyone.  Enjoy your Saturday!

Wedding Astrology: John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 41st Anniversary

“When people get cynical about love, they should look at us [Yoko and John Lennon] and see it is possible.” Yoko Ono.

March 20, 1969 marks the 41st wedding anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.  The colorful pair married in front of the Rock of Gibraltar in a ceremony that lasted only ten minutes.  Shortly afterwards, the newlyweds flew to Amsterdam, Holland where they set up quarters in the Presidential Suite at the Hilton.  There, for one week, they had the first of two “bed-ins for peace.”

At the hotel, they had a receiving line for the press, gave interviews, answered questions. Not your typical honeymoon fare activities, but then again, John (Libra) and Yoko (Aquarian) were never your “typical couple.”

In their astrological wedding chart that day (time unknown), insatiable Jupiter was exactly conjoined non-conforming Uranus in Libra. Libra is the zodiacal sign of marriage.  This potent influence suggested that their partnership would always tend to be “out of the ordinary.” Having these two planets prominent, there would characteristically be a large appetite (Jupiter) and enthusiasm for doing things differently, wanting to rebelliously break with tradition (Uranus), within the confines of their marriage (Libra).

The Sun was also opposite (stressful) Jupiter and Uranus in their horoscope, again reiterating a need for freedom and a tendency to excessive behaviors. The Sun-Uranus influence also, unfortunately, hinted at the chance for a sudden end to the marriage, as the nature of Uranus is often disruptive. The Sun also governs the husband in a wedding chart.

Mercury (communication) was in idealistic, imaginative Pisces. That tended to intellectually attune them more to the humanistic issues of the collective.  The  Neptune-ruled Pisces mindset, at its highest expression, is intrinsically about dissolving all boundaries, demonstrating selfless love and compassion for each other, peacefully co-existing. It endlessly envisions the world “as one,” just like John perpetually sang about.

Also in their marriage chart, the Sun (purpose) was exactly trine (harmonious) Neptune, again reinforcing that same hopeful theme.  The Sun-Neptune tie also gave the union more of a mystical, otherworldy quality to it.  Neptune denotes our link to the Divine.

Too, in wake of John’s tragic, sudden departure from the world, Yoko’s marriage to John has maybe, understandably, ended up becoming something “larger than life” for her, something that she has perhaps idealized and placed atop a pedestal.  Characteristically with Neptune, we tend to worship and glorify our partners.  And, of course, in Yoko’s case, she has had to live a life largely minus John’s physical presence.  She maybe has cultivated a rich “spiritual union” with him which would be consistent with the “illusory” Sun Neptune energy. Neptune rules illusion and imagination, as well as the ethereal realms.

Idealistic Mercury in Pisces was also square (inner tension) to opinionated Mars (the warrior) in Sagittarius in the chart.  Mars shows our enthusiasms and passions.  It also represents our aggressive urge. When it is in philosophical Sagittarius, we can become almost fanatical in our beliefs and often feel a deep need to proselytize others to bring them aboard our same wavelength. We can also be very controversial and blunt in our comments, as Mercury governs our speech and Mars in Sagittarius acts very spontaneously.

Additionally, in their wedding chart, Venus, the planet of love and marriage, was in fiery, adventurous Aries conjoined with dutiful Saturn.  Venus-Saturn ties often indicate “karmic relationships” in which we feel a deep sense of responsibility, obligation, and loyalty to each other.  Saturn is regarded as the “Lord of Karma” in astrology. This is because he often brings us those more difficult lessons in life that we need to learn and experience in order to evolve and achieve our higher purposes. During the course of their marriage, too, John and Yoko had plenty of Saturnian ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and even an 18-month separation.  Too, in the beginning, their very union alienated them from the public and many Beatles’ fans.  But despite everything, it managed to endure.

On another level,  the Venus placement in the sign of Aries showed, too, that the couple would tend to enjoy “active pursuits” and “pioneering endeavors” that would garner attention to themselves. Venus not only rules love relationships, it also rules what we love to do.  Aries as a sign focuses much of its attention on its own self-identity and self-discovery.

Actually, Venus in Aries can contain elements of narcissism to it  – making us a little too much enthralled with our own self-image. Of course, when John and Yoko were together, they were both young and still discovering themselves, both individually and as a couple.  And, they were both very famous, so they wanted to naturally capitalize on their fame and use it as a springboard to further their more noble, more  impersonal causes for the collective.

Mattel’s Barbie Doll Turns 51, March 9th 2010: Her Horoscope

51st Anniversary of The Barbie Doll, American Toy Fair, astrology, Barbie doll body image, Barbie is a double-Pisces, Barbie's 51st birthday, Barbie's debut in 1959, dolls, Mattel Barbie's horoscope, Mattel's Barbie turns 51, Neptune rules cosmetics, Pisces characteristics, toys, zodiac, zodiac signs

On March 9, 1959 the “Barbie doll” debuted at the American Toy Fair in New York.  Designed by Ruth Handler, Barbie was introduced by Mattel Toy Company, coming with a $3 price tag.

In the heavens that day, both the Sun (ego) and the Moon (emotions) were in the dreamy sign of Pisces, so “Barbie the doll” was a “double-Pisces.”  That means that the “Pisces traits” were more accentuated in her.

Typical Pisces characteristics: sensitive, emotional, spiritual, compassionate.   Natives of this sign look for the best in others.  They are highly romantic and love flowers, roses, poetry.

As a double-Pisces, Barbie would wholeheartedly believe in “fairy-tale endings” and living “happily ever after.”  As a Pisces doll for a little girl, Barbie would also kindle that same kind of fantasy mindset in her real life friend.

Also in Barbie’s horoscope that day, Venus (indicating what we love) was  in the “self-focused” sign of Aries.  It was throwing an “adult-themed” sextile (harmonious ray) to playful Mars in Gemini.  Mars is the planet that governs our sexual, passionate side. When Venus is favorable to Mars we more freely express, even flaunt, our sexuality.

Barbie’s introduction to the world under this grown-up “Venus Mars energy” gave all of us little girls an adult doll to play with.  It also provided us with a “perfect” adult body image from which to aspire to and pattern ourselves after. The early Barbie commercials promulgated the message “Be like Barbie.”

Venus in Aries is a more narcissistic or “self-love”  placement. It is more focused on outward appearance.  This also fits in nicely with the Barbie doll philosophy.  Barbie needs the latest fashion and personal accessories to prop up her image and feelings of beauty and self-worth. Venus in Aries also loves to be on the go “doing things.”

Pisces ruled by Neptune (illusion) loves make-up, theater and costumes.  Pisces the sign actually rules cosmetics.  I remember as a little girl when I got my very first Barbie I was so impressed by her blue eye shadow and thick black eyelashes.  Perhaps that is why when I became old enough to wear make-up, I wore the exact same “Barbie eye make-up” for years.

Both Venus and Mars were also favorable to electrifying Uranus in Barbie’s chart.  Uranus is the planet associated with sudden attractions and original creations. Barbie was most definitely an original creation and an instant hit with little girls.  And, she still is. According to statistics, two Barbie’s are sold every second somewhere in the world.
