Patricia’s Astrology: October 15, 1969 “The Vietnam Moratorium”

On This Date In History:

October 15, 1969 – The “Vietnam Moratorium” is held.  Millions of people protest the war (including Bill Clinton, who was a student at Oxford then). In the heavens, passionate “Warrior” Mars in Capricorn, the sign of government, is exactly square to “Philosophical” Jupiter in Libra, the sign of peace and diplomacy.

“Mars-Jupiter” is an aspect with a great history of “firing up our passions and idealism.” Mars, the energy planet, energizes whatever it touches and Jupiter represents our moral beliefs.  We are willing to “do combat” (Mars) for “what we believe in” now (Jupiter), similar to the energy of today’s Aquarius Moon which speaks to us about getting involved in causes “greater than ourselves.” With the Vietnam Moratorium, the protesters peacefully dissented (diplomatic Libra) against the “war policies”of the government (Mars in Capricorn). Mars rules war and the military.

Often Mars-Jupiter is associated with “religious fanaticism,” too, as Jupiter rules religion, and the nature of  Jupiter is such (especially when it is aligned with energizer Mars) that we can easily “go overboard” and get “carried away” with whatever we are involved with.

Even though Jupiter is an “expansive influence,” and more of a “benevolent planet,” sometimes the pitfall with it is we do not know when to “rein ourselves in.” For example, Jupiter is also associated with obesity and excess. We can’t stop with just “one jelly doughnut,” we have to consume a whole dozen! So, moderation is often needed and called for with Jupiter, if we are going to judiciously utilize the opportunity energies of this great planet to the best capacity.

Patricia’s Astrology: Mars Neptune and The Advent of Color TV

On This Date in History:

On October 14, 1964, Philips began experimenting with color TV. In the heavens, the transiting Moon was passing through Scientific Aquarius, the sign which rules television broadcasting. Activator Mars, in Entertainment Leo, was also exactly square to Photogenic Neptune in Transforming Scorpio.  Neptune rules photography and images, and the whole realm of “illusion” and “make believe.” The square is a powerful astrological influence that “forces action.”

“Mars-Neptune” is traditionally heralded in astrology as one of the most creative aspects of all. This is because Neptune rules dreams and the imagination, and Mars acts as a catalyst to fire up whatever it is aligned with.  The nature of Mars is also pioneering, so with the help of the Experimental and Technologically-Savvy Aquarius Moon, there was this attempt to develop something new in the way of Leo entertainment: “color TV images” (Neptune). Neptune is also often referred to as the planetary ray that makes us see things through “rose-colored glasses.” Another tie in here with color and vision.

Patricia’s Astrology On this Day in History October 13: Shroud of Turin

On This Day In History:

On October 13, 1988, the “Shroud of Turin,” a linen cloth depicting the image of a man who looks to have sustained injuries, consistent with a crucifixion, that some also believe is the image of Jesus Christ at the time of his burial, is shown by carbon-testing to “be a fake” from the Middle Ages. However, to this day, the matter is still mired in much controversy. Some critics contend that the samples used for the testing were not typical of the entire shroud.

Fascinatingly, on this date, Communicator and News Reporter Mercury was retrograde in Libra and, as many of us know, information received under a retrograde Mercury can be revised or subject to change later.

Also, much more central to the matter here, is Traditionalist Saturn’s exact conjunction with Discovery Uranus at 27 degrees of Sagittarius.  Sagittarius is a sign associated with formal doctrine and religion.  Uranus rules modern science and testing (the carbon-testing), and Saturn represents the established form and structure in our lives, which in this case, would symbolize the common perception about the Shroud of Turin.

With Saturn-Uranus, which is a very powerful aspect, there can be a “sudden attack or jolt” (Uranus) to the foundational fabric of our lives (Saturn).  Uranus perennially acts like a “bolt of lightning” out of the blue. Since the sign of Sagittarius is also involved here, this new emergence was felt in the area of conventional religion.

Additionally, the transiting North Node of the Moon was at 11 degrees of Pisces, the sign of mysticism and spiritually, and exactly trine to transformer Pluto at 11 degrees of Scorpio, the sign that deals with the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth (or resurrection).

Pluto acts in such a way to shine a flashlight into a cave. We glean a new consciousness or awareness of what was previously hidden or obscured from view. Pluto also rules death and the Shroud of Turin depicts images of someone who likely died from being crucified.  The North Node of the Moon is often thought to play a part in our karmic and spiritual evolution. With the North Node-Pluto influence we were seeing the Shroud in a “new light.”

Also, the transiting South Node of the Moon at 11 degrees of Analytical Virgo was exactly conjunct Venus, with Venus ruling objects that we love and value. Venus could also be representative of the Shroud or cloth itself, a material item of the past (South Node rules the past), being put “under the Virgo microscope” for further study and digestion.

The Catholic Church is the owner of the Shroud of Turin. The cloth is currently stored in the Cappella della Santa Sindone (the chapel of the Holy Shroud) in the Duomo di San Giovanni. It is only displayed every 25 years, due to the fragile nature of the cloth. It will not be displayed again until 2025, although there is a replica of it available for viewing.

COSMIC WEATHER:

The Universe is suggesting we “mingle and merge,” this weekend.  It’s providing us with an idealistic, romantic Libra Moon all Friday and into Saturday.  The Moon will also conjoin “Love Goddess” Venus (4:59 am EDT Friday) and “Sex Lord” Mars (9:22 am EDT Friday).

The Moon will then descend into Sexual Scorpio on Saturday evening (8:27 pm EDT), at which time we are highly urged to practice our “night moves” with grace and precision, particularly when the Moon throws a “sextile” aspect to “Passionate” Pluto (1:37 am EDT Sunday).

We also have the option of continuing to perfect these steamy activities throughout the day on Sunday, as the Moon stays in Scorpio all day long. Or, we can choose to do weeding and yard work.  It’s up to us. We only need to make sure that if we do choose the second option, that we don’t get carried away and try to “get intimate”  with the lawn mower. A potentially painful proposition that could also result in an “uneven lawn,” which could make us wildly unpopular in the neighborhood.

In the News:

Federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker, on Thursday, lifted his stay on the same-sex marriages ban, paving the way for gay couples in California to marry in that state. Walker delayed, however, implementation of his order to lift the ban until August 18th.

Walker’s ruling a week ago, that a voter-approved ban on same sex marriage was unconstitutional, was rendered with pioneering Mars in Matrimonial Libra exactly squaring off with transformational Pluto in governmental Capricorn. Mars-Pluto can be indicative of someone “seizing power” or taking “forceful action.”  It is also a classic “war aspect” replete with power clashes and clashes of will. There is strong opposition to Judge Walker’s ruling.

Also, “Status Quo Preserver” Saturn in Nuptials Libra was opposite Uranus in Aries when Walker ruled last week.  Uranus is associated with equality and gay rights issues and also represents change. With the Saturn and Uranus opposition, once again, we had the pitting of the old versus the new, with the new winning out this time, perhaps also because of the simultaneously strong Mars-Pluto aspect which tends to bulldoze existing structures and protocol.

On August 18th, Saturn in relationship Libra will be exactly squaring transforming Pluto to a tee. It ought to be interesting to see how this aspect plays out. Saturn-Pluto can represent “death to the past,” but often not without a bitter fight and, of course, same-sex marriage remains a controversial and polarizing issue.

Famous Leo Birthdays: Fidel Castro (84 Friday), Halle Berry (44 Saturday), Melinda Gates (46 Sunday)

Enjoy your weekend!

I will be away from this blog for a while.  My 2 degree Aries rising is being sadistically hounded by the likes of Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto, at the moment, so I must go into seclusion and hiding for a while, with or without George Clooney. George, if you’re out there, I have some milk and cookies for you. Please stop by.

Anyway, I’ll return here once I deem it is safe to come back out. Right now, it’s a battlefield out there, so I’m seeking cover. I also do need some rest. Been burning the candle at both ends, and, sadly, there is very little of my candle left to burn at this point.

“There is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can circumvent or hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul.” Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Cosmic Watch:

We shape our reality with our thinking.  We also give away our power when we feel that outside forces are more powerful than we are.

With the Moon entrenched in detached, analytical Aquarius, it’s a good day to take the temperature of our thinking and to reflect upon the kinds of ideas that we are putting inside our heads, particularly the ideas about ourselves and our own capabilities.

Perhaps we have too many recycled, fear-based thoughts and not enough empowering thoughts of what we can do.

Maybe we are afraid to try new things because we are scared of ridicule or rejection.

Aquarius is about freeing ourselves from self-limiting beliefs and ideas. It is about going beyond the herd mentality and cultivating the power of our own original thinking.

Often the simple act of brainstorming or talking over ideas with friends can help us to see things in a new light.

“Should we all confess our sins to one another we would all laugh at one another for our lack of originality.” Kahlil Gibran.

Astrology: Saturn in Taurus Sets Stage for “First Earth Day”

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find resources of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” Rachel Carson.

“Taurus” is the sign of stewardship. Under its influence, we learn how to value and effectively manage our resources.

So it should come as no surprise that on the very first “Earth Day,”  April 22, 1970, transiting Saturn, which also depicts the Earth in astrology, was moving through the sign of Taurus.

Earth Day was originally founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as a way to inspire awareness and appreciation for the resources of the Earth.

As many of us know, Saturn is traditionally billed as the “Taskmaster,” he teaches us some of our most important lessons in life. Some astrologers equate him to “karma.”

Saturn also shows us where we may have blockages or limitations and where we may be resistant to change.

Saturn itself represents the “principle of conservation.” With Saturn, we often are forced to make do with less, often through hardship or loss.  As a result, we learn not to waste any of the resources at our disposal.

I think Saturn in Taurus finally began to open our eyes to the fact that the Earth’s resources are finite, and that they needed to be better preserved.  We started coming to the conclusion that we had not been managing Earth’s bounty properly. We had been wasteful and self-indulgent.

Also at the time of the first Earth Day, expansive Jupiter, the planet of opportunity, was at 0 degrees of Scorpio, the sign of rebirth, depicting opportunity for a “re-awakening consciousness.”  I think it was very symbolic, too, that it had just entered that sign, spawning fresh awareness.

Scorpio also has to do with management of joint or shared resources, as the opposite sign to Taurus. Very appropriate here for the management of shared resources and Earth Day, this quote by Wendell Barry:

“The earth is what we all have in common.”

What was also very beautiful about the energy of April 22, 1970, Venus, showing what we love and value, was at home in its own sign of Taurus and applying to an exact harmonious trine to transforming Pluto in Virgo.  Pluto is the ruler of regenerating Scorpio and represents the Earth’s inner core, while Virgo governs health and proper nutrition.

It’s as if suddenly that day, with Venus trine Pluto, we had a new, healthy, transforming love affair with Earth, with a desire to make it a better place. We got a renewing glimpse of its value and meaning to all of us. Venus-Pluto is associated with emotionally powerful love affairs that seem to have the added element of “fate” or “destiny” to them.

“There is enough for all. The earth is a generous mother; she will provide in plentiful abundance food for all her children if they will cultivate her soil in justice and in peace.” Bourke Coekran.

Horoscopes of Kitty Kelley and Oprah, New Oprah Book

Kitty Kelley’s 544-page unauthorized biography of television icon, Oprah Winfrey, is slated to be released by Crown Publishing tomorrow (April 13).  Kelley reportedly conducted 850 interviews during her three years of research for the book. More than 500,000 copies of the first printing have been ordered.  Kelley’s other celebrity books have all been best-sellers, including her biographies on Elizabeth Taylor, Nancy Reagan, and Frank Sinatra.

In Kelley’s horoscope now (DOB 4/4/42 at 5:00 pm Spokane WA) she has transiting Saturn conjunct her natal Neptune in her first house of new beginnings.  Saturn represents worldly achievements while Neptune has to do with our fantasies and dreams. This planetary pairing, at its most optimum manifestation, can symbolize the “realization of a dream.”  The shadow side of this aspect, however, can signify a period that can also be ego-denying (Neptune) in various regards.

For example, sometimes with Saturn-Neptune we may do something noble but then fail to get proper credit or attention for it. Or, perhaps our efforts on a project are misunderstood or become misrepresented by others. Such is the nature of Neptune. It  characteristically dissolves or confuses aspects of structures that we have carefully erected, mainly as a way of keeping us humble.

We all go through Neptune periods. They are never easy, but on the positive side, they can help foster a more spiritual view on things, as we begin to realize the fleeting nature of life on the earth plane. Neptune, at its highest vibration, represents our link to the Divine.

Since Kelley has Neptune in her first house, to begin with, she is also probably accustomed to being a little “out of step” with the rest of the world, as well as perhaps use to having her intentions not always fully understood by others (the first house is how others see us). Neptune often puts a veil of illusion or mystery around things that it touches, so sometimes when it is on the Ascendant it is harder to see through to the true essence or modus operandi of individuals who have it there.

Additionally, Saturn’s transit through the first house (which Kelley also has now) is often a time when we have to “go it alone.” The resources at our disposal are often diminished, so we have to be wiser or more judicious in the use of our energies and also more disciplined in our focus. Also, Kelley presently has Saturn opposing her Mercury (communication), an influence that can be restrictive or limiting for speech and communication matters, which is probably why she is reportedly getting a cooler reception from some members in the media regarding promotional interviews for her book. With Saturn-Mercury, too, our ideas and thoughts (Mercury) are often subjected to unrelenting criticism or rebuke (Saturn).

On the plus side, however, Saturn will soon be harmoniously trining both Kelley’s natal Saturn and Uranus conjunction in her ninth house of publishing, which should be a very positive influence for her new book in terms of sales.  The Saturn trine to its natal position usually rewards us materially for our past efforts.  Kelley’s natal birth chart, too, has many planetary aspects that suggest material success as a writer. Most notable is her Mars and Jupiter conjunction in the communication sign of Gemini.  She has this conjunction  exactly on her 10th house of career.  Jupiter rules writing and Mars denotes what we are passionate about and when these two are aligned, there can be a passion and flair for words and communication.

Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey (DOB 1/29/54 at 4:30 am Kosciusko MS) presently has transiting Pluto sitting close to her 29 degree Sagittarius Ascendant. Pluto on the Ascendant or first house can be very transformational and life-changing. Pluto symbolizes the urge for rebirth. Winfrey has already set into motion major changes in her life, under Pluto’s ray, including announcing that she will be leaving her syndicated daily TV show and most recently sharing that she is going to be hosting a new nightly TV show, in the future, on her own network.

Ironically, Pluto also rules secrets and mysteries (as the natural ruler of the eighth house and the sign of Scorpio). With Pluto on Winfrey’s first house of personality now, the stars suggest that it could very well be that we will be privy to finding out some new personal things about her. Pluto’s influence often acts in such a way that it brings to the surface what has previously been hidden or buried. Pluto’s presence here could also be indicating the attempt by Kelley to find out hidden things about Winfrey to share with the public, as it is the nature of Pluto to probe and inquire.

The higher spiritual function of Pluto is to serve as a purging agent, ridding us of elements that are no longer needed or that we have outgrown, that are keeping us from evolving. Winfrey may be trying to free herself of structure now that she has moved beyond.

Winfrey’s horoscope also suggests that she is by nature a more private individual as she has her assertive Mars in secretive and more controlling Scorpio.  It is additionally exactly square to her natal Pluto in Leo, often a potent aspect for success because  it shows unyielding drive and an indefatigable spirit.  Pluto denotes the urge for power and control, and combined with Mars, ruling the aggressive urge, individuals with this aspect can often end up assuming positions in which they wield a lot of authority. Her Pluto is also in Leo, ruling entertainment, the arena in which she has amassed her power.  The shadow side of Mars-Pluto is these individuals often have to be very careful not to misuse their power or manipulate others for their own selfish gains.

Interestingly, both Kelley and Winfrey have several astrological traits in common, including both have the Moon in Sagittarius, making them naturally adventurous and risk-takers, as well as being deft at conversation. Both also have Jupiter in the sign of Gemini, at 16 degrees of that sign, which is very ironic for both of them to have that planet at the very same degree.  Jupiter shows our talents and gifts, and what we are good at, and Gemini (as stated earlier) rules communication.  Winfrey has used her Jupiter, of course, to become a television talk show icon while Kelley has used it to become an iconic figure in the the world of celebrity biographies. In a way, similar destinies.

Wedding Astrology: John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 41st Anniversary

“When people get cynical about love, they should look at us [Yoko and John Lennon] and see it is possible.” Yoko Ono.

March 20, 1969 marks the 41st wedding anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.  The colorful pair married in front of the Rock of Gibraltar in a ceremony that lasted only ten minutes.  Shortly afterwards, the newlyweds flew to Amsterdam, Holland where they set up quarters in the Presidential Suite at the Hilton.  There, for one week, they had the first of two “bed-ins for peace.”

At the hotel, they had a receiving line for the press, gave interviews, answered questions. Not your typical honeymoon fare activities, but then again, John (Libra) and Yoko (Aquarian) were never your “typical couple.”

In their astrological wedding chart that day (time unknown), insatiable Jupiter was exactly conjoined non-conforming Uranus in Libra. Libra is the zodiacal sign of marriage.  This potent influence suggested that their partnership would always tend to be “out of the ordinary.” Having these two planets prominent, there would characteristically be a large appetite (Jupiter) and enthusiasm for doing things large-scale, differently, wanting to break with tradition (Uranus), perhaps within the confines of their marriage (Libra).

The Sun was also opposite Jupiter and Uranus in their horoscope, again reiterating a need for freedom and a possible tendency to excessive behaviors. The Sun-Uranus influence also hinted at the chance for a sudden end to the marriage. The Sun also governs the husband in a wedding chart.

Mercury (communication) was in idealistic, imaginative Pisces. That tended to intellectually attune them more to the humanistic issues of the collective.  The Neptune-ruled Pisces mindset, at its highest expression, is intrinsically about dissolving all boundaries, demonstrating selfless love and compassion for each other, peacefully co-existing. It endlessly envisions the world “as one,” just like John perpetually sang about.

Also in their marriage chart, the Sun (purpose) was exactly trine (harmonious) Neptune, again reinforcing that same hopeful theme.  The Sun-Neptune tie also gave the union more of a mystical, otherworldly quality to it.  Neptune denotes our link to the Divine.

Too, in wake of John’s tragic, sudden departure from the world, Yoko’s marriage to John has maybe, understandably, ended up becoming something “larger than life” for her, something that she has perhaps idealized and placed atop a pedestal.  Characteristically with Neptune, we tend to worship and glorify our partners.  And, of course, in Yoko’s case, she has had to live a life largely minus John’s physical presence.  She maybe has cultivated a rich “spiritual union” with him which would be consistent with the “illusory” Sun Neptune energy. Neptune rules illusion and imagination, as well as the ethereal realms.

Idealistic Mercury in Pisces was also square (inner tension) to opinionated Mars (the warrior) in Sagittarius in the chart.  Mars shows our enthusiasms and passions.  It also represents our aggressive urge. When it is in philosophical Sagittarius, we can become almost fanatical in our beliefs and often feel a deep need to proselytize others to bring them aboard our same wavelength. We can also be very controversial and blunt in our comments, as Mercury governs our speech and Mars in Sagittarius acts very spontaneously.

Additionally, in their wedding chart, Venus, the planet of love and marriage, was in fiery, adventurous Aries conjoined with dutiful Saturn.  Venus-Saturn ties often indicate “karmic relationships” in which we feel a deep sense of responsibility, obligation, and loyalty to each other.  Saturn is regarded as the “Lord of Karma” in astrology. This is because he often brings us those more difficult lessons in life that we need to learn and experience in order to evolve and achieve our higher purposes. During the course of their marriage, too, John and Yoko had plenty of Saturnian ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and even an 18-month separation.  Too, in the beginning, their very union alienated them from the public and many Beatles’ fans.  But despite everything, it managed to endure.

On another level, the Venus placement in the sign of Aries showed, too, that the couple would tend to enjoy “active pursuits” and “pioneering endeavors” that would garner attention to themselves. Venus not only rules love relationships, it also rules what we love to do.  Aries as a sign focuses much of its attention on its own self-identity and self-discovery.

Actually, Venus in Aries can contain elements of narcissism to it – making us a little too much enthralled with our own self-image. Of course, when John and Yoko were together, they were both young and still discovering themselves, both individually and as a couple.  And they were both very famous, so they probably wanted to naturally capitalize on their fame and use it as a springboard to further their more noble, more  impersonal causes for the collective.
