Cosmic Weather:

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”  Ernest Hemingway

With a potent New Moon taking place today in “tweaking” Virgo (6:37 am), the sign of health, work, and service, there’s likely a growing momentum occurring now to roll out the “new and improved” versions of things (including ourselves!), in the days ahead. In general, this is always an excellent lunation period for any kind of problem-solving, for practical negotiations, for DIY projects, for decluttering, detoxifying, editing, for implementing new health regimes, adding new habits, for perfecting our skills.

This New Moon also finds a total of five planets (a stellium) in corrective Virgo (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars), which suggests a strong ability to focus or concentrate on the extraneous details (or the infrastructure) of our daily lives to discern how everything is – or isn’t – working. Also, for those of us who seem to have more difficulty focusing on the small stuff, just the sheer act of getting more organized – a Virgo trait – is often a very good way to become more aware of all the pivotal minutiae circulating around.

Both Mars (assertion) and Venus (wants) are also conjunct the Sun and the Moon now, with Mercury (communication) not very far away, so there’s a great deal of single-minded motivation, determination, and energy to actively pursue our desires, or whatever it is that we want to attract (including love and romance). There may also be a heightened ability to work in a very precise, orderly, and methodical manner, and to communicate with others on more of a factual (or reality-based) level.

The Mars conjunction (to the Sun and Moon) can also indicate a potential for displaying real courage or bravery, depending upon the situation, as well as possibly a good amount of competitiveness and wanting to do things our own way. The Mars-Sun energy will also be exact, for the next few days, and in health and research-minded Virgo, there’s a possibility that some notable discoveries or advances will be made (perhaps in healing or medicine). Mars-Sun aspects, particularly the conjunction, have a marked trailblazing quality to them, which can be very invigorating to experience. Perhaps, too, if there’s been something you’ve wanted to try but have been hesitant to do so, for whatever reason, now might be a good time give it a whirl, or to at least take a first baby step, in that direction.

Altogether, too, there are eight planets in the grounding earth signs, which strongly suggests that there’s special finesse or talent now in dealing with the tangible affairs of the world (especially money, security, and career). It’s also an excellent period for strategically planning the use or allocation of our resources.

Sometimes, too, a concentration of planets in “shrinking” Virgo is associated with having more of a myopic vision as far as the bigger picture is concerned. However, today’s lunation also has all of the Virgo planets trining Uranus (the planet of innovation and technology), in pragmatic Taurus, suggesting that there’s a real receptivity or fascination now for whatever’s progressive, cutting-edge, or apart from the norm, thereby making it also potentially easier for us to embrace the idea of change or newness.

“Habits also make change possible by freeing us from decision-making and from using self-control.” Gretchen Rubin (author of “Better Than Before”)

Numerologically, today (8-30-2019) also reduces down to both a 3 (Jupiter) and a 5 (Mercury), so there’s some optimism, desire for sociability, and a feeling of expansion (the 3 side) as well as a good measure of nimbleness and curiosity at play (5).

*All times EDT

On This Day in History: Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, was born on August 30, 1797, in London, England. (Frankenstein was an instant bestseller on publication in 1818 and has long been regarded as a masterpiece of suspense, a classic of nineteenth-century Romanticism and Gothic horror, and the prototype of the science fiction novel. From Wikipedia)

Astrologically, in the sky that day (and in Shelley’s birth-chart), there was a stellium in “tinkering” Virgo (like today), with adventurous, initiator Mars newly-deposited at 0 degrees of Virgo and in a near-exact opposition to darkhorse Pluto, Lord of the Underworld. (Mars-Pluto energy can also give a fascination with the macabre.) The life-giving Sun was also deposited in analytical Virgo and conjunct inventive, ingenious Uranus (possibly helpful for writing science fiction; Sci-Fi writer, Ray Bradbury, also had a Sun-Uranus opposition aspect in his chart).

“Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.” Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

Happy New Moon Blessings!

Astrology August 16, 2019: Mercury Square Uranus, Elvis Presley’s Death

Cosmic Weather:

Just because something is new doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better; however, birthing new ideas can often make us feel more alive inside, more rejuvenated, more hopeful.

With intellectual Mercury in creative Leo squaring “our inner Einstein” Uranus – the planet of genius in solidifying Taurus today (1:07 pm), it’s possible the charitable muses above will be doling out to us a few, original, powerhouse thoughts, ideas, or perceptions that we can use to add to or fortify our nifty cognitive toolkits. Uranus is considered to denote the superconscious mind and is also thought to be the “higher octave” of Mercury, while Mercury represents “the conscious mind, conscious awareness.” Uranus is also associated with flashes of intuition or sudden knowing.

Of course, just like with everything else in life, there’s also potentially a rogue element or shadow side to today’s Mercury-Uranus square. Such as rebellious or cantankerous behavior, experiencing mental restlessness, engaging in impulsive decision making. Uranus also symbolizes dissent or protest, challenges to the status quo. It may be a time when we’re more inclined to speak up about issues that appear to affect our sense of personal freedom or liberty.

On another level, on Mercury-Uranus days we often hear things Mercury)that really take us by surprise because they’re so unexpected Uranus.

Too, with Uranus in material Taurus, it’s possible that there could be some surprises or twists on the financial front, or regarding things that sustain us or make us feel more secure, including our values.

Action planet Mars is also at 29 degrees of authoritative Leo (a critical degree), today and tomorrow (entering Virgo, early Sunday morning). When Mars is at the end of the sign, there’s often a strong motivating desire to give something a “final push” to bring it about, especially if we’re already perceived to be close to the finish line. With Mars in proud Leo, we may also feel a potent desire to exercise our personal power now.

Meanwhile, the Moon is now in meditative Pisces, suggesting we make some time, along the way, for inner reflection or prayer. Numerologically, too, today (8-16-2019) reduces down to both a (dreamy) 7 and (self-mastery) 9. Sort of re-iterating this Piscean theme for turning inward as a way to renewal now.

“I think making mistakes and discovering them for yourself is of great value, but to have someone else to point out your mistakes is a shortcut of the process.” – Shelby Foote

*All times EDT

On This Day in History: On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley (“the King”) died at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee.

Astrologically back then, two days earlier, on August 14, there had been a New Moon in “kingly” Leo, (the sign of entertainment), with both the Sun and Moon in Leo in a tight conjunction to sobering Saturn, the Lord of Karma.

“Some people tap their feet, some people snap their fingers, and some people sway back and forth. I just sorta do ’em all together, I guess.” Elvis Presley

Astrology August 14, 2019: Sun Conjunct Venus, Quincunx Pluto

Cosmic Weather:

A warm, amiable Sun-Venus conjunction in creative Leo (ideally) magnifies our wants and desires, our popularity, our artistic expression, our orientation towards cooperation, love, harmony, and celebration. This is a very lovely influence that can really make us want to beautify our life, our appearance, our surroundings.

Natally, when people have Sun conjunct Venus in their charts, they’re usually very adept at being able to smooth things over, to make connections with others. Occurring in Leo, too, there can be quite a bit of flair for fashion, for drama or the theatrical, for attracting attention to ourselves in a potent, charming, or charismatic way.

On the flip side, however, this same Sun-Venus conjunction also forms an awkward quincunx to investigative Pluto in “no-frills” (Saturn-ruled) Capricorn. Which could potentially serve to temporarily arouse our suspicions or find us probing deeper into the shadows. Looking for what may be broken, disturbed, or, seemingly, just “not quite right,” below the surface. This is not necessarily a bad thing – maybe more like performing a maintenance check or a diagnostic on our system after sensing something might be a bit off.

The waxing Moon is also in emotionally detached Aquarius today, which can help us to see things in a more intellectual light. This position for Luna can also incline us to be more experimental or non-conforming in our approach to matters. Sometimes, too, with Luna here we’re more willing to espouse or rally behind social or humanitarian causes.

Too, since we have a Full Moon in Aquarius tomorrow, we may really be getting a strong sense of things building up or culminating now. Full Moons tend to supply us with more illumination, or greater awareness. Occurring in Aquarius, too, perhaps we’re trying to figure out now our unique, special place in the world (Sun in Leo), where we can really shine but also, at the same time, give back something meaningful to the collective (Moon in Aquarius).

Numerologically, the day (8-14-2019) reduces down to a 5 (Mercury-ruled) and 7 (Neptune-ruled), so we do have a pronounced “changeability” or “back and forth” vibe going on, and a boost of mental stimulation. But also a strong desire for dreams and inspiration.

“And I am all the things I have ever loved: scuppernong wine, cool baptisms in silent water, dream books and number playing.” – Toni Morrison

On This Day in History: On August 14, 1965, Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” hits #1.

Hope it’s a good one!

COSMIC WEATHER:

“The most confused you will ever get is when you try to convince your heart and spirit of something your mind knows is a lie.” – Shannon L. Adler

Our Monday gets underway with the waxing Moon in “keeping it real” Capricorn! Employing tried-and-true methods or strategies that have delivered solid results for us in the past may feel like the best way to play the day.

Luna will also be having its monthly meetup with intense Pluto this evening (6:11 pm), which may prime us to go after our desires with increased passion or focus.

Moon-Pluto energy is also viewed as a good time for de-weeding; taking out the trash; recycling or renovating; going antiquing/treasure-hunting; performing archeological digs.

Numerologically, today (8-12-2019) reduces down to both a “3” and a “5”. The “3” aspect suggests some reverence for traditionalism or history. It can also incline us to want to ambitiously climb to the top of the totem pole! The “5” element also potentially injects an impulsive quality to the day, and a changeability.

*All times EDT

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

On August 12, 1972, the last American combat troops leave Vietnam, marking the end of direct U.S. military involvement in the conflict.

Quite notably that day, astrologically, assertive Mars – symbolizing war and the military – was at 29 degrees of authoritative Leo and forming an exact waning trine to philosophical Jupiter Rx at 29 degrees of futuristic Sagittarius; Sagittarius is also associated with foreign lands or cultures.

In astrology, when planets are at 29 degrees of a sign they are viewed as potentially being at a critical juncture, including suggesting more of an urgency to wrap things up.

The waning trine itself also points to matters (the Martian military campaign) nearing an end and, correspondingly, moving in a new direction (Jupiter).

Too, with the end of U.S. combat forces in Vietnam, Pluto, symbolizing dramatic makeovers and shifts in power and focus, was notably enthroned at zero degrees/or the initiating degree of diplomatic, balancing Libra.

“Television brought the brutality of war into the comfort of the living room. Vietnam was lost in the living rooms of America — not on the battlefields of Vietnam.” – Marshall McLuhan

Astrology August 10, 2019: Sun Quincunx Neptune, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” Film

COSMIC WEATHER:

Sometimes things are easy to detect. Other times, it can feel like a struggle to perhaps see what may be right in front of us; as if we have blinders on or something.

Today, with the Sun in bright, shiny Leo, but awkwardly aligned with foggy, dissipating Neptune (8:44 pm), there’s a chance that we’ll be experiencing more of the latter. Too, if we do feel a bit off, doing some breathwork or engaging in other kinds of grounding activities may help to quickly re-center us now.

Sun-Neptune is also potentially great for any creative, artistic, or imaginative outlets. Too, this energy can serve to rachet up our empathy.

It’s also the 10th day of the month, or a “one day,” numerologically. Which suggests there’s quite a bit of power or dynamism to the day as the life-giving Sun rules the number one. Normally, on “one” days, we feel like initiating something new, or at least putting our usual routines on the back burner for the time being.

*All times EDT

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

On August 10, 1960, the Los Angeles premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic horror film “Psycho” starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh is held. The gripping, intense shower scene in the movie is considered to be one of the best-known scenes in all of cinema.

Not surprisingly, the heavens above, that day, were seemingly echoing the movie’s debut as energizer Mars, at 5 degrees of cerebral Gemini, was exactly square to suspenseful Pluto – the grand master of the macabre – at 5 degrees of perfecting Virgo.

On the shadow side, challenging Mars-Pluto aspects can sometimes bring forth suppressed emotions, especially anger or rage.

Meanwhile, expansive Jupiter was also retrograde in visionary Sagittarius and applying to a flowing, two-degree trine to Uranus deposited in Hollywood Leo. Jupiter-Uranus aspects are often linked, among other things, with giving rise to works of genius as well as innovation.

Hope it’s a good one!

Astrology August 8, 2019: Venus Trines Jupiter, Nixon’s Presidential Nomination

COSMIC WEATHER:

“May you never become so cynical that you let a star fall without its wish.” – Nicole Lyons

Our power of attraction, the planet Venus, is in magnanimous Leo. It is also trine to abundant Jupiter Rx in philanthropic Sagittarius.

Generally, when Venus and Jupiter align there’s thought to be more of a desire to lift ourselves up, on all levels, both individually and collectively. There’s also more of a perceived desire for seeking out pleasurable pursuits or activities.

Interestingly, neuroscience studies have also shown that the brain releases the happiness hormones – endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin – when we’re having a good time or feeling relaxed and confident.

Waxing Luna will also be wrapping up her stay in emotionally charged Scorpio, this afternoon (4:34 pm), at which time she’ll be flitting into home on the range Sagittarius, where she’ll be scoping out greener pastures. The inspirational Sagittarius Moon backdrop is also a perfect setting for allowing the more voluminous Venus-Jupiter energy (exact at 4:27 pm) to work its golden, fairy-dust magic.

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” – W.B. Yeats

***

Numerologically, today – August 8 – is also an “8” day and reduces down to a “1” when you add up the numbers for the day, month, and year. In Chinese culture, the number 8 is associated with wealth, fortune or prosperity.

Astrologically, the number 8 is linked with the planet Saturn and responsibility. The number one is also ruled by the Sun and portends leadership ability and creative new beginnings.

Overall, an 8-1 day suggests great determination and know-how to forge through any obstacles to get to where you want to be. In the Tarot, these two numbers are also symbolized by the Magician Card (One) and the Strength Card (8).

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” W.B. Yeats

All times EDT

On This Day in History: On August 8, 1968, the Republican Convention in Miami Beach, Florida nominates Richard Nixon (b. January 9, 1913) for US President.

Astrologically, that day, transiting Mars, the energizer, was newly installed in leadership Leo, at 2 degrees of the sign (in Nixon’s 11th house of friends and groups).

Transiting Saturn, the Lord of Karma, was also stationing retrograde in assertive, self-willed Aries, the sign of new beginnings.

Transiting Mars in Leo was also exactly opposite Nixon’s natal Uranus, the planet of change and the unexpected, at 2 degrees of Aquarius (in Nixon’s fifth house of self-expression). Mars-Uranus aspects sometimes instantly change the world or landscape around us, often in radical or game-shifting ways.

Too, Nixon had transiting Pluto, symbolizing rebirth and transformation, conjunct his Virgo Ascendant or First House (the house of personal new beginnings). Pluto also symbolizes the urge for power and control and conjunct the Ascendant it can mark a time when we become more persuasive or influential in the world.

On the shadow side, too, Pluto can potentially make us more controlling, especially when we may feel a loss of power.

(Nixon would later resign as President on August 9, 1974, or forty-five years ago, tomorrow, when the transiting South Node in Gemini was exactly conjunct his Midheaven or career house.

In the sky that day, too, transiting Mars in corrective Virgo was separating from an exact square to dissolving Neptune (the planet of deception) in politician-ruling Sagittarius. Mars-Neptune aspects are often linked with acts of surrender or capitulation.

That aspect also really matched the uncertainty or “up in the air” quality that America was going through at the time. Challenging Mars-Neptune aspects are often described as being similar to having a rug pulled out from under you.

“Only if you have been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.” – Richard Nixon

Calvin Coolidge becomes 30th US President on August 3, daily astrology, daily horoscope, getting organized, infrastructure, Moon in Virgo, numerology

Cosmic Weather:

With the Waxing Moon in organizing, corrective Virgo today, it’s an excellent time to take a step back and critique where and how we have been employing our energies, as of late. And, accordingly, to evaluate how we may be able to more effectively streamline our affairs in order to maximize our chances for success in the future.

Coming to our aid here, we also have Luna trining “no frills” Saturn, this morning (10:02 am), potentially allowing us to capitalize or build upon our wisdom and experience in a very pragmatic way. Moon-Saturn can also make us more aware of the finite nature of time (which Saturn rules) and the importance of not wasting our time as well as our resources.

Later, Lady Luna also throws a potent trine to transformational Pluto (7:34 pm), which may inspire us to consider or at least ponder, making some sweeping changes to our life, especially in areas where we may be stuck. Moon-Pluto aspects are also excellent for generating deep emotional insights that can be very healing.

Today is also a “3 day”, numerologically, so our creative juices are flowing, bubbling over.

“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.” Kurt Vonnegut

*All times EDT

On This Day in History: On August 3, 1923, Vice President Calvin Coolidge (b. July 4, 1872) becomes the 30th US President upon the death of Warren G. Harding (who died the day before).

Astrologically, in the sky then, pioneering Mars was separating (one degree) from an exact conjunction to the empowering Sun in leadership Leo. Mars-Sun aspects often signal or bring about changes in rulership or authority. The Sun, at 10 degrees of Leo, was also exactly square to expansive Jupiter (the ruler of politicians), at 10 degrees of transitioning Scorpio.

“Don’t you know that four-fifths of all our troubles in this life would disappear if we would just sit down and keep still?” Calvin Coolidge
