“Be not the slave of your own past – plunge into the sublime seas, dive deep, and swim far, so you shall come back with new self-respect, with new power, and with an advanced experience that shall explain and overlook the old.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Animal, Aquatic, Brown, Eye, Eyes, Face

Today’s Energy:

With “perceptive” Pluto stationing direct today in “self-mastering” Capricorn, we are slowly but surely beginning to emerge from a visitation of our inner caverns, so to speak, with Pluto symbolically representing the subconscious realm of our being. During Pluto’s five-month retrograde period, hopefully we had a chance to duly reflect upon, among other things, some of our deeper motivations, our stronger desires or passions, our personal sense of power in the world, as well as our longing for renewal or rebirth.

Also, the outline or sketch of the personal path that we hope to embark upon – in the days and weeks ahead – in order that we may live with greater integrity with our true self, is also possibly starting to appear before us now with sharper clarity or resolution. Pluto is thought to correspond specifically with our sense of “individual destiny” or “mission in life,” which we may very well be feeling more of now.

On a collective level, Pluto stationing direct can also be a time when we witness major power shifts, or see a redistribution of power or influence. We may also see the ability of certain events or people to powerfully shape or capture the emotions of the masses, which Pluto rules.

“initiating” Mars, newly-installed in “perfecting” Virgo, late yesterday, is also squaring “restrictive” Saturn tonight (9:12 pm EDT), in “philosophical” Sagittarius, suggesting that we may have to temporarily deal with delays or impasses with some of our plans now. Mars-Saturn energy is often linked with endings, or having to possibly bow out of projects, especially those with which our ego is highly identified with, including perhaps finally seeing “the writing on the wall” about something.

At the very least, there is a more serious tenor to this Mars-Saturn energy, as well as a deeper awareness of the finite nature of our lives, along with the realization that we must not waste our allotted time on the planet, with Saturn governing time and mortality. The Greek philosopher Diogenes Laertius once said, “Time is the most valuable thing that a man can spend.”

Questions for Today: Who are you becoming? What issues have been coming up for you lately? What do you believe is your special destiny?

Enjoy your Friday! 🙂

Astrology August 22, 2011: Leo Sun Opposes Dissolving Neptune

COSMIC WATCH:

“Derive happiness in oneself from a good day’s work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us.” Henri Matisse

The empowering Sun, at the tail end of Leo the Lion, is forming its annual opposition to “foggy” Neptune in “change-oriented” Aquarius.  While Sun-Neptune can spark our creative juices, since Neptune governs our imagination, it can also, on the shadow side, blur or obscure matters, making it more difficult for us to see clearly the true nature of things. Accordingly, we are wise to commandeer our earthly beings more cautiously now and also make sure we take time to perform our sacred due diligence in matters that are important to us, particularly with respect to any new beginnings.

Too, we have the Leo Sun making a semi-square to restrictive Saturn, in partnership Libra, perhaps opening the door for us to further buildup our glorious supply of patience, especially when we are dealing with other people.  With Sun-Saturn we are often faced with limitations (and endings) and have to use our noodle to figure out how to maneuver or rise above them. Fortunately for us today, the Moon is in intellectual Gemini where she adores mental gymnastics. She also helps us out in the flexibility department in this sign.

“Ingenuity, plus courage, plus work, equals miracles.” Bob Richards

In the News:  On the eve of the proud Leo Sun’s opposition to nebulous Neptune, in group-oriented, defiant Aquarius, rebels opposed to Colonel Gadhafi’s regime stormed into Tripoli on Sunday. The military unit that was supposed to guard Gadhafi and the capital city reportedly surrendered to rebel forces, an indication that Gadhafi’s regime is “crumbling,” according to news sources.

Historically, and symbolically, the planet Neptune is linked with surrender. Neptune is also known as the “Great Dissolver,” often making our ties to matters more tenuous (“crumbling” of Gadhafi regime). The Sun also symbolizes world leaders.

Too, the Sun’s placement at the very last degree of authoritative Leo suggests more of an urgency, or precarious state, for those in power now. Also, the Libyan rebels  would be symbolically denoted by Neptune in Aquarius, with Neptune in Aquarius signaling change and a new order of things. Neptune also helps to to add a “surrealistic” tone to matters. Gadhafi has reportedly been in power for more than 40 years in Libya and now we all sense it is coming to an end. The more “denying” Sun-Saturn aspect now, too, could signify an “end to a reign of power” for a head of state.

We also have Saturn and Neptune forming a more challenging 135-degree aspect in the sky now, which will be exact in a couple days. This backdrop influence (which lasts for several days) can indicate a major erosion or undermining (Neptune) of existing structure (Saturn). Of course, we additionally have recalcitrant Uranus square controlling Pluto in governmental Capricorn, which also helps to topple despotic (Pluto) regimes.

On another level, in wake of the Saturn-Neptune aspect, we may want to pay closer attention to issues concerning oil, and also maybe the sea, this week, as Neptune governs both of these things. Too, Libya is home to a key portion of the world’s sweet crude oil supply.

Enjoy your Monday!

COSMIC WATCH:

“That rolls to its appointed end.” William Cullen Bryant

A perfect day for winding down our affairs as we have a void-of-course Moon in sentimental Cancer and a New Moon in sunny Leo tomorrow. Mental Mercury in analytical Virgo also opposes fuzzy Neptune in fishy Pisces making decision-making possibly more convoluted today. When Neptune’s ray is activated matters tend to get obscured and we may be missing key facts. However, this same aspect could be a boon for creative types as Neptune governs our imagination. Neptune also presides over film, photography, dancing and aquatic activities.

A note of caution: Mercury goes retrograde August 2nd! A period when we often revisit and or reverse our previous decisions or plans. Something to keep in mind now.

Enjoy your Friday!

COSMIC WATCH:

“I deepen my experience of God through prayer, meditation, and forgiveness.” Marianne Williamson

The waning Moon remains in yielding, meditative Pisces encouraging us to “go with the flow” instead of offering up any formidable resistance – although, we may need to consciously guide ourselves in order to stay on track with things.

Early afternoon, the Moon’s trine to sweet Venus in caring Cancer (2:43 pm EDT) ideally helps to strengthen our bonds with loved ones. Venus is also sesquiquadrate to wounded healer Chiron suggesting that this may be a good time to placate old wounds.

The Moon’s square to restless Mars, in communicator Gemini (4:45 pm EDT), also gifts us with an opportunity to learn how to “hold our tongue,” lest we get sent to the back of the classroom.

“Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.” Charles Dickens

Famous People with Moon in Pisces: Elvis Presley, Jerry Seinfield, Michael Jackson, Prince, Hillary Clinton, Winona Ryder

Events in the News: With Luna steeped in her “waning phase” and cloaked in “dissolving” Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, we are also collectively seeing the “passing away” of some familiar structures now:

Some “endings” perhaps worth noting now:

1)  The Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to undock from the International Space Station today for the last time in the history of the space shuttle program.

2) “Borders,” the 2nd largest U.S. bookstore chain, announced yesterday that it’s liquidating all of its remaining bookstores and idling some 11,000 workers.

3) U.S. General Petraeus gave up command of the Afghan war Monday to head the CIA. Of course, the U.S. government is also taking measures to reportedly draw down the number of troops in Afghanistan.

4) News Corp head, Rupert Murdoch, whose media empire has been seemingly imploding, as of late, is slated to testify before lawmakers in the U.K. today about the alleged “phone hacking” scandal. Interestingly, this scandal investigation really began heating up shortly after warrior Mars launched into communication Gemini in late June (Gemini rules both telephones and the news media).

Enjoy your Tuesday!

COSMIC WATCH:

“The Moon shuts off the beams of the Sun as it passes across it, and darkens so much of the earth as the breath of the blue-eyed Moon amounts to.” Empedocles

The New Moon today at 11 degrees of communicative, idea-minded Gemini (5:03 pm EDT) is also a Solar Eclipse. It is the first of three eclipses that we will be having over the course of the next month (the others are June 15th and July 1st). While a New Moon symbolizes new beginnings, a Solar Eclipse denotes endings, so we will be experiencing a mix of both here.

Eclipses are traditionally viewed in astrology as potentially high-impact events with their influence lasting for up to six months, although the “biggest pop” from them often occurs right when they happen, or within a few days before or after the event. In my own life, for instance, I have had major events happen on eclipse days, so I have learned to dole out to them a healthy level of respect and reverence.

We also need to be mindful of the house (or area of life) in our personal horoscope that this Solar Eclipse is falling in, to get a greater awareness for its meaning and possible impact, as that sphere of life is being highly activated now. Also, very importantly, we need to note whether or not the lunation is making aspects to other planets or to important angles (ASC, MC) in our chart. If it is, chances are good that we will be feeling more of the potency of the Eclipse. Especially sensitized now are planets or points in the chart at 8 to 14 degrees of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).

Today’s lunation is harmoniously trine to responsible, stabilizing Saturn, with Saturn representing the safety or security urge, so it could be that overall conditions in our lives may improve, that we are able to advance or forge ahead, to some degree, or that some of our pet projects may finally be able to gain traction. We may also just feel more self-confident about our ability to handle difficult or problematic situations now, as Saturn can give us firm resolve and determination, which, at the end of the day, can be a huge thing (“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he,” from the Book of Proverbs).

Saturn is also in partnership Libra, the sign of diplomacy and also where it is exalted, suggesting the period ahead may be constructive for effectively broaching our more serious (Saturn) relationship issues, including discussing perhaps matters of commitment. (On a collective level, this Eclipse may also be a very good period for attempts at waging diplomacy between countries.)

It may also be an especially good time for having “boundary-type (Saturn) discussions” (Gemini) in which we detail to others what our needs and wants are within the confines of our relationships (Libra), in an effort to have more meaningful, healthy unions that function better. Saturn, on the whole, is concerned with matters of self-preservation, fortifying our positions, and creating practical efficiencies, and these things are often achieved through honest, serious confrontations, in which we speak the truth. Discerning Saturn helps foster within us a more mature, insightful outlook, as well as bestowing a modicum of wisdom and caution based on our experiences.

The lunation in communicator Gemini also helps to kindle a sincere desire for discussion, learning, and sharing our thoughts and ideas, and it can also inspire brilliance within us. Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, will also be exiting slower, more deliberate Taurus for Gemini, the day after this Eclipse, which should also help to boost or speed up our cognitive abilities.

Saturn has also been retrograde since January but is getting ready to move direct in Libra on June 12th, another indicator that we may be able to leap forward with our goals, especially in the relationship realm, after, hopefully, knowing more about  what we want for ourselves (Saturn retrograde is a time of reflection). If we are also seeking to expand our scope of close relationships, or business ties, Saturn’s enabling ray may be a positive factor in helping attract to us more anchoring type individuals who help us to feel more grounded. Saturn specifically denotes older, more experienced type persons, or at least, more serious types.

In some cases, too, today’s Eclipse may set the stage for the pruning away (Saturn) of ties (and situations) that are no longer needed, or that have run their natural course. Of course, sometimes these relationships can also come to an end against our wishes.

Perhaps a positive assist and inspiration here for dealing with any difficult endings or transitions now is the flexible Gemini Moon itself, which helps to give us greater adaptability with respect to coping with change. The intellectual Moon in Gemini is less weighed down by emotional baggage and has a much easier time detaching from its feelings (the trine to Saturn also again helps us to psychologically pare down).

Gemini perpetually seeks out new experiences as new options for growth. In the body, Gemini fittingly rules the lungs and the breath. The constant inhaling and exhaling process perfectly depicts the restless, curious, interactive nature of this sign, and also addresses and showcases how many of us may be feeling now with this Eclipse, that we must keep moving, taking in new sights and new ideas, exhaling yesterday’s experiences, viewpoints and opinions, as old news, no longer relevant.

In general, today’s Solar Eclipse in “I think” Gemini is a big boon for any writing, reading, or research projects, as Gemini loves disseminating and collecting information. It also favors public speaking engagements, stand up comedy acts, travel (especially short trips), involvement in social media activities, events with siblings, taking or teaching new classes, learning new languages, expanding our vocabulary, purchasing phone equipment, and attending to transportation (Gemini) matters.

Famous people with Moon in Gemini: Bette Davis, Roseanne Barr, George Carlin, Goldie Hawn, Fred Astaire, Gwyneth Paltrow.

NEWS UPDATE: Interestingly, on the eve of this Gemini Eclipse, a big communication (Gemini) news story has just come out about cell phones and how they may possibly cause brain cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) said some cell phones are as dangerous as lead and engine exhaust. The FCC and FDA, however, say they are safe. (From KABC Los Angeles, link to story down below).

Also, more communications news: Today Sprint Nextel Corp reportedly filed a petition with the FCC to block AT&T and T-Mobile USA’s merger plans (bizjournals.com)

Enjoy this exciting Eclipse Day! Set powerful intentions.

“Life has its own hidden forces which you can only discover by living.” Soren Kierkegaard

There’s a Full Moon at 26 degrees of Scorpio today (7:10 am EDT). Briefly, a Full Moon represents a culmination or peaking of awareness. With a Full Moon we are often more privy to revelations, as we have “more light” by which to see things. The volume on our emotional responses (Moon) may also be turned up.

Scorpio, as a quality of experience, is associated with intensity of expression, and also extremes of behavior. It is a more complex sign to figure out. The natural ruler of Scorpio is Pluto, which is known for its’ laser-like focus. When the Moon is in Scorpio, there is a greater depth of feeling and passion to us, and consequently we tend to react more powerfully to matters. Unfortunately, emotional outbursts can also manifest, if we are not careful to rein ourselves in. The Scorpio Moon additionally likes power and to be in charge, which means on the shadow side, we often need to simultaneously subdue our feelings of control or manipulation. Jealousy and possessiveness are also two other issues that many of us characteristically wrestle with when the Moon is deposited here.

Scorpio as a zodiacal sign stands guard over those areas of life that are normally hidden from view, such as our mind’s subconscious. It also governs intimacy and sex, or what is often expressed privately “behind closed doors.” Scorpio, as the opposite sign to money and possession Taurus, additionally depicts our attitudes concerning the sharing of our material resources with others, and is related to such mundane things as joint bank accounts and jointly-held possessions.

Since Scorpio presides over death (or the dissolution of form) and rebirth, it is also connected to insurance and estate matters. It also rules taxes, surgery, and regenerative healing techniques. Scorpio is furthermore linked to psychic development, channeling, and the spirit world, and to metaphysical matters in general. Its intrinsic approach is always to “go deep” and ponder mysteries wherever they may be found.

With the Full Moon falling in Scorpio, it could be that some or many of the areas above may be more highlighted now. We are also more likely to be in touch with our deepest, most passionate desires (Scorpio) or innermost feelings at this time. We may also have to address issues from our buried past (with Scorpio they often suddenly rise to the surface). Or possibly face the truth about things that we have been avoiding. Again, too, the Scorpio Full Moon can easily solicit overreactions from us, especially if we are not mindful of our behavior.

Too, the Full Moon now could mark transitions or endings, or pivotal turning points (Scorpio). This Scorpio Full Moon is also making a challenging square to vague, dissolving Neptune in surrendering Pisces. It is additionally forming a tight quinqunx (adjustment aspect) to excessive, boastful Jupiter in impulsive Aries (sign of the military), cautioning us not to go overboard or gamble unwisely with our resources. Also, with Neptune’s “veiled ray” on the scene, we may need to guard against being hoodwinked or misled by others. We also would be wise, ourselves, to avoid doing anything that is nefarious or deceitful. Sometimes, too, with Neptune, we unwittingly lead others on by not being in full possession of all the facts. We simply spew out misinformation or just perceive things in a distorted way.

On a more positive note, this lunation still finds Mercury (thoughts) and Venus (beauty and love) side by side in gentle, laid-back Taurus, a very creative sign, and both in a harmonious, compassionate sextile to imaginative Neptune. Taking the time to put into words, our deep love and affection for each other, and engaging in random acts of love and kindness (Neptune), can have very uplifting consequences for all of us now. Also, this aspect is excellent for creating or purchasing art or other objects of beauty, including adding a few “to die for” items to our wardrobe. Too, with the rejuvenating properties of the Scorpio Moon also involved, now would be an ideal time for age-defying beauty treatments or makeovers. Neptune also rules cosmetics, and all manner of masquerade and disguises. It is interesting, too, how when we do alter our outward appearance, we often are related to differently.  In other words, it sets the stage for transforming responses from others.

“Men and women belong to different species, and communication between them is a science still in its infancy.” Bill Cosby 🙂

BTW, I read the other day that Oprah Winfrey (who has facilitated many personal makeovers through her show) plans to tape her talks shows for airing May 23rd and May 24th, on May 17th, at a special arena in Chicago, which will be able to hold over 20,000 of her fans. As an astrologer, of course, I immediately thought about the intensely emotional Scorpio Full Moon in affect and its fitting tie-in with poignant, transforming events, including farewells (endings). Too, with Mercury conjunct Venus in Taurus sextile idealistic, otherworldly Neptune (Neptune also rules the television camera), no doubt that Oprah will be magically “feeling the love” then from her audience and also the camera will be able to masterfully capturing the surreal (Neptune) images of this singular event.

As most of us know who faithfully watch Oprah, she is signing off with her daily syndicated talk show on May 25th, after being on the air for 25 years. She will still be actively involved with broadcasting, however, running her OWN network. Oprah has “Karma Lord” Saturn in Libra transiting at the very top of her chart now, near her tenth house of career. Often a time when one’s highest professional achievement is recorded.

Too, on May 25th, again the last day for the Oprah Show, the Sun will also fascinatingly be in communications Gemini and exactly sextile to futuristic Uranus in new beginnings Aries, signaling that some “big change is in the air.” Uranus also rules television broadcasting. The Sun-Uranus aspect also tends to coincide with more “unusual” or “out of the ordinary” (Uranus) events, and May 25th will, no doubt, go down in broadcast history as the day Oprah officially ended her talk show.  The Moon will also be in reflective, sentimental Pisces that day. We wish Oprah all the best, but at the same time, we will miss her daily show. Afternoons will no longer be the same without her beaming, re-assuring presence lighting up the television screen.

“Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.” Garrison Keillor

“Cosmic Word of The Day”: Farewell

Definition: 1) an expression of good wishes at parting 2) leave-taking; departure

Origin: 1325-75; ME far wel

COSMIC WEATHER:

Saturn’s getting ready to bid farewell to Virgo for Libra.  He won’t be back in Virgo until 2037, so for some of us this may be the last time that Saturn is in Virgo in our lifetimes. Kind of sad, when you think about it. That whole “growing old” Saturnian process.

Saturn’s bags are all meticulously packed. His merry little departure into matrimonial Libra occurring tomorrow (11:08 am EDT).  He will blissfully stay in Libra until October 2012.

All Saturn really has left to do now in Virgo is clean the toilet bowls and maybe do a bit of spot vacuuming. He wants to make sure that he gets the full rent deposit back that he put down when he moved into Virgo back in September of 2007.  Characteristically, frugal Saturn will not rest until ever red cent is returned to him and fully accounted for.

Later, while Saturn is disinfecting the toilets, he will nostalgically recollect upon the last time he was in Libra.  Jimmy Carter was still the U.S. President when he entered Libra in September of 1980, but a couple months later, Carter would lose to Ronald Reagan. Saturn is thinking that maybe he personally “jinxed” Carter, as he was on Carter’s Libra Sun when he lost the election.

Saturn is also wondering if any of his old cronies from 30 years ago are still hanging out in Libra. Or, perhaps they’ve already kicked the bucket.  He hasn’t really been in touch with anyone since he left that sign in August of 1983. He doubts if anyone even remembers him, let alone misses him. Saturn’s not exactly, “Mr. Charming.”  Although, there was one girl that Saturn still remembers fondly…

“Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Robert Frost.

In the News:

It’s been a long time coming, but the U.S. Senate is reportedly poised to pass an extension of unemployment insurance today, the very last full day that Karma Lord Saturn is in Virgo, the sign of labor and employment. Saturn in Virgo, the last three years, has correlated with high unemployment around the world. In the U.S., the overall unemployment is 9.7 but is in double-digits for minorities, women, and low-income communities. Long-term unemployment is a grave concern: up to 46 percent of the unemployed have been unemployed for more than 6 months. Saturn is associated with “loss and contraction” and also at the same time “efficiency,” not that the two are always necessarily related, either. With Saturn, however, we usually learn how to get by on less.

The Senate Judiciary Committee  approved Solicitor General Elena Kagan as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court today.  The nomination now goes to the full Senate where confirmation is expected in a few days. This approval today by the Senate Judiciary Committee is coming about just as Saturn gets ready to move into Libra on Wednesday, the sign that rules courts of law, including the Supreme Court.  It appears she will be confirmed by the Senate with Saturn at 0 degrees of Libra.

Also on Monday, there was a “breakthrough announcement” that an anti-AIDS vaginal gel can help prevent and reduce a woman’s chances of getting HIV from an affected partner. The news came with Expansive Jupiter in discovery Aries exactly square Pluto which is associated with medical research as well as sexually-transmitted diseases.  Also we had “News Breaker” Mercury forming an exact 135-link to both Pluto and Jupiter (sesquiquadrate aspect) accentuating the Jupiter-Pluto square.  Jupiter is also still conjunct Scientific, Innovative Uranus in Aries.

With the Sun transiting Cancer quinqunx (adjustment influence) to Neptune (oil and sea) we are also hearing news of possible seepage problems at the BP well, although the seepage may not be connected to the leak. BP continues to conduct pressure tests of its new cap on the well. The only problem here with Neptune, sometimes it’s hard to “see clearly” the true nature of things.
