With a New Moon taking place in non-conforming Aquarius this afternoon (4:04pm), we now have, it would seem, the official go-ahead from the cosmos to boldly depart from our ordinary, prosaic, daily orbital routines, and rocket ourselves in a brand new direction! That is, if we choose to do so, of course! Probably, too, since we’re dealing with more bohemian, eccentric, oddball type of Aquarian energy here, the more obscure the destination that we choose to wobble off to in space, the better! 🙂 Too, I’m almost certain that there’s gotta be a provision in our monthly lunar assignment somewhere that allows us to circle home for a few, each night, so we can watch TV, or maybe walk the dog.

Interestingly, Uranus, the modern day ruler of Aquarius, actually has a very funky orbit around the Sun. Unlike the other planets of the solar system, Uranus is tilted so far that it basically orbits the Sun on its side, with the axis of its spin nearly pointing at the star. While it’s uncertain why Uranus has such a weird orientation, some theorize it’s because Uranus may have collided with another planet, or other smaller objects, shortly after it was formed.

On This Day in History: On February 4, 2004 Mark Zuckerberg (b. 5/14/84)  launches Facebook from his Harvard dormitory room. In the sky that day, pioneering Mars had just shifted into Taurus, and was sextiling technology ruling Uranus in the sign of Pisces. The empowering Sun was also in innovative Aquarius and separating, by one degree, from its annual conjunction with visionary Neptune, the ruler of our imagination. Sun-Neptune is always potentially a time when we can more deftly envision or empower our dreams.

In Zuckerberg’s personal horoscope he also had, among other things, transiting Mars in Taurus exactly opposite his Pluto in Scorpio. Mars-Pluto aspects, in general, can supply us with tremendous determination, willpower, and focus to go after what we want. This is also one of the strongest planetary aspects for transforming the world around us.

Today is a good time for winding things down, in preparation of tomorrow’s New Moon in innovative Aquarius (4:04 pm). New Moons are always synonymous with brand new beginnings, appearing to mirror the death and rebirth phase of the Moon’s monthly cycle. The Moon also shifted from Capricorn into Aquarius this morning (8:03 am), setting the stage for tomorrow’s big event.

Intellectual Mercury is also in Aquarius today and it’s forming a sextile aspect to philosophical Jupiter in Sagittarius (4:55 pm). This is a very nice, mentally stimulating influence that tends to broaden our outlook and make us feel more optimistic. Our judgment may also be better. Conversations with others, in general, can be very inspiring and productive. We can also speak with a greater sense of personal conviction now as we’re, more than likely, channeling our own inner preacher-teacher! Of course, for some of us, if we’re not careful, the Mercury-Jupiter influence can easily morph into our doing copious amounts of bloviating or pontificating! Something, yours truly, happens to know a thing or two about! 🙂 Additionally, the Mercury-Jupiter aspect also favors publishing, writing, travel planning, and business negotiations.

Relationship Venus also exits carefree Sagittarius today for mature-minded Capricorn (5:30 pm), a venue in which the glorious Love Goddess is ready to hunker down and take things to the next level! Also, with Venus in Capricorn now, we’re likely to be much more selective with respect to letting anyone new into our inner circle, especially since we have less of an appetite for frivolity.

The waning Moon is in utilitarian Capricorn, all day, and it will be re-emphasizing yesterday’s potent square aspect from Mars in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn. The Moon will first conjunct Pluto (at 3:13 pm) and then square Mars (at 4:12 pm). It could be that there’s some kind of follow-up to deal with now from the issues that we faced yesterday. Moon conjunct Pluto also generally poises us to feel things very deeply. Sometimes, too, as a result of what comes up for us emotionally now, we are better able to see things in a clearer light. Moon-Pluto aspects are also excellent for any kind of recycling or decluttering projects on the homefront, especially now with the Moon in its waning Crescent phase. Of course, the Moon rules the home or nest and Pluto rules purging and rebirth. The waning Moon cycle is also when we want to empty ourselves of what no longer is serving us in preparation for the upcoming New Moon, which in this case, will be occurring on Monday. The Moon square Mars influence is always potentially a more volatile time for us as we tend to be more reactive, more defensive. So we may want to monitor ourselves accordingly then, in an effort to avert any missteps. Tell our inner warrior to take a hike for a while! 🙂

Today, we also have a very fun Venus-Uranus influence. Venus in Sagittarius is trining Uranus in Aries (at 6:40 pm), traditionally an aspect that tends to loosen our inhibitions, or make us more daring socially and or romantically. We’re potentially more inspired now to embrace out of the ordinary pleasures and activities. There could also be some liberating breakthroughs in the realm of our feelings. We might also discover new ways of relating to others. Or be suddenly attracted to new people in a way that is rather electrifying for us. Interestingly, John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met each other on a day when Venus and Uranus were both conjunct in the sign of entertainment Leo. Of course, we all know the outcome of that iconic union!

Realistic Saturn in Capricorn sextiles transcendent Neptune in Pisces today (9:21 a.m.), a dominant influence for 2019 and an aspect that will be repeated again in mid-June and early November, due to the retrograde cycle. Ideally, Saturn and Neptune teaming up together will help us to build (Saturn) upon our dreams (Neptune) in a more realistic or self-sustaining fashion. That, as a result of this odd couple pairing, we will learn to become more self-accepting (Neptune) of our limitations (Saturn) without freaking out, or feeling guilty, unworthy. Mercury, symbolizing our way of thinking and communicating, forms a superior conjunction with the Sun tonight (9:52 pm), our basic identity, at 10 degrees of detached Aquarius.  This Mercury-Sun aspect is analogous to the illuminating Full Moon, in terms of Mercury’s approximate 116-day cycle. And, just as it is when we have a Full Moon, we are potentially more privy now to gaining greater clarity about matters in our lives. Especially, perhaps, with respect to more clearly understanding our own life purpose (the Sun) in relation to the larger collective (Aquarius). With Mercury conjunct the Sun, our basic sense of self, permeates or colors our thinking and outlook. It could be that we also receive a piece or two of vital information, at this time, or maybe birth a deeper insight, that confirms for us what we had already suspected in the back of our mind. Astrologically and metaphorically speaking, today could easily sub as the poster child for the Nike “Just do it!” slogan as we have action planet, Mars, harmoniously trined to expansive Jupiter, the planet of our dreams, goals, higher vision, and understanding. Jupiter also correlates with luck and prosperity. Whenever these two planets pair up, we’re usually more eager to act on our dreams. Often in bold ways! Perhaps even more so now as Mars and Jupiter are each transiting through their own signs, making their impact potentially more powerful. Mars is in initiating Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, and Jupiter is in visionary Sagittarius, the sign of higher education, learning, and travel. Aries and Sagittarius are also both fire signs. Fire signs are interested in direct, creative expression in the outer world. Mars in the sign of Aries can particularly be very pioneering. Highly adventurous. Very history-making! It’s always interesting to see what transpires, globally or collectively, whenever Mars rolls through Aries.  And, today, too, it’s aligned with abundant Jupiter! it could very well be that we’re on the threshold or verge of some major breakthroughs, or some very exciting discoveries!

Opportunities tend to manifest more quickly now, but they do need to be acted upon!  Now is not the time for procrastination! For those of us who may also feel less compelled to tackle any big stuff, at the moment, we still could take some kind of action now to further us along on our path.

Today is also excellent potentially for business expansion, negotiations, publishing, promotions, educational matters, travel planning, and involvement in sports. Mars governs sports and athletics, and when it’s aligned with enthusiastic Jupiter there can be an extra strong desire to break or set performance records. One other thing about Mars-Jupiter energy: When it’s taken to the extreme, it often becomes the epitome of fanaticism! Of course, in sports, fanaticism is probably an advantage, at least to a degree, because with it we’re likely more driven to win or succeed. But, when it comes to fanaticism in our daily lives, that’s another story, and also where things can get a whole lot dicier or complicated! Especially with respect to the topics of religion and politics. Both of those hot button areas are ruled by the planet Jupiter.

A big mental shift is occurring today! Intellectual Mercury rockets into progressive, innovative Aquarius, the sign of abstract-reasoning. Mercury joins the Sun, already in Aquarius, and it will stay in the sign of the water-bearer until February 10th. Mercury in Aquarius can help us to get unstuck in our thinking and perceptions as, optimally, we’re more open now to entertaining new ideas, considering alternative viewpoints, and to embracing experimentation in general. Mercury the messenger in methodical, practical Capricorn the Goat is getting ready to wind up its stay in Capricorn, where it has been since January 5th. But, before it does that, very early tomorrow, it’s going to square Uranus in Aries today (6:13 am). Mercury and Uranus both have an affinity for one another as Uranus is considered to be the higher octave of Mercury. Uranus, as a transpersonal planet, however, is more focused on our abstract or objective perceptions, while Mercury, as one of the personal planets, tends to be more concerned with such things as speaking, communication, and general awareness itself. Uranus also governs technology.

On those days of the year when Mercury and Uranus align, our thinking is potentially more brilliant, more insightful, more original. We may be able to grasp more complex concepts that might have eluded us before. Our perceptions may be lightning-fast, peppered with sudden intuitions. The Lunar Eclipse in self-expressive Leo the Lion (12:16 am) illuminates our urge to be creative, to shine in our own special way. Today, energizing Mars in pioneering Aries also encounters some formidable resistance resulting from its square aspect to taskmaster Saturn in Capricorn (6:16 am). Slowing down and approaching matters more carefully and thoroughly may be in the cards now, especially if we’re getting clear indications that something’s amiss. We also may need to simply disengage ourselves from some projects, for a while, and decide later, when we’re perhaps more inspired, what our next power moves should be.

The last time that pioneering Mars in Aries squared Saturn in Capricorn, the sign of regulations and government, was back in July of 1990, forming an exact square on July 1st. On that very same day, East and West Germany merged their economies, a very historic event, as that was the first time ever that a capitalist and socialist economy had suddenly become one. Of course, since something like this had never happened before, it took a good while to get all the procedural kinks worked out. Kinda what you’d expect with the more challenging Mars-Saturn imprint.

Interestingly, China’s annual economic growth rate was reported today to be the slowest since 1990, or the last time that Saturn was in the sign of Capricorn. (Wall Street Journal)

Heading into Monday’s Lunar Eclipse Full Moon in Leo, the energies are very strong and powerful today! We have a trio of major aspects now:

Venus in Sagittarius trines Mars in Aries ( 11:50 am): Venus and Mars are billed as the Cosmic Lovers so the prospects for romance are elevated today! 🙂 In general, this is very playful energy. A good day to simply enjoy ourselves. To engage in whatever activities are fun for us, that bring us pleasure. It’s an excellent time to express our emotions, to show others what’s in our heart. There’s a nice give and take now between the sexes. This influence helps our interpersonal relationships, overall. “Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures.” H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Mercury conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn (3:01 pm): This is one of the best aspects for concentration! It really aids us in focusing on the matter at hand, thereby, potentially increasing our understanding. The truth is also more apparent to us now. On the flip side here, though, sometimes we can get so focused on something that it becomes an obsession with us. That can be when the Mercury-Pluto energy becomes problematic.  Yours truly was born with Mercury-Pluto in a tight square so I can personally vouch for its intensity! Mercury-Pluto can also help us to unravel mysteries by presenting us with secret information. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of detective Sherlock Holmes, was born with a tight Mercury and Pluto conjunction in Taurus.

Mercury and Pluto conjunct in Capricorn today should be especially good for any planning or organizing activities, including such things as succession planning. We’re also more willing to have conversations of a serious nature. Our words also seem to deliver more power or impact. “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

(UPDATE: As of today, President Trump also has reportedly banned members of Congress from traveling on U.S. government-owned aircraft during the government shutdown. An interesting Mercury-Pluto in Capricorn headline here, with Mercury ruling travel and Pluto signifying more crisis-related issues. Capricorn also rules government.)

Sun in Capricorn squares Uranus in Aries (8:30 pm): When these two heavenly bodies square off with each other, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for the unexpected! If we’re wise, we’ll also want to make sure we have Plan B ready to whip out today, just in case things don’t go as scheduled.

Sun in conservative Capricorn is more of a traditionalist at heart, usually interested in achieving things like security and status, while Uranus in Aries is more interested in trailblazing and expressing its true indviduality. So we potentially have that type of internal clash going on today. We may want to be careful, however, in not overturning things too quickly now, if we’re unhappy or dissatisfied with our circumstances. Rather it may be better to wait a few days for this more volatile energy to play out. The Moon also continues in flexible, curious Gemini today. An energy that supports the playfulness of the Venus and Mars, the mental probing of the Mercury-Pluto, and the desire for change that the Sun-Uranus is clamoring for.

This Date in History:  On January 18, 1919 the Paris peace conference ( aka the Versailles peace conference) opens to draw up the treaties formally ending the Great War (WWI). At the time, transiting Saturn was at 26 degrees of leadership Leo exactly opposite Uranus at 26 degrees of humanistic Aquarius. Mars was also at 23 degrees of Aquarius, getting ready to conjunct Uranus, and acting as a trigger for the more long-term Saturn-Uranus opposition. Regarding the symbology here, Saturn-Uranus oppositions can signal the ending of established, more rigid structures, a loss of power, and leadership lessons (Saturn in Leo). Uranus represents the rise of a new regime, or a new protocol (Uranus), ideally more reflective or responsive to the needs of the people.

Transiting Mercury in (government-ruling) Capricorn was also in an exact opposition to transformative Pluto in Cancer, that day. A similar influence to what we have going on now with the Mercury-Pluto conjunction. Mercury-Pluto aspects, as mentioned earlier, can signify times when we have to deal with more crisis-related matters; the peace treaty was being created to formally end the destructive WWI. Mercury also rules contracts or agreements.
