A painting by Picasso “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” sold for $106.5 million last night at Christie’s, setting a record as the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at an auction.  Picasso reportedly painted the picture in one day.

What I thought was most notable here astrologically in the horoscope for the auction: The transiting Sun in Taurus exactly square pioneering Mars in Leo.  Taurus rules money and possessions and Mars in Leo represents creative endeavors.  Mars is adventurous and often denotes “firsts” while the square “forces action,” often impulsive action.

With the Sun in the possession sign of Taurus, aligned with risk-taker Mars in creative Leo, there was “more of a mindset” to spend a record amount of money for creative, original artwork.

We also still have Mercury in acquisition Taurus separating from a trine to history-making Pluto in Capricorn, which is a very status-conscious sign.  Of course, owning a Picasso is definitely something of a status symbol.

Transiting Uranus is also at the last degree of Pisces, the sign of the zodiac which rules paintings and artwork. The nature of Uranus is unpredictable and Uranus more often than not ushers in new trends.

Uranus also equates to genius. Positioned at the end of Pisces, as it is now, could it be that Uranus is symbolically paying special homage to one of the most talented, genius artists who ever lived?

Just a thought.

I always regard planets at the end of the signs as having special significance for the collective, usually in a very spiritual and transforming way.

Picasso himself was a transforming figure born under Scorpio.  He also had four planets and Chiron in Taurus in his tenth house of career.  Taurus, ruled by beauty-loving Venus, can be very artistic and talented at creating objects of beauty.

Presently, both transiting Uranus and Neptune are exactly aspecting Picasso’s Pluto in Taurus in his career house.  Pluto rules death and rebirth and is associated with historic precedents – even from beyond the grave.

Also very interesting here, Picasso’s birth chart Pluto was at 29 degrees of Taurus, maybe signaling from the start that he was going to have a huge impact with his artwork on the collective (Pluto rules the masses).  This is again riding on the theory that planets at end degrees have special potency and meaning, reflecting a full maturation of what is originally intended with the sign. Taurus signifying artistic prowess.

Neptune, as ruler of Pisces (and the higher octave of Venus-ruled Taurus) , is also associated with art and paintings.  Neptune, too, interestingly enough, is exactly conjunct Picasso’s 8th house of death now.  This house also pertains to matters of his estate.  Suffice it to say, the beneficiaries to Picasso’s estate are very happy today that Neptune is there, don’t you think? Neptune on the regenerating 8th house, the rich legacy of his painting continues and reaches a new level on the material plane.

“We spend our time searching for security and hate it when we get it.” John Steinbeck.

The Moon’s foray through innovative Aquarius give us an itch to defy convention and try something new, even if it puts some of our security at risk.

The lingering Sun square Mars energy is also suggesting to us that we may want to move outside our comfort zone and expose ourselves to new circumstances.

While the idea of change can be daunting, it can also be empowering.  Sometimes incorporating change into our lives in the form of baby steps is the wisest course of action, until we get more familiar with stepping outside our world.

“All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.” Anatole France.

Often changing our lives for the long-term is simply a matter of changing our daily habits.  We are, after all, essentially what we do every day.

As change agent Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, gets ready to enter Aries, the sign of personal new beginnings, we may want to start thinking about phasing in new habits into our lives.

It usually is most effective if we begin by implementing only one new habit at a time and giving it time to gel.  Usually a 30-day period is what is needed.

It’s best to write down on a piece of paper our reasons, motivations, and strategies for making changes as well as keeping a daily log or journal of our progress.  We also need to remember to reward ourselves for our successes along the way.

“Expelled from individual consciousness by the rush of change, history finds its revenge by stamping the collective unconsciousness with habits and values.” Arthur M. Schlesinger.

“The person who can combine frames of reference and draw connections between ostensibly unrelated points of view is likely to be the one who makes the creative breakthrough.”  Denise Skerejian.

We are more astute in our thinking today and capable of very deep psychological perceptions and mental breakthroughs as Mindkeeper Mercury trines transforming Pluto.

Pluto represents hidden or submerged elements and aligned with Mercury we have aspects of our deepest, innermost being filtering through to the surface now. Our job today is to sift through those inner contents for nuggets of gold.

“Truth like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold.” Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy.

Mercury-Pluto is a healing energy that can help us to get at the root of our thinking with an eye to purging some of our more toxic or self-sabotaging beliefs about ourselves. We are able to eliminate negative thinking when we consciously assign experiences that we don’t like to those negative thoughts.

Moon continues in ambitious Capricorn and the Taurus Sun is applying to a square to Mars in Leo which is exact tomorrow. The urge for power is elevated now. Positive advancement is possible, but we must be careful not to create unnecessary enmity by acting with little or no regard for others.  This especially applies to any financial or possession dealings.

“Leadership is based on inspiration, not domination; on cooperation, not intimidation.” William Arthur Ward.

Enjoy your Monday!

Astrology for May 2 2010, astrology signs, Exxon Valdez 1989 oil spill, having purpose, Mercury trine Pluto, Moon in Capricorn, oil, Saturn conjunct Neptune in Capricorn, Saturn quinqunx Neptune, solving mysteries

“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Theodore Roosevelt.

Moon enters practical Capricorn (6 am EDT).  We want to feel useful and know that our actions are making a difference.  When we are doing what we love, we naturally feel purposeful. Today, is a good day to channel a passion of ours into a meaningful achievement or activity.

Thought-keeper Mercury is also harmoniously aligned (trine) to secretive Pluto.   We are able to penetrate and tap into life’s deepest mysteries and solve a mystery or two in the process. What alluded us before, is now made crystal clear.

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” Albert Einstein.

We are well-advised to stick with things today. To focus our energies for maximum impact. Make it a day of discovery (Pluto) and purpose (Capricorn).

In the News:

The tragedy of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to unfold.

Checking back to the Exxon Valdez oil spill on March 24, 1989 we find that Saturn and Neptune were both conjunct in Capricorn then. Neptune rules the sea and oil. Saturn represents trials and tribulations. It also speaks to us about the importance of owning up to our duties and responsibilities.

Today, interestingly enough, we have Saturn and Neptune together again.  This time Saturn is in perfecting, refining Virgo exactly quinqunx to Neptune in scientific Aquarius.

Saturn is clearly showing us again that we have not been doing right by the sea and harvesting her precious bounty for our practical use, and we are suffering the consequences as a result. Saturn is always keen to point out to us the folly of our ways.

Saturn also represents the principle of conservation and the wise use of our resources. Maybe this quinqunx influence will usher in wiser stewardship practices (Virgo) and will teach us to better use our technological know-how (Aquarius) to live more judiciously in the future?
