Cosmic Weather:

“Normally, we do not so much look at things as overlook them.” – Alan Wilson Watts

This Thursday morning intellectual Mercury conjuncts exacting Saturn in “doubting Thomas” Aquarius (9:34 am) tending to inject more gravity, skepticism, or cautiousness into our thinking, words, or communications. Since our mental focus is perceived to be more narrowed or concentrated now, it can often be a good period to comb through the fine details of matters, particularly, perhaps, looking for the weaknesses or vulnerabilities in things. It is also possible now that we are wrapping up or finishing a final review of something as this conjunction is coming at the 29th (or anaretic) degree of Aquarius.

Today’s annual Mercury-Saturn conjunction is also occurring with love goddess Venus and big-hearted Jupiter affectionately paired up in the sky in adventurous Aries (12:36 am), suggesting that we are also poised and ready for adding something new or bold to our lives that ideally affords us more personal freedom and self-expression. It can also be a propitious time to expand our sphere of relationships as well as to immerse ourselves in social activities.

Later this afternoon, Mercury will also enter dreamy, idealistic Pisces (5:52 pm) for a 16-day stay.

*All times EST

On This Day in History: On March 2, 1965, one of the most popular films of all time, The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, premiers (Academy Awards Best Picture, 1966).

Astrologically, that day, there was a stellium of five planets (plus Chiron) in creative Pisces, the sign associated with filmmaking or visual imagery. Mental Mercury in Pisces was also applying to an exact trine to imaginative Neptune in potent Scorpio, the modern-day ruler of Pisces. Mars in craftsmanship Virgo was also sextile Neptune as well as trine to expansive Jupiter in the financial and artistic sign of Taurus. Mars-Jupiter aspects tend to generate or correlate with mega amounts of enthusiasm and passion for our endeavors, while the Mars-Neptune energy can help us to skillfully manifest our dreams or visions, so that they become very real to us.

Hope it’s a good one! Please be safe and well.

“Dreaming about being an actress, is more exciting then being one.” Marilyn Monroe

Very interesting day in the cosmos! Intellectual Mercury is conjunct serious, ‘Doubting Thomas’ Saturn in Capricorn, expansive Jupiter in Sadge is square fantasy Neptune in fishy Pisces, and the changeable, fluctuating Moon is in restless, action-packed Aries! Yours truly is also writing this blog literally in the dark, by flashlight only, as where I live we’re currently experiencing an ice storm and my house has no power or electricity. All I can say is, “Thank God for Wifi!

So, I’ll try to be brief and to the point here (communicator Mercury is, after all, conjunct stingy, ‘less is more’ Saturn!) – and before my laptop dies, which could be any minute! Today is a time when we may experience some measure of confusion or disillusionment, especially with respect to our dreams, ideals, beliefs, philosophy of life, and expectations (Jupiter-Neptune). It is also easier for us to be misled or hoodwinked, not just by others, but also by ourselves! In other words, it appears that nearly all the collective is operating somewhat in the dark now, metaphorically speaking, and not just moi! (I just love the synchronicity at play here, don’t you?) While Jupiter-Neptune can be seemingly inspiring to us, to some degree, it also does have a legacy of being associated with going overboard, being extravagant, mismanaging or wasting our resources, becoming addicted to pleasures or legal, illegal substances.

We’re actually very fortunate to have that practical, grounded Mercury-Saturn conjunction in aspect today, as a counter to the more disorienting, undermining Jupiter-Neptune energy, as it is probably one of the best planetary influences for providing us with a solid, hands-on reality check. Good for planning and organizing. Optimally, Mercury-Saturn symbolizes discernment, concentration, wisdom, disciplined thought. All qualities that we’re potentially more sorely in need of now as we attempt to navigate through all the fog!

On another level, it’s also possible with the Mercury-Saturn conjunction that we hear more serious news today that ends up putting us into a more reflective mode. On the shadow side, Mercury-Saturn is often linked with despair or depression. Also a scarcity, or fear-mongering mentality.

Anyway, Jupiter square Neptune will also return twice more this year in June and September. So the drama continues. Stay tuned! 🙂

“The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” Rachel Carson.

Enjoy your Sunday! Good luck flying close to the ground today in your oh so pretty ruby red slippers! 🙂

“When we keep our silence we gather our power; when we speak we let loose the concentration of quiet reverie.” Bryant McGill

Today’s Energy:

Communicator Mercury is conjunct “focused” Saturn in “philosophical” Sagittarius (11:57 pm EST), an aspect that is normally regarded as excellent for our power of concentration as well as ideal for filling in the details of any long-range planning. Albert Einstein, a Pisces Sun, had this same aspect in his natal chart, but in pioneering Aries. In fact, it was the closest aspect, in his chart, with the conjunction occurring only one degree apart, suggesting that this planetary pairing would have a defining impact upon his thinking and general behavior. Mercury-Saturn is also thought to correlate with more of an aptitude for science, math, research, and critical thinking in general.

Because cautious, serious Saturn symbolically represents the principle of contraction, sometimes with this Mercury-Saturn energy we also tend to “trim the fat from our words” choosing to be as precise or succinct as possible in our speech or writing. Of course, with this conjunction occurring in “voluminous” Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius now, we may not be as parsimonious with our words as might be expected! At the very least, however, this may be a very good time to scale deeper with our thinking, to become keener observers of the world around us, or to hone or develop our listening skills.

Because Saturn also symbolizes our fears, worries, or concerns, Mercury-Saturn can also find us pondering “worst case scenarios.” Benjamin Disraeli once mused about this type of thinking this way: “I am prepared for the worst (Saturn), but hope for the best (Jupiter).” Additionally, on the shadow side, Mercury-Saturn can trigger more judgmental behavior, as well as an intolerance for views that are different from our own.

Enterprising Mars in “balancing” Libra is also sextiling Saturn today, an aspect that is linked with sustained effort, industriousness, and planning for tomorrow, sort of akin to a farmer diligently sowing seeds for future crops. Too, with Mars in “collaborative” Libra, it can indicate a positive period for formulating or arranging diplomatic or cooperative strategies.

The Moon in “stabilizing” Taurus also potentially supplies us with extra reserves of patience and perseverance today. French playwright Moliere noted that the trees that are slow to grow “bear the best fruit.”

Questions for Today: What topics are more difficult for you to talk about, and why? Where in your life do you maybe need to let go of judgments? What might you need to say “no” to now as a way of loving self-care?

“If your mind carries a heavy burden of the past, you will experience more of the same. The past perpetuates itself through lack of presence. The quality of your consciousness at this moment is what shapes the future.” Eckhart Tolle

COSMIC WATCH:

Old Trees In Autumnal Forest

With “mental” Mercury conjunct “cautious” Saturn, today, there can be a tendency to dwell on “what’s not working” – or what could go wrong – instead of focusing on what’s going smoothly, or on the mend. Albert Einstein once said, “Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them.” Meaning that if we’re going to fix or resolve things, we must first find a way to expand our consciousness.

Interestingly, Einstein, a Pisces Sun with a Sagittarian Moon, was born with his natal Mercury in a tight conjunction with Saturn in “pioneering” Aries. Mercury-Saturn aspects, on the plus side, can often confer great powers of concentration, or allow us to think very deeply about things, as it is the nature of Saturn to narrow or refine our focus.

Additionally, Mercury-Saturn can also make us more aware of our distinctness, or separateness, from others; Saturn energy is naturally associated with a desire to set boundaries around ourselves. Also, on the shadow side, we’re potentially more sensitive, now, to perceived hurts or slights from others. Choosing our words more carefully, today, so as not to unduly offend others, might be a very good idea. Also, if we can put in an encouraging word, if we’re around someone who’s down, that may also go a long way in helping to turn their day around. While Mercury-Saturn can often incline some of us to want to be alone, now, with our own thoughts, for others it can be a time when serious discussions are broached.

Mercury conjunct Saturn is an excellent period to work on projects that require attention to detail, or research. This influence can also be favorable for studying history, with Saturn ruling the past.

Question for Today: What problem in your life, now, may actually be a “gift in disguise?”

“There’s no value in digging shallow wells in a hundred places. Decide on one place and dig deep. Even if you encounter a rock, use dynamite and keep going down. If you leave that to dig another well, all the first effort is wasted and there is no proof you won’t hit rock again. “ Swami Satchidananda

Intellectual Mercury conjuncts serious Saturn. Both Mercury and Saturn shift into probing Scorpio. We’re presented with rich opportunities to go deeper with our thinking. We eagerly voyage to remote regions. Also, with Mercury trining fantasy Neptune, we are able to give a voice (Mercury) to our dreams (Neptune).

COSMIC WEATHER:

The Sentimental Moon leaves Idealistic Libra for Intense Scorpio (3:52 pm EDT) turning up the volume on our emotions.

Communicator Mercury conjuncts Serious Saturn in Relationship Libra (7:36 am EDT) inclining us to seek out substance over frills in our interactions.  With Mercury-Saturn, we want our words to carry maximum weight and impact.

Saturn, by itself, characteristically endows us with a strong sense of duty and responsibility. Saturn represents the work ethic and achievement. Mercury-Saturn, on the shadow side, can also trigger our fears and awareness of our personal limitations. With Saturn, we tend to be more acutely aware of our boundaries, our sense of separateness.

Venus, ruling money, art, beauty, music, romance, relationships, all the things that we love, also turns retrograde in Probing Scorpio today (3:05 am EDT), the sign of life, death, and rebirth. With Venus retrograde here, we are seeking “deeper” connections.  Deeper ties to both our past and present, and also, correspondingly, a more palpable sense of our own continuity and purpose. (Venus will be retrograde until November 18th.)

Symbolically, our lives are like great “Venusian works of art” in progress. Venus retrograde prods us to revisit and remotely observe some of what we have already painted or sculpted. We listen, once again, to the old songs that our hearts composed earlier. We  maybe recollect past relationships, retrace some of the kisses and hugs, recall some of the sorrows, awkward moments, the warm laughter that we shared together. The “retro viewpoint” can help us to garner new wisdom, insight, and inspiration about what we are currently facing and creating in the present moment with our lives. The past is essentially the yardstick we leverage to define ourselves and calculate our evolution.

Sometimes, too, Venus retrograde brings old lovers, old relationships, back into our lives.

On another level, with Venus retro in Scorpio, we are also more symbolically and theoretically linked with “great artists who have transitioned” beyond the Earth plane (Venus rules artists and performers). Scorpio energy connects us with”transitioning experiences.”

Just yesterday, for example, I got a telephone message from a friend telling me she had just lost her pet bird after 16 years. In my horoscope, Mars, the Great Activator or Trigger of events, was exactly conjunct my 8th house cusp in Scorpio, when I heard the news. This house  is associated with “endings” and death. My friend, who lost her bird, also has Pluto (Scorpio’s co-ruler) now exactly conjunct her 8th house cusp at 2 Capricorn.

Interestingly, Mental Mercury is now conjunct Karma Lord Saturn, in John Lennon’s old sign of Libra, making this perhaps a more fitting  time for us to mentally revisit and ponder the huge legacy that John, in particular, bequeathed to us. (It is John’s birthday, October 9th, and many events have been planned around the world to mark the event.)

Mercury-Saturn often denotes a mental focus on the past, on our roots or foundation. Sometimes this energy is also layered in with a touch of melancholy and sadness, due to Saturn’s heavier vibration and natural focus on loss and limitation. John would have been 70 years old tomorrow. John’s widow, Yoko Ono, will light the Imagine Peace Tower in Reykjavik, Iceland in his memory. Below is a link to the “Imagine Peace Tower Documentary.”
