It’s always nice to begin our Monday with a little bit of extra zing, going for us – and that appears to be the situation today!
The Waning Moon (governing our emotions) first shifts into “start me up” Aries, this morning (6:02 am), the sign of new beginnings, and then, later tonight, the Sun (ego, purpose, and will) follows suit with a shift into “self-expressive” Leo the Lion (10:50 pm), where it will hang out for the next 30 days, giving us ample time to “strut our stuff” as well as display/employ/develop our creative abilities and leadership skills. When the Sun is in proud, self-confident Leo, we naturally like to be in charge. We also crave the limelight. The Sun will be joining assertive Mars, already in Leo, and, later this week, lovable Venus will also be entering this kingly-queenly sign.
Another cool thing about today is that, numerologically, it’s the 22nd day of the month. The number 22 is considered to be a “master number” and is linked with the “master builder” vibration, potentially allowing us to manifest our dreams with greater ease.
Also, the simple fact that it’s a Monday, the beginning of the workweek, can inspire or re-motivate us to, once again, get going with our lofty, very laudable agendas. (In Daniel H. Pink’s latest book “When”, he mentions “Mondays” as one of the “temporal landmarks” associated with fresh starts.)
Too, since the Moon is in its waning phase and decision-maker Mercury is retrograde until July 31st, it may be best to focus on putting the finishing touches on our magnifico creations now instead of rolling out anything new.
“Starting is not most people’s problem, staying, continuing and finishing is.” Darren Hardy

On This Day in History: On July 22, 1959, Ed Wood’s cult classic “Plan 9 From Outer Space” (an independently produced science fiction-horror film) called one of the worst films ever, premieres.
Astrologically, that day, presenter Mercury was stationing retrograde in “Hollywood director” Leo conjunct eccentric, quirky Uranus (the planet which also governs science fiction). Enterprising Mars was also newly-installed in detail-minded Virgo conjunct “shock-jock” Pluto. Mars and Pluto were also trine to “Father Time” Saturn in “professionally-minded” Capricorn which is maybe why the movie is still being talked about today. Trines to Saturn are associated with longevity (or staying power).

COSMIC WATCH:
Revelations are possible, now, with a Full Moon in “grounded” Taurus occurring, today (5:23 pm EST), at 14 degrees, 26 minutes of the sign. Full Moons, literally and symbolically, shed more light on our path and also signify matters coming to a head or culmination. The peak awareness that is culled from a Full Moon is also thought to set into motion a “period of release,” similar to when the autumn leaves reach their peak color and then, shortly thereafter, drop from the trees. We also want to let go of, now, and for the next two weeks, those elements which are no longer serving us or that have outlived their usefulness to us.
Taurus, a fixed earth sign, is all about the world of form or substance. It is in Taurus, where we learn to fully appreciate the charms and allure of the physical body and also where we delight in experiencing the richness of the five senses. A Full Moon in Taurus can, ideally, spawn greater awareness of what we may need to add, or what we may need to subtract from our lives, now, in order to make them more joyful and pleasurable. Jane Austen once wrote, “Every moment has its pleasures and its hope.” All we have to do is find a way to ferret out this potential in our daily lives. Too, it has been shown that having warm feelings can also alter our body chemistry, in a positive way, by helping to release oxytocin, a hormone that can reduce blood pressure and cortisol associated with stress.
With this Full Moon, we may also glean fresh insights into how to best stabilize or anchor our world, keeping in mind that, the symbol for Taurus is the Bull, an animal that always has its feet planted firmly on the ground. Experiencing ownership of resources is also vital to the Taurus psyche, as is the preservation of whatever is accumulated. Too, what we end up “attracting to us” is largely rooted in our values, which Taurus also represents. This Full Moon is an excellent time to get clearer about what it is that we value, or want more of in our life. When we also learn to align our actions around our values, life can become a whole lot easier, as well as much more fulfilling. With the Sun in opposing Scorpio, the sign of shared resources, we may also have more of a need, now, to figure out a way to balance or mesh our values with the values of others.
This Full Moon finds “sweet” Venus, the lunation’s ruler, still in a conjunction with the purposeful Sun. Overall, this is more of a softening influence that can make us more willing to be cooperative with others. Of course, with this conjunction taking place in “intense” Scorpio, it can also help connect us with our passions, or deepest cravings. “Assertive” Mars and “penetrating” Pluto are also trining the Full Moon from “ambitious” Capricorn, with Mars moving into an exact conjunction with Pluto, in just a few days. Mars-Pluto suggests that we we’re not going to budge much, from whatever it is that we’re pursuing, now, with Pluto, optimally, giving us more of a “laser-beam” focus on our goals. Let us not be content to wait and see what will happen, but give us the determination to make the right things happen.” Horace Mann.
Some things that we may want to release during this Full Moon: self-limiting beliefs about money and earning capacity; fears about not having enough; thoughts that we are what we have – that the key to our happiness lies outside of us; fear of change; feeling guilty about experiencing pleasure; feeling ashamed about our bodies.
Question for Today: What revelation would be a breakthrough for you?

COSMIC WATCH:
“Assertive” Mars is conjunct “transforming” Pluto today (3:17 pm EST). This is potentially a very powerful and renewing combination of energy that can significantly strengthen our focus and determination. It can also increase our insight and general awareness into ourselves, including perhaps helping us to understand some of the deeper reasons or hidden motivations behind our behavior. Metaphorically, this aspect can make us feel a little like our (psychological) shackles are finally being removed. Too, this is an ideal period for purge projects. Or, makeovers.
This is also an influence that can serve to connect us with what is seemingly our special destiny or purpose in life. We may feel more of a sense what it is that we came here to do now, along with an urgency to act on that mission.
On the shadow side, our egos may not take too kindly to any sort of perceived restraint or interference from others now. Unfortunately, Mars-Pluto is all too often associated with setting up a more combustible atmosphere in which power struggles tend to ensue. Of course, when we deliberately choose to seek out the common ground between us, we can usually find a way to work together. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”Helen Keller

“A mind once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimension.” Oliver Wendell Holmes
Lordy, lordy! Look up in the sky! What is that coppery red, circular blob up there glowing in the heavens? Is it some kind of mysterious drunken bird with bloodshot eyes? Is it a space station from the planet Mars? Or did maybe Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer suffer some sort of painful nose detachment in a test run for the big event this weekend?
It could be that all of these lunatic interpretations are wrong, and what we are really looking at is the “Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse” on December 21, 2010 (3:14 am EST) at 29 degrees of motor mouth Gemini, which is also occurring on the same day as the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Something that hasn’t happened together for 456 years, according to NASA.
The winter solstice is symbolically viewed as a transforming rebirth of the life-giving Sun, going from dark to light (shorter to longer days). While the full moon brings things to “full illumination and fruition,” with eclipses tending to magnify the impact of the typical full moon energy.
The coupling of these two, awe-inspiring, celestial events could be spiritually transforming for us, too, if we choose this rare time for prayer and meditation, and for going within. We are symbolically moving from an “unenlightened state” to a “state of enlightenment.” The lights of our consciousness are being “turned back on,” we are becoming more empowered, and can theoretically now “more clearly see our path.” A powerful time to set our intentions for the new year.
On another, more mundane level, however, this big, regenerating sky event, will also likely ratchet up all of our light bills significantly at the end of the month, causing many of us to flip our switches! We know how nothing is free anymore. Too, look for the stars to twinkle less in the coming year, as control freak Pluto in tightwad Capricorn imposes strict new energy efficiency standards on their output. 🙂
There is even a possibility that we may have to launch Saint Julian Assange and all of his holy WikiLeaks crew into outer space to investigate further, this matter of the dimming celestial lights. Early rumor has it that Michael Moore is also willing to foot the bill for the trip, if he can later make a twilight zone documentary of the whole thing starring Hillary Clinton.
It could be, too, that this Lunar Eclipse is really a hoax that the White House is clandestinely staging to divert our attention. We live in such a wicked world nowadays, we can never take anything at face value anymore. Until recently, there was virtually zero transparency. That is, until WikiLeaks gallantly came along. But then again, we may also want to question the motivation behind that glittery empire. Things are not always as they appear. So much is a sham. A masquerade. Would not be surprised if Assange is really an alien creature from another galaxy, checking the temperature and pulse of things on earth before spearheading a complete takeover of the planet in 2012 by hackers with no teeth.
Even the face of the Moon, seems to be sporting an escalating, and very suspicious looking case of acne now, with this Lunar Eclipse. Just look at those red pock marks on her. They’re everywhere! Probably due, in large part, to a female hormonal imbalance, spawned by menopause. The curse of the female DNA!
But, then again, it could just be that the marks are fake, and actually an orchestrated disguise. A stealthily paid for advertisement to get us thinking about pimple cream and our complexions. What ever happened to the good ole’ days and simply making love by the silvery Moon in our ’57 Chevy? No pressure of multi-tasking. No subversive messages about zits impinging upon our tender brains. We only had a few knobs to reach for, a few buttons to push. Lassie the collie dog roamed, but always came home at night with angelic Timmy. June Lockhart was there to make dinner and read us a bedtime story, and to tuck us in.
In all due seriousness (but can we even be serious with a devilishly lighthearted Gemini Moon?), this rare lunar event may be when we want to take full ownership, a full accounting, of our myriad thoughts and ideas, which are symbolically ruled by dictionary-minded Gemini, the designator of our humble conscious awareness and the sign of communication and speech. Attempt to gain a “full moon awareness and illumination” of all of the stuff and information that we endlessly pile away in our plush little heads, while going about the course of our soulful daily lives. Especially since the Eclipse is taking place at 29 degrees of Gemini, the very last degree of the sign, when we could all very well be “at the end of our ropes,” with respect to suffering all the stressful symptoms from an “over-crammed head,” which can often make it much more difficult to swallow, or to even blink our eyes. We know we will be completely finished off when we can no longer move our lips – instant death for a chatty Gemini Moon! Perish the thought.
Some suggested things to ask ourselves now: Why do we choose to feed our heads the way that we do? Is the mental diet that we are adhering to, meeting our daily intellectual needs as set up by the government? Are we happy with the general landscape of our mind? Or do we live in fear and trepidation at the prospect of getting lost in our thoughts because they are plum too bewildering and creepy? Especially the one about Sarah Palin becoming President, with Bristol Palin as Vice-President.
Another immediate case in point: Reading this blog right now. It may very well be that we need to be more discriminating about what we give our attention to in the future. Do we we even know why we are choosing to read about astrology? What need are we trying to fill? Are we just needing to believe in fairy-tales? Or, are we on to something much bigger, that many still don’t know about?
Too, why am I spending my present time writing about the faraway Moon when I may be better off vacuuming? Or combing my hair. Or learning how to play the piano like Elton John. Why do we choose to talk or write about the things that we do? Are we even aware, most of the time, of what we are emitting through our speech and communication? Including awareness of the impact of the specific words we choose to use? Would we maybe be better off communicating with fewer words, or using different words? Too, maybe we should all start whispering, especially those of us with high-pitched, shrill voices. Could be, too, that we should choose total silence, as our preferred state of being, instead of being incessantly steeped in chatter. Spend more time meditating and listening to the supposed wisdom of that still small voice within ourselves. How good a listener are we, anyway? Another weighty thing to ponder about now with the lunar eclipse here in the sign of communication: Our listening skills.
What is especially notable about this powerful eclipse today is that it is square to the Jupiter and Uranus conjunction in imaginative Pisces. Jupiter-Uranus can denote flashes of genius and extraordinary insight. It can also make us think way outside of the box. This is because rebel Uranus is an innovator, and often acts as a potent catalyst for change, particularly sudden changes that dramatically alter the playing field. Expander Jupiter generously helps to fuel the Uranian mission. Of course, Uranus also excels in spreading revolution, and or general mayhem.
Interestingly here, too, at the moment that I am writing this blog (Sat. Dec 18), with the politically-minded Sagittarius Sun exactly square to Uranus, as well as to the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction, the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” bill has just cleared its last procedural hurdle in the Senate, and is now reportedly slated to be voted on the floor of the full Senate on Monday, the eve of this Total Lunar Eclipse. Uranus is associated with equality, and normally figures prominently into gay rights issues. It could be that the “changing our ideas” Gemini Eclipse Moon (or at least recalibrating our thinking) finally triggers the repeal of DADT. It certainly appears to be looking that way now.
Senator Joe Lieberman, the lead sponsor of the DADT repeal bill, originally presented the bill when Uranus was prominent in the sky. I earlier wrote a blog on this subject. Pisces, too, is the sign that is associated with the downtrodden, the disenfranchised, and minority groups.
Additionally Mental Mercury (ruler of Gemini) is retrograding back into conviction-minded Sagittarius and is again forming a square to Jupiter-Uranus. Extra progressive icing on the holiday Senatorial cake. Of course, not everyone is in agreement about repealing DADT. And, Uranus is also probably reveling in the cacophony of opinion and the clash of philosophical differences. In the end, though, Uranus, the liberator that he is, will probably rest on the side of civil rights.
Historically, this Jupiter-Uranus conjunction has correlated with rapid breakthroughs in science and technology as well (Uranus rules these two areas). Neil Armstrong and “Buzz Aldrin” even landed in the Sea of Tranquility and became the first humans to walk the Moon with this aspect. So, there is really no telling where we can rocket to now in our minds, if we choose to, with this spectacular convergence of celestial energies. In the end, it’s all a matter of how we fuel our thoughts. Do we sufficiently fill their tanks? Or do we neglect them, and let them run on empty? Also, we may need to consciously empty our minds now of thoughts and beliefs that we have outgrown, that are only serving to keep a stranglehold on our further understanding and awareness, and keeping us from spectacularly landing and walking on our own personal Moons.
“I want to know God’s thoughts; the rest are details.” Albert Einstein
News Update 12/18: With the Sun in zealous Sagittarius exactly square equality-ruling Uranus (and square expansive Jupiter), and sextile “let’s all peacefully co-exist” Neptune, in humanitarian Aquarius, the U.S. Senate has historically gone ahead and voted today to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” by a vote of 65 to 31.
It appears that the square to sudden-acting, unpredictable Uranus really forced this issue today, something Uranus characteristically does. It forces changes, perhaps even more so now since it is aligned with the over-expander Jupiter, forcing the Senate to take “a giant leap” for the collective.
Too, we still have warrior Mars, ruling the military, in a separating conjunction with the Godfather of Transformation, Pluto, in governmental Capricorn. Mars and Pluto also rule sex, and issues of sexuality.
Also with Mars-Pluto, a new, powerful tax bill was successfully passed this past week, with Pluto additionally ruling taxes. With Pluto, we tend to pare down, and now it looks like with this new tax bill, there will be a big paring down of services that the U.S. government will be offering its citizenry. On the other hand, perhaps the reduction in taxes, will spur economic growth. That is apparently the hope.
The Senate meanwhile, has now sent the DADT repeal bill to President Obama to sign. Obama had campaigned on ending the DADT policy, which banned gays and lesbians from openly serving in the military. So we had a very historic day today, especially fascinating, too, from an astrological perspective. Could be that this Total Lunar Eclipse and Winter Solstice also bring about more big Uranian changes for the collective, the energies of these two events already starting to crescendo. The Senate is also suppose to continue with a discussion of START on Monday, another heavyweight issue that could impact the whole planet.

Cosmic Word Of The Day: Gripping
(Mercury, Mars, Pluto, North Node conjoined in Capricorn. Venus sextile Pluto.)
Gripping: 1) the act of grasping; a seizing and holding fast 2) a grasp, hold, or control 3) mental or intellectual hold
“A convergence of ‘gripping energy’ continues to unfold around us. We’re all sort of like sitting ducks for the next few days, held hostage to it. 🙂
One bright spot: There’s no need to spend any money on movie tickets to watch high action-packed dramas, when we have so much suspenseful adventure occurring around us now, on a daily basis, free of charge.
Fortunately, thanks to our knowledge of astrology, we can at least take some refuge in blaming most of the seemingly implosive events and turmoil that we are hearing about so much in the news now, on that dark little guy P-L-U-T-O, who is sitting cozily on his dethroned throne, with rare, warm assist from clever Mercury, warrior Mars, and the “let me point you in the direction of your karma, kiddies” North Node. All these players are singularly holed up in the sign of governmental, big business Capricorn.
Pluto’s, no doubt, been waiting for this captivating, ‘dream team’ Capricorn line-up, for quite a while, considering he’s such a power-monger and control freak. He’s no doubt loving the so-called ‘David and Goliath showdown’ playing out in the collective between WikiLeaks and governmental bodies, and now also big business (MasterCard, Visa, Paypal, Amazon, etc) is becoming roped into this scenario, with the arrival of gung-ho, soldier boy Mars into Capricorn. Capricorn really denotes authority figures and other high-profile types, in general. Basically, anyone who wields power over others, or at least, dreams of doing so. Too, with Capricorn, we’re thinking about our legacy, and the length of our obituary.
Then we also have, of course, prominently figuring into the equation here, the matter of Santa Claus Jupiter conjunct ‘hi-tech’ Uranus, in behind the scenes, ‘you’ll never be able to catch me’ Pisces, getting its seeming ‘encrypted code’ jollies. Generous Jupiter’s apparently putting rebel Uranian hackers under all of our holiday trees this season, thanks to dictatorial directives from Pluto and the rest of the gestapo gang in Capricorn. Maybe it’s because we’ve been too naughty this year? I just want to know one thing: Whatever happened to plain old Barbie and Ken dolls, and electric trains, as gifts?
Jupiter conjunct Uranus is associated with genius. The U.S. put a man on the Moon with this same exciting influence. But, now it also has the zealous hacker connotation to it, and the “freedom of speech at all costs” battle cry. Or, in other words, I’ll bust your cookie jar and steal all your cookies, and leave you only a few crumbs, if you don’t let me air your dirty laundry in public. Cranky Uranus has to have its freedom, loves being a law unto itself. No matter that there are billions of us here on planet Earth, and we all need to somehow figure out how to peacefully co-exist. Why can’t we make love, instead of waging computer war games?
The last couple days have also been emotionally very gripping with the death of beloved Cancerian, Elizabeth Edwards, and now also word that Aretha Franklin is suffering from pancreatic cancer. (Get well, Aretha.) We also had the very sad memorial for John Lennon yesterday, marking the 30th anniversary of his senseless death.
Too, even Oprah Winfrey was poignantly captured on tape yesterday, shedding some tears, during a Barbara Walters interview discussing her deep friendship with her best friend, Gayle King.
Simultaneous to these latter, personally gripping events, we have had relationship Venus in Scorpio (sign of death, rebirth, and crisis) sextile Pluto (Scorpio’s ruler), an aspect that often pulls at our heartstrings and tears at our emotions in unprecedented ways. With Venus-Pluto, we become deeply aware (Pluto) of the potentially awesome power of love (Venus), and its life-altering impact on our emotions. This Venus-Pluto influence will still be around for a few more days. We better continue to keep some Kleenex close by.
Still also not a peep out of George Clooney, either! We were hoping that he might come around with the magical Venus-Pluto. Yes, George is also worth at least two or three Kleenex. Looks like another bleak Saturday night’s on tap for us. Do you think that it could be that George is just shy, and that’s why he doesn’t connect with us? He does have his distant Capricorn Moon conjunct serious Saturn. Saturn maybe subdues him emotionally, and maybe does make him a little bit shy. ‘George, no need to worry. We’ll be gentle with you.’
Also today: The Moon enters emotionally detached, cerebrally-minded Aquarius (2:32 am EST), perhaps providing us with a better chance to momentarily glean rational, cooler perspective on everything that’s going on, and try to make sense of some of the mad theater playing out on the world stage, before Mercury does its thing and goes ‘rogue retrograde’ tomorrow until December 30th.”
“Being a singer is a natural gift. It means I’m using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use. I’m happy with that.” Aretha Franklin.

“The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.” H. L. Mencken
Whether that sentiment is true or not we are seeking a good measure of safety and security today with the New Moon in money-conscious and stabilizing Taurus. New moons mark new beginnings.
This new chapter today speaks to us of setting our intentions for practical strategies that fortify our security. For instance, now would be a great time to come up with a money-saving plan for the future. Or perhaps think of a way that we can somehow attract to us more of the things that we want in our lives.
The New Moon’s sextile to abundant Jupiter is waiting to reward us here. We only have to be willing and able to put forth some degree of effort and initiative (trine to Saturn in Virgo) in the matter.
The New Moon also makes a restless square to assertive Mars in Leo. There is some tension here that needs to be resolved between seeking security and freedom of self-expression. Most of the time with Mars squares we feel the need to take some kind of swift action. Leo the Lion, too, is king of the jungle, so some of this action may involve temporarily seizing the spotlight as a show of power and dominance.
Events in history on this date:
Speakingof power and dominance, how about Leo Mick Jagger and Sagittarian Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones? Those two iconic figures certainly epitomize both of those things in contemporary culture and popular music.
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” perhaps the biggest song in rock n’ roll history and Stones’ signature work, was reportedly written in May of 1965 and recorded on this date, May 13 (or right around, some confusion here). Keith Richards is said to have composed the song in his sleep and Mick penned the lyrics. The song speaks to the crass commercialization of society.
The cosmic energy at the time was so fitting for a song like Satisfaction to materialize. Pioneering Mars was conjoined rebel Uranus and transforming Pluto in the critical sign of Virgo (Virgo deals with the digesting of experience). Many of us suddenly started to realize that we were not really happy with all the types of homogenized garbage that we had been fed on how we should live and what kinds of values we should espouse.
With Mars and Uranus aligned, we’re ready for revolt (Mars rules war). Uranus clamors to us to rise up against anything that traps us or keeps individuality submerged. We insist on personal freedom at all costs and we don’t want anyone dictating to us how we must feel or live (the lyrics of Satisfaction).
Interestingly, Keith Richards also has both Mars and Uranus configured together in his birth chart. He vibrates to this kind of individualistic mindset daily in his own life. The expansive transiting Jupiter in communication Gemini was also exactly conjuncting Richards’ Mars-Uranus conjunction, accentuating the influence, when he wrote Satisfaction. Uranus also rules genius and invention and, in music, highly original compositions.
That Mars-Uranus conjunction in his chart is also trine to his natal Neptune. Neptune governs imagination and music. It also rules sleep and dreams. Imagine being able to go to bed and wake up with a song in your head that is going to eventually make you zillions of dollars. Not a bad life or karma! That is how Neptune usually works for us, too. We get inspiration from it a lot of times in our dreams when we are more attuned to our subconscious and otherworldly dimensions.
Mick Jagger also had several favorable Jupiter aspects like Keith had when he wrote the Satisfaction lyrics, including Jupiter sextile both his natal Jupiter and Pluto in Leo conjunction. Traditionally that is a “luckier” time when new doors suddenly open up for us (and Leo again rules the entertainment realm).
Mick also had transiting Pluto (a powerful life-changer) exactly conjunct his natal Venus in Virgo. Venus rules artistic expression and aligned with Pluto it can denote giving creative birth to something so big (Pluto rules the masses), a masterpiece, that one’s life is literally changed forever as a result. Pluto-Venus can also be a period in which you can make a mega amount of money, as Pluto is associated with great wealth and Venus, as ruler of Taurus, governs money.
