“Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?” – Ernest Gaines.

We have the Sun today at the tale end of pragmatic Taurus harmoniously linking up (sextile) to innovator Uranus in Pisces. There is fresh opportunity here to improve our lives in a practical way (Taurus) with the inclusion of some new methods and ideas (Uranus).

With Sun-Uranus, we may suddenly have some “aha moments” in which we are able to figure some things out that may have previously stumped us.  Uranus rules genius and invention. This is a very cool influence.  It also speaks voluminously to us about liberation (Uranus) and personal freedom and wanting to include more freedom into our lives.

Relationship Venus is also now in nurturing Cancer, the sign of home and family. We start focusing more on nesting matters with Venus here although today, with the restless, exploratory Sun-Uranus ray in operation, we may not be ready just yet to find a good measure of our fulfillment sticking close to the home front.

The Moon leaves entertaining, self-expressive Leo and heads into neat-freak Virgo at 7:59 pm EDT at which time we may decide that, yes, perhaps our true purpose and calling in this lifetime may in fact be to stand behind a vacuum tidying up our little (Cancer) nests.

Astrology in real life:

Did you see Oprah yesterday? The program was kind of a poster child for what we had playing out in the heavens on Wednesday.

Oprah started the show talking to Bret Michaels, his first TV interview since his brain hemorrhage last month. Bret spoke about his new lease on life after his near-death experience.

Then she interviewed country star Chely Wright.  Chely talked about how her coming out as a lesbian has helped her to finally live her truth.

Yesterday, if you recall, we had Venus exactly square Uranus. Venus rules romance and relationships.  When it is paired with rebel Uranus in our own personal horoscopes, we have a tendency to form unconventional or non-traditional alliances.

Venus-Uranus correspondingly denotes gay and lesbian unions, a topic in which I have written about a few times before here at this blog. Also, on days when we have Venus-Uranus aspects, gay and lesbian issues often move to the forefront with respect to the collective.   Oprah’s TV Show, of course, reaches millions of viewers and has a role in shaping mass consciousness.

We also had Mercury, which rules communication and interviews, exactly trine Pluto on Wednesday.  As I noted here yesterday, often with Mercury-Pluto we hear about big secrets, as Pluto epitomizes things that are hidden.

As ruler of Scorpio, Pluto also specifically governs hidden sexual issues, as well as matters of death and rebirth.  Pluto also rules the masses.

Chely poignantly revealed to us on Oprah how she had lived a total lie all her life by not coming forward with her true sexuality (Pluto).  She also shared that she had almost committed suicide (Pluto) by putting a gun in her mouth.

Bret Michaels also talked about how fortunate he was that he did not die (Pluto) and how he felt reborn now (Pluto) in wake of the experience.  Both interviews were heavily laden with the Pluto death and rebirth themes.

There were also strong undercurrents of yesterday’s nebulous Sun square Neptune influence on the program, especially Chely’s disclosure that she had been living a lie (Neptune rules deception). Neptune also depicts the more fragile or tenuous nature of the physical life form and often demonstrates to us, through its activation in our lives, how sometimes our ability to hold onto the physical body is as precarious as holding onto a single thread.

Neptune, known as the Great Dissolver, symbolizes the dissolving of physical boundaries in its quest to transition us into the spirit world.  Neptune denotes our spiritual component or link to the Divine. Both Chely Wright and Bret Michaels spoke to Oprah about praying to God (Neptune) to save them in their moments of despair.

We also saw another variation of the Sun-Neptune energy playing out before the collective yesterday. A U.S. jury decided that drug-maker Novartis must pay $250 million in damages to more than 5,000 current and former employees.  The jury award came two days after the finding that the U.S. division of the company discriminated against women over pay, promotion and pregnancy.

Neptune rules drugs and pharmaceutical companies.  Aquarius, the sign Neptune is currently in, also rules equality issues and epitomizes the needs and rights of the individual within the collective. Often when Aquarius is emphasized there is progress regarding individual rights. The Sun in the money-sign of Taurus also spelled bad news for the drug-maker, in terms of its’ financial liability.

Yesterday’s Venus square Uranus influence also entered into the equation here since we were dealing with a gender bias issue. Venus also denotes females and Uranus, as ruler of Aquarius, is now in the sign of  Neptune-ruled Pisces (drugs).

Too, the discrimination ruling against the company two days ago came with the mutable T-Square in full force involving Saturn, Venus, Uranus and Jupiter. Saturn is in Virgo, ruling employment matters. Jupiter and Uranus are in Pisces, the Neptune ruled sign associated with drugs.  Venus (females) was squaring off against the Virgo and Pisces energies, forcing this gender-related issue.

I thought it was very symbolic, too, to have Uranus, the liberator, at the very end of Pisces, representing the full fruition of all the sign stands for.  Pisces not only rules drugs, it also depicts segments of society that are downtrodden and discriminated against.

Enjoy your Thursday!  Expect some “aha moments.”

Astrology Horoscope May 19, 2010: Erratic Emotions

“We humans are full of unpredictable emotions that logic alone cannot solve.” James T. Kirk

Some major planetary energies are aligned above us today.

Romantic Venus, at the tale end of Gemini, forms a square to rebel Uranus in Pisces. We need to be more mindful of how we handle our relationships, as unstable and impulsive emotional elements are more at play here. Intimacy may seem less important to us than pursuing our personal freedom. Unconventional relationships also hold more appeal for us now.

The illuminating Sun in Taurus squares foggy Neptune in Aquarius.  Always with Neptune, it is harder for us to see clearly regarding the true nature of things. Everything seems to be wrapped in a veil of illusion. We are also more vulnerable to trickery and someone pulling the wool over our eyes. With this configuration involving the money and possession sign of Taurus, we need to be more careful with our resources today and steer clear away from any “get rich quick schemes.”

Additionally, with Sun-Neptune energy, there is often some measure of  “ego-denying experiences” that we must learn to deal with and confront. Also, some “dissolving” or “passing away” of certain elements of our reality may be taking place now.

To make the day even more intriguing, we have Winged Messenger Mercury in Taurus exactly trine to probing Pluto in Capricorn. Normally with Mercury-Pluto we are privy to finding out some BIG SECRETS, solving colossal riddles, and ferreting out troublemakers from their hiding places. The weird thing is, we also have the murky Sun-Neptune lurking around, so our dilemma is, how do we know whether what we are hearing today is really the truth, and nothing but the whole truth, so help me God? I’m not sure that we do have total clarity here.  Probably what we need to do is just wade along on a case by case basis and see what applies for specific situations.

On top of all of this planetary overload, we also have the Moon in theatrical Leo to deal with.  Of course, she is reacting strongly and dramatically to everything that is going on around her particularly any affronts to her personal power. So today, ought to be somewhat of a doozy. Be prepared to thrust into warp speed at any moment.

What I am really liking about the energy of today is that it is DIFFERENT. Even though though there is some measure of weirdness going on around us now with Neptune, we are also more mentally probing with Mercury Pluto.  Neptune can also make us very imaginative, so this influence is powerful for any work projects in the creative arts area.  Neptune specifically rules dance, photography, film-making, music, poetry, and painting. Venus Uranus also helps us to see our connections to others, as well as our relationship needs, in a new light, and I think that is also a bit of fresh air here.

On a final note, with the continuing drama unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico, I am wondering if the Sun-Neptune energy today may bring new developments on that front, as Neptune rules both the sea and oil. The concern now is that the oil may soon be moving from wind currents to the Keys and up the East Coast to the Carolinas and Virginia.  Let’s pray that will not be the case.

Enjoy your Wednesday.  Let me know if it ends up being one for the record books!

Patricia Thompson’s Astrology May 18, 2010: Magical Love

“I love to be alone.  I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.” Henry David Thoreau

Relationship Venus squares distant Saturn. More of a challenging, boxed up type of energy that tends to make us feel a little squarish. It seems harder for us to do the Venus connecting thing.  We sense or feel that we are unloved or unappreciated. The Moon’s placement in sensitive Cancer only serves to make us more aware of our real or imagined wounds.

Fortunately this blocked Venus-Saturn energy is somewhat dissipated with a harmonious trine to spiritual Neptune which does much to elevate our mood and longing. Neptune makes us want to connect again with others but in a more mystical and idealistic way. With Venus-Neptune, we’re looking for someone to put on a pedestal, a magical deity we can worship. We don’t want anyone in our orbit who is going to serve to remind us of our limitations or who belittles our heart’s desires.

“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” John Lennon

The Moon’s entrance into theatrical Leo (at 5:06 pm EDT) relaxes us and make us feel more self-confident, outgoing.  It also helps to wondrously stoke our creative juices, along with the Venus-Neptune which is very imaginative and inspiring.

The evening hours are excellent for outlets such as photography, film-making, painting, poetry, dance, writing or simply listening to Neptunian music. The Sun’s positive trine to Saturn here also helps to steady our focus and concentration.

Mars in Leo is also now officially out of its “shadow retrograde period,” as of today.  Theoretically, it should be easier for us to move forward with our ambitions.

In the News:

The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday, in a 7-2 vote, ruled that sex offenders can be imprisoned after their sentences expire.

Pisces is the sign of the zodiac that rules criminals and prisoners.

On Monday, we had the transiting Venus in Gemini in a challenging square to Jupiter in Pisces. When we have Venus-Jupiter in a stressful relationship with each other, it is often harder for us to “temper our pleasure-seeking impulses”  which are denoted by Venus. (Venus also specifically governs our affections and romantic feelings.)

Jupiter always thinks bigger is better and more of everything is king. Jupiter tends to throw off or distort the balance of nature in a “larger than life” way, when he is allowed to run rampant.

As I mentioned in my horoscope yesterday, with Venus square Jupiter, the universe was likely going to be teaching us a thing or two about the importance of moderating our impulses.  The Supreme Court decision, coming as it did in the backdrop of this Venus-Jupiter energy, seemed to be relaying this very same message to the sex offenders, punishing them for going beyond the accepted boundaries with the expression of their desires.

We also had Sun favorably sextile to Jupiter in Pisces Monday.  The Supreme Court additionally ruled that life sentences without parole, for juvenile offenders convicted of crimes other than murder, were unconstitutional. I saw this somewhat as a reprieve by Jupiter, who can also be very benevolent and sympathetic to the wounded children of Pisces.

Enjoy your Tuesday. Good luck finding that magical love!

With Goddess of Love Venus intimately aligned with indulgent Jupiter in the fantasy-prone sign of Pisces today, and the Moon in touchy-feely Cancer, I believe the Universe is suggesting that we relax and chill out a bit and cuddle up with our favorite Teddy Bear.

What immediately comes to mind with the insatiable energy of the day is Barry White’s Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love Baby.

Let the smoochin’ begin!

“The proximity of a desirable thing tempts one to overindulgence.  On that path lies danger.” Frank Herbert

With Venus ruling what we love, squared in a challenging way to Jupiter, the planet of abundance, the Universe is setting us up to learn a thing or two about moderation, and the wisdom of practicing it in our daily lives.

We also have a harmonious sextile to expansive Jupiter from the Sun.  While we may be provided with a few goodies and cosmic rewards for our past efforts today, again the key here is to not to be tempted to go overboard with our success and what the Universe is giving us.

This can be a more difficult lesson to learn now since the Moon is also in Cancer.  That Moon placement suggests that we are already very emotionally poised and looking for all manner of self-comfort and security. We may perceive having more of “what we love” as a good thing.  But, that is exactly how we hoodwink ourselves now and end up tipping the scales.  Jupiter in Pisces can also add an element of danger here, as it can be addictive and escapist in behavior when it is in this sign.

It was interesting that we did hear a bit of good news yesterday about the BP oil leak, that engineers may finally have a handle on containing more oil from leaking out.  Pisces rules both the sea and oil.  Today’s, Sun sextile to Jupiter in Pisces, which was already applying the last couple days in terms of orb of influence, can be a “lucky” aspect due to the expansive nature of Jupiter, and Jupiter is again in the sign of Pisces, perhaps more favorable for the sea.

However, when we look at the matter of Jupiter more closely, we see that Jupiter is also now part of a stressful configuration of cosmic energies forming what is known as a “mutable T-Cross” involving the signs of Gemini, Virgo, Pisces and the planets Uranus, Venus and Saturn.  So after hearing about the good news about the oil, we also heard that the damage to the Gulf of Mexico from the leak may now be much worse than initially feared.

Event in history on this date:

On May 17, 2004 we lost a giant in the entertainment industry.  Actor Tony Randall died at the age of 84.  He was best known for his role of Felix Unger in the ABC sitcom The Odd Couple (1970-1975) in which he portrayed a “neat freak.”

Tony Randall was an imaginative Pisces (b. 2/26/20) with a comedic Gemini Moon and tasteful Libra Rising. In addition to his signature role of Felix Unger, he also played roles as drunks and depressives.  Those latter roles, too, are what we are more apt to think of as falling under Pisces, a sign that is often associated with addiction and mental health issues.  Pisces natives are highly sensitive to their environments and thereby potentially more vulnerable to despair.

So, where did his ability to so eloquently play a “neat freak” come in?  Tony had his creative Pisces Sun exactly opposite fault-finding Saturn which was also placed in Virgo, the most critical sign of the zodiac and also the neatest, in terms of cleanliness.  Virgo will obsess over the tiniest things being out of place.  With his Pisces Sun, Tony was able to illuminate and channel all that “nitpicky energy” and give it a face we will never forget.

Interestingly, Tony also transitioned to his new life beyond the earth plane when the transiting Jupiter was exactly conjunct his natal Saturn in Virgo opposite his Sun. (Transiting Uranus was also on his Sun at the time.)  Perhaps the Universe needed someone to play Felix Unger again and could find no one better for that part, so he was drafted for the role.

We miss you Tony.  May your spirit rest in peace.

Enjoy your Monday! Limit the donuts!

Each of us literally chooses, by his way of attending to things, what sort of universe he shall appear to himself to inhabit. William James

The restless Gemini Moon tackles Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus the first half of the day. We need to keep in mind that not everyone shares our beliefs. Also, we need to remember, that by fulfilling our duties and obligations, is how we eventually advance to the next level.

Too, if our responsibilities suddenly shift along the way, we need to be willing to adapt and surrender to these changes, as this too, may be part of our personal plan.

The Moon enters emotional Cancer at 1:46 pm EDT and aligns with Mercury and Pluto.

With the Moon in Cancer matters of home and family move to the forefront. Our disposition becomes more caring and nurturing. We must be careful, however, not to smother the people we love with too much clinging or control.

“Don’t smother each other.  No one can grow in the shade.” Leo F. Buscaglia.

Have a happy Sunday. Go peacefully with the flow.

In the last analysis, what we are communicates far more eloquently than anything we say or do.” Stephen R. Covey

Tucking away that sage bit of wisdom to perhaps chew on later, the ever-changing Moon is ready to continue on to her next information-gathering stop in curious, communicative Gemini.

That is the mindset today. We want to find out and know a little bit about everything  with emphasis on “little.”  We’ll have more time to fully digest and philosophize about all the meaning of this new knowledge when the Moon moves through mutable Virgo and Sagittarius.

The lighthearted and fun-loving Gemini Moon also makes us Chatty Cathy in addition to reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously now. Our humor is also in greater supply, thankfully.

Overall, pretty cool feng shui energy for a fun Saturday.

Event in history on this date:

Beatle Paul McCartney reportedly met his future wife Linda Eastman on May 15, 1967. Most notable astrological influence here was the transiting, life-changing Pluto at 18 Virgo exactly trining his relationship Venus at 18 Taurus. The very same type of influence that Simon Cowell now has in his horoscope. Simon has transiting Pluto in Capricorn trining his Venus in Virgo. He is supposedly now engaged and poised to get married.

Pluto, which I regard as our planet of destiny, brings us those situations for which we were born.  (I also know Pluto has technically been de-throned from planetary status.)  When Pluto is aligned with Goddess of Love Venus, it can and often does bring us the person we were meant to love. Or, in other words, brings us our soul mate. I can personally attest to this fact, as I also met my husband with transiting Pluto exactly trine to my natal Venus.

Venus also represents things that we love, our possessions, and also things that we create.  Venus rules our artistic creativity.  As I mentioned the other day, Mick Jagger, who penned the lyrics to Satisfaction in May of 1965 (Keith Richards composed the music to it in his Neptunian sleep), also had the transiting Pluto exactly conjoined his Venus at the time. So for Mick, Pluto and Venus was synonymous with creating something of a masterpiece that fatefully changed his life (the song would become the Rolling Stones’ signature trademark). Mick would always have a special, symbolic “soul mate” relationship with Satisfaction in a way.

Linda Eastman also had transiting Pluto exactly sextile to her natal Scorpio Moon in her first house of new beginnings when she met Paul.  The feminine Moon governs our feelings and nurturing emotions and in karmic astrology symbolizes our past life experiences. The transiting Pluto to the Moon often delivers to us those experiences that transform or “wake us up” emotionally. I believe Linda and Paul were probably soul mates in a previous lifetime since both of them came together in this incarnation under Pluto’s powerful ray.

Looking at Linda’s and Paul’s horoscopes here, there is so much more I could write about now but, with the Moon in restless Gemini, I’m feeling the need to move on. I am sure you are, too. Perhaps we can revisit this matter of their two horoscopes later.

Enjoy your Saturday! Do Gemini proud and stay in motion. Don’t be a couch potato!

“First learn the meaning of what you say, and then speak.” Epictetus.

Can you imagine, if each of us abided by that simple philosophy, how much quieter our world would be, in terms of sheer stillness? Especially on a day when the Moon enters Gemini, the “communication sign?”

Anyway, some food for thought today as the Moon switches from determined Taurus to breezy, noisy Gemini (9:18 am EDT). With the Moon here, we are much more restless and curious and want to be on the go.

We are also, theoretically, more talented at multi-tasking now with the duality of The Twins. However, with both mental Mercury and the Sun still weighed down in focused Taurus, this may not quite be the case today.

Still, a good day for errand-running, attending to emails, correspondence, reading, short trips.

And good for speaking, with some qualifications as noted above.

Event in history on this date:

On May 14, 1973, (Frontiero v. Richardson) the U.S. Supreme Court approved equal rights to females in the military. Included here, the Court decided that benefits given by the U.S. Military could not be given out differently because of gender.

Check out the cool cosmic energy backdrop for the Court’s decision then:

1) Expansive Jupiter was traveling through Aquarius, the futuristic sign of the collective, that is concerned with equality for all. Usually, wherever Jupiter is we have increased opportunities for the affairs ruled by the sign it is passing through, so hence, more chance for equal rights.

2) Saturn, Keeper of the Status Quo, was in intellectual Gemini and exactly harmoniously trine to liberating Uranus in Libra, the sign of the courts.  Uranus in Libra helped to broaden out the former way of thinking (Saturn) here and put the issue of equality on the table.  (Uranus rules Aquarius.)

3) Transformational Pluto had just entered court-ruling Libra. On the day of the decision, transiting Venus in Gemini was also favorably trine to Pluto. Venus depicts females. So, we correspondingly had a sweeping ruling involving women by the Court. Pluto is also synonymous with historic firsts.

4) Finally, feminine Venus was also square masculine Mars in Pisces, so we had the “gender issue” and “battle of the sexes” symbolically playing out here. Mars also rules the military. Squares meanwhile force actions.

Too, Mars in compassionate Pisces is more of a “spiritual warrior” placement. It is more concerned with fighting for civil rights when it is in this sign, as idealistic Pisces represents disenfranchised groups, or persons who are suffering. Mars therefore was temporarily more aligned with the cause of the female underdog passing through Pisces than it might normally be.

Enjoy your Friday! Remember, “know” the meaning of what you say, before you speak it.

“The average man does not want to be free.  He simply wants to be safe.” H. L. Mencken

Whether that sentiment is true or not we are seeking a good measure of safety and security today with the New Moon in money-conscious and stabilizing Taurus. New moons mark new beginnings.

This new chapter today speaks to us of setting our intentions for practical strategies that fortify our security. For instance, now would be a great time to come up with a money-saving plan for the future. Or perhaps think of a way that we can somehow attract to us more of the things that we want in our lives.

The New Moon’s sextile to abundant Jupiter is waiting to reward us here.  We only have to be willing and able to put forth some degree of effort and initiative (trine to Saturn in Virgo) in the matter.

The New Moon also makes a restless square to assertive Mars in Leo. There is some tension here that needs to be resolved between seeking security and freedom of self-expression. Most of the time with Mars squares we feel the need to take some kind of swift action. Leo the Lion, too, is king of the jungle, so some of this action may involve temporarily seizing the spotlight as a show of power and dominance.

Events in history on this date:

Speaking of power and dominance, how about Leo Mick Jagger and Sagittarian Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones? Those two iconic figures certainly epitomize both of those things in contemporary culture and popular music.

“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” perhaps the biggest song in rock n’ roll history and Stones’ signature work, was reportedly written in May of 1965 and recorded on this date, May 13 (or right around, some confusion here). Keith Richards is said to have composed the song in his sleep and Mick penned the lyrics. The song speaks to the crass commercialization of society.

The cosmic energy at the time was so fitting for a song like Satisfaction to materialize.  Pioneering Mars was conjoined rebel Uranus and transforming Pluto in the critical sign of Virgo (Virgo deals with the digesting of experience). Many of us suddenly started to realize that we were not really happy with all the types of homogenized garbage that we had been fed on how we should live and what kinds of values we should espouse.

With Mars and Uranus aligned, we’re ready for revolt (Mars rules war). Uranus clamors to us to rise up against anything that traps us or keeps individuality submerged. We insist on personal freedom at all costs and we don’t want anyone dictating to us how we must feel or live (the lyrics of Satisfaction).

Interestingly, Keith Richards also has both Mars and Uranus configured together in his birth chart. He vibrates to this kind of individualistic mindset daily in his own life. The expansive transiting Jupiter in communication Gemini was also exactly conjuncting Richards’ Mars-Uranus conjunction, accentuating the influence, when he wrote Satisfaction. Uranus also rules genius and invention and, in music, highly original compositions.

That Mars-Uranus conjunction in his chart is also trine to his natal Neptune.  Neptune governs imagination and music. It also rules sleep and dreams.  Imagine being able to go to bed and wake up with a song in your head that is going to eventually make you zillions of dollars.  Not a bad life or karma! That is how Neptune usually works for us, too.  We get inspiration from it a lot of times in our dreams when we are more attuned to our subconscious and otherworldly dimensions.

Mick Jagger also had several favorable  Jupiter aspects like Keith had when he wrote the Satisfaction lyrics, including Jupiter sextile both his natal Jupiter and Pluto in Leo conjunction. Traditionally that is a “luckier” time when new doors  suddenly open up for us (and Leo again rules the entertainment realm).

Mick also had transiting Pluto (a powerful life-changer) exactly conjunct his natal Venus in Virgo. Venus rules artistic expression and aligned with Pluto it can denote giving creative birth to something so big (Pluto rules the masses), a masterpiece, that one’s life is literally changed forever as a result. Pluto-Venus can also be a period in which you can make a mega amount of money, as Pluto is associated with great wealth and Venus, as ruler of Taurus, governs money.
