“Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” President John F. Kennedy

The late President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961, when the Sun was passing through the compassionate sign of Pisces which rules our volunteer and charitable impulses.  The Sun was also making an exact trine, a harmonious aspect, to Neptune that day in the transforming sign of Scorpio.

Neptune is the natural ruler of Pisces and, as the higher octave of Venus, represents Divine Love versus Venus’s more personal expression of love.  Neptune also represents the spiritual urge within us.

When the Sun is trine Neptune, which happens twice a year, we are often more inspired to go outside ourselves and do good deeds for others, demonstrate some Divine Love, in other words, particularly for those persons who may not be as fortunate as we ourselves are, who may not have been afforded all the assorted opportunities that we have been granted.  Pisces represents the underdog, disenfranchised groups, persons who are maybe down on their luck or in places of confinement.

Also, the very day that Kennedy created the Peace Corps, lucky Jupiter, which rules travel abroad, was also conjunct ambitious Saturn, in the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn is the sign of the zodiac that rules government.

The Jupiter and Saturn conjunction is generally deemed to be one of the most propitious influences of all in astrology, particularly for undertaking new activities.  Jupiter is the planet that represents the growth principle.  While Saturn represents the safety urge and is traditionally regarded as the preserver of the status quo.

When we have Jupiter and Saturn together in a sign,  it usually means that we are able to positively incorporate balanced growth and change into our world, while simultaneously building upon our previous successes.  In this case, too, the conjunction was taking place in the Capricorn-ruled sign of government, so it was an ideal time to initiate a program that would extend the U.S. government’s reach or influence in a benevolent way outside its geographical borders.

Jupiter is also the embodiment of the goodwill ambassador. His essence is basically good-natured and generous. He is also tied to our philosophical urge and represents teaching, religion, and an overall growing awareness or consciousness of the world around us.  As ruler of inquisitive Sagittarius, Jupiter governs universities, places of higher education, as well as long-distance travel.

The Peace Corps is an American volunteer program that is operated by the U.S. government.  Each Peace Corps volunteer is a U.S. citizen who agrees to work overseas for a certain length of time. Since its inception, over 200,000 Peace Corps volunteers have served in 139 countries, in such areas as AIDS education and environmental preservation.
